The only good thing about his low intelligence is that he has no ulterior motives and only works based on some kind of primal instinct to behave well and just.
John Haywood was born on a small farmstead south of New Vegas, and even from birth his parents knew he wasn't a regular kid. As a baby, he was abnormally large and adept, filled with strength. As he grew older, it became apparent that his intelligence was lacking, but this didn't matter to them since he was a one-man workforce.
He grew up with no education, and so the only place he could really afford to work was the nearby Crimson Caravan Company. His father got him a job working there, which wasn't really that hard to do considering that John himself could've probably done it if he had the social aptitude, but this didn't matter due to his abnormal strength which would of course benefit the company.
He worked there for several years, and became friends with most of the workers there, although many of them weren't permanent and were just drifting from one job to another in the wasteland, but this didn't matter to him because new people always came in. After three years of working there, his father developed cancer and died three weeks after his tumours became severe. It turns out radiation had been leaking onto the farmstead video toxic waste dumps, and his mother blamed this not only for John's father's death but for John's appearance and low intelligence. John himself couldn't really understand what had happened, and his mother never really told him the full story either. She later passed away too, and this created a void in John's life...
A friend of John's father, Gerald Moore, became a central part in not only John's career at the Crimson Caravan Company but in his personal life, as he, in a way, became a father-like figure to John in his real father's absence. He always found Mr. Moore to be kind and helpful, and Mr. Moore was able to cope with John's childishness more than other workers and without him John would likely have been fired years ago, since he only really does what he is told to and only if it's in plain, dumbed-down instructions.
John continues to serve the Crimson Caravan Company, doing whatever Mr. Moore tells him to.
