Character Name: Jonathan Woodrow
Nickname(s): Moss Man, Woody, The Walking Tree
Race: Unknown FEV Mutant
Sex: Male
Age: 167
Birthplace: Navarro Military Base
Height: 10'4
Weight: 640lb
Eye Color: The white of the eye is red, the iris is orange
Hair Colour: N/A, however he is covered by mossy, luscious green plant life
Hair Style: Long and Unkempt, though it is made of the leafy strands from a Weeping Willow, and there is a small Lilly Flower growing on his forehead
Facial Hair: The large, thick brown roots on his face form a sort of Dead Man's Hand-esque moustache
Skin Color: Bark-Brown, though the moss makes it a mixture of this and vibrant green
Build: Woodrow's FEV mutation was rare, as well as his horrific gene-splicing. This has left him agile and unnaturally strong, though these abilities are both weakened when not in sunlight.
Distinguishing Features:
Unlike common mutants, Woodrow has Bark-like skin and is covered by mossy, green plant life. This, strangely, seems to make others think he isn't a ghoul or mutant and actually just an oddly shaped plant, decreasing the risk of human firing upon him or fleeing for fear of being killed. His mutation is not dissimilar to Harold's Mutation in this respect. Aside from being a walking mass of spliced-genes from plants and animals, there's not much that makes him stand out from a crowd aside from his vast scientific knowledge.
Profession: Survivor, Researcher, Philosopher
Skills:
Unarmed/Hand-to-hand, extensive
Survival, extensive
Science, extensive-masterful
Training:
Ever since he broke free from his Enclave captors at Navarro, Woodrow has been using his fists to deal with his enemies. He found that his newly acquired bark-like skin made his punches a hell of a lot more powerful against the fascist Enclave scum and any enemy he came across, and so began using his fists more readily. Throughout his life as an FEV Mutant, he managed to master unarmed techniques, eventually crafting himself some weapons to aid his punches like the Tattered Enclave Helmets he uses for Gauntlets.
Woodrow found early on he had a special bond with the plant life of the wasteland. They became a second family to him; a family he knew better than his own. At first he was an amateur with them; he barely knew their names but after decades of living off of them he knew exactly how to utilise each plant; how to prepare it and eat it, how to identify the most nutritious parts.
From birth till rebirth, Woodrow was put through a rigorous education program that increased his scientific knowledge and aptitude tenfold. Despite the bias eugenics area of his training, his scientific skill is not in question and he is a wizened doctor of genetic engineering and biochemistry.
Other Abilities:
Let's go sunnin'...
..it's so good for you! Woodrow's skin is full of chloroplasts, which are subsequently full of chlorophyll; a photosynthesizing pigment capable of gaining energy from the sun. From this, he receives cell regeneration which heals injuries and also receives "food" which is useful if his food supply is scarce. However, the energy is also used by his body to further grow; meaning he will one day be rooted to the ground and immobile, much like the Capital Wasteland's "Harold".
All bark and no bite
Woodrow's bark-like skin is incredibly reinforced, acting like a natural armour all over his body. Bullets and melee attacks are 20% percent less effective on him, but his movement speed and thus his attack speed are 20% slower.
The root of it all
If Woodrow is ever critically injured, he will go into a coma for a few days. In this time, roots will grow from his feet and legs and into the ground to absorb nutrients and energy required to heal him. However, if there is no soil or fertile land around (e.g. the lower levels of an Enclave military base), he may never wake up or have to heal via absorption of sunlight (but again, this may not work if he is out of sunlight)
Apparel: Woodrow dons sack-cloth garb that covers his entire body, equipped with a hood, leather gloves, leather boots and a leather belt from which he Enclave Helmets hang.
Weaponry: Woodrow has two Enclave Helmets which he kept from Navarro; an Enclave Tesla Helmet and a Regular Enclave Power Helmet. He wears one on each fist, and both are incredibly tattered and broken, having been beaten into shape through his punches. The Tesla Helmet contains a tiny charge within it still, meaning that it has a 50% chance of electrocuting the person Woodrow punches.
Other Equipment: 5.56mm Clips (4), Large Water Flask (1)
Affiliation: The Shoshone Tribe, The Rastafari Community, Any and All Mutants, Himself, The Enclave (formerly)
Religious Belief: Used to be a Christian before his transformation, now he's an anti-theist
Sexual Preference: Heterosexual (attracted to humans and mutants, though suffice to say they don't feel the same way)
Relationship Status: Single/Unavailable
Personality: Woodrow believes that making a better world is possible, and thus is kind, compassionate and understanding of people. He remains calm where possible, resorting to violence only when necessary. He speaks from the heart, but keeps any negative opinions to himself. The transformation and tribulations he has been put through in the wasteland have made him cynical, regardless of his compassion, and sometimes he doesn't want a better world for anyone, even if he thinks it's possible... he wants his pain to inflicted on others, but isn't willing to do it himself. The sadness in him is repressed, but can shine through the cracks in the mask occasionally.
2116 - Jonathan Woodrow is born to Jamie Woodrow and Mary Woodrow (both ex-Enclave Deserters) in the medical wing of the Enclave military base. Two days after his birth, both of his parents are executed and their son is to be given an Enclave education and eventually to be assimilated into the ranks of the Enclave's military. This was told to his parents before they were executed, just to make the moments before their death even more painful. Their death is recorded by security footage and logged into the databanks, to be used to show what happens if one deserts the Enclave.
2132 - Jonathan is excelling in Biochemistry and Genetic Engineering, much more so than any of his fellow Enclave students. The plans about him becoming an Enclave Soldier are modified, and he becomes the Lead Scientist's apprentice following his final exams. It is at this point that he becomes aware of what kind of experiments the Enclave really do; and that he will play a large part in them.
2137 - In October of this year, Jonathan pioneers several Gene-Splicing based experiments. The experiments in question are to see how the transformation occurs under certain circumstances or in different terrains. The "Sand Mutants" are a great success as their adaptations make living in their environment incredibly beneficial for them; with their camouflage for hunting and their specialised heat-loss system to keep cool.
2142 - Woodrow is a renowned scientist among the Enclave, receiving praise from many of his fellow scientists due to him being so young yet so talented. Hell, people were lining up to shake his hand and get his autograph, and a following of fans emerges in light of his work for the Enclave, and for the United States.
2143 - What is referred to as "The incident" in Navarro occurs. Woodrow, while reading through some old databases finds information on his parents. It was a bounty of sorts detailing them as anti-Encalve activists, causing trouble for the Enclave in the years before Woodrow's birth and up until that point. A brilliant mind such as his has no trouble in working out what happened, but the brilliant minds of the Enclave are able to track him down before he can confront anyone, just as he discovers the video footage of their death and sheds tears in response. The fame and fandom dissolute, and his name is never mentioned again.
2144 - The experiments begin. Woodrow's former mentor is brought back to take over his Genetic experiments, with Woodrow (ironically) as the subject. Only now could he see the evil and horror in his work. His genes were altered to that of a Weeping Willow Tree and several moss plants, combined with radiation treatment. He become much like a feral ghoul in the years that followed, with mossy-green skin and partially bark-like skin, with a variety of fusion between his remaining skin and the new bark skin.
2156 - One of the biggest of the Enclave's experiments now. Woodrow had grown in size and shape, looking slightly more like what the Enclave would later identify as a "Super Mutant" or perhaps a "Feral Ghoul Reaver" in build, but still much like a weak feral ghoul. He become increasingly violent and would attack the Enclave's soldiers whenever he could, carefully planning his next move...
2157 - Woodrow's mind begins to deteriorate, and his spirit begins to finally crumble under the Enclave's regime. His hope diminishes but he remains strong. In a fit on anger, he kills his old mentor after one of his courses of treatment which forces them to find a suitable replacement. This buys him the time to plan.
2159 - A new lead scientist is appointed to take over "Project Woodrow". In this time, Woodrow has grown to be over 7'0 in height and roughly 300lb in weight. His skin is now completely covered in moss and roots and is built like soft tree bark. UV rays are placed in his cell, allowing him to absorb the synthesised solar energy and become strong, reinstalling hope for him. The new lead scientist drew the conclusion it was having no effect on him, though in truth it was almost made him a walking nuke if you account for the high amount of energy in his cells.
2160 - Enough of the Enclave's abominations are in the same cell block as him to plan an escape. When the sedatives are released into his cell to make him too drowsy to fight back against the Enclave's soldiers, it has no effect due to the high amount of energy he retains from the UV exposure. The Enclave soldiers unknowingly seal their fate when they open the door. Woodrow grabs both of them by their helmets repeatedly smashing them against the wall in anger. He placed their tattered helmets around his fists, running down the hall in a frenzy, attacking officers, soldiers and scientists alike. With a satisfied sigh, he punches the release mechanism for the cells, releasing mutants into Cell Block 5. After heavy casualties, a lockdown is put into effect, trapping most of the mutants in the cell block who were still fighting the Enclave. Woodrow and a few others managed to get through the exit before the lockdown, tearing apart any Enclave members in their way. They escaped, most of them wounded but with enough adrenaline running through them to ignore the pain. They all run as far from Navarro as they can, with the occasional Enclave Assassin Squad finding them in the coming years, only to meet their doom like the guards at Navarro.
2169 - Necropolis becomes his home for the foreseeable future, along with his fellow test subjects. Set's ghouls were hostile towards them, and they retreated to the sewers beneath the ruins of Bakersfield for a long time, living off of the mutated rats and other ghouls down there as food. In some attempt to remain sane, he performs experiments of sorts with the mutated creatures using what makeshift equipment he could find (the experiment being to try and domesticate the animals and understand their territorial nature).
2200 - By now, Woodrow had broke apart from the Enclave's various subjects after traveling to New Reno after Necropolis' resources run dry... in the sewers anyway. He receives racist comments from people unsympathetic to his condition, but it doesn't bother him. What bothers him is the hail of bullets directed at him. Begrudgingly, he ventures to the town of Broken Hills, making the acquaintance of Marcus and settling down here. The inhabitants get along fine for the most part with him, though they become uneasy when he begins working on more experiments in the town itself, using ghouls and humans willing enough to participate. When the experiments become a bit too risque and actually ended up leaving a few ghouls dead, Marcus tells him it's time he left the town.
2220 - Woodrow leaves to wander, heading to the Mojave Wasteland in search of a purpose. He drifts from town to town, eventually stopping in the ruins of Fremont Street, making it his home for a few years among the scavengers and "locals" living in the tatters of the once great town whom which accept him even less than those in New Reno or Broken Hills, leading to him having to scrounge in the darkened alleyways to avoid the wrath of tribals.
2222 - Growing tired of never seeming to find meaning or purpose, Woodrow endlessly moves from town to town, learning about how people feel, what meaning they think they have. All he finds is rejection and depression. Despite his inner want to die and be free of it all, he continues his search for the following 15 years, regretting his transgressions at Broken Hills and his discovery of the fate of his parents all the while.
2237 - The Enclave, hearing endless rumour of a strange Moss-Man drifting from town to town finally catch up with Woodrow. On his way back to Broken Hills in an attempt to make amends, an Enclave Recon squad uses a device not dissimilar to the Mesmotron to stun and subdue him. His past has come back to haunt him it seems when he is taken back to Navarro. There, he meets the rest of his fellow former escapees, feeling oddly like he has finally found where he belongs. The Enclave, now in possession of FEV (Forced Evolutionary Virus) begin experimenting on "Project Woodrow" once more. Over the next 15 years, he is given FEV treatment which improves his already technically biologically immortal body. His skin becomes that of a hard bark, covered with thick moss and a few flowers. He grows in height and weight once more, standing well over 10'4 and weighing roughly 600lb... and his fellow test subjects grew with him. The Enclave's numbers were few, so a dramatic, action-filled escape wasn't necessary. When the time was right, Woodrow and his fellow subjects savaged and butchered their Enclave captors, escaping as they had done before but with little resistance. He and his escapees wander the land again, receiving harsher racism and often being shot upon by trading caravans and NCR patrols. They break apart after sometime, just as they had done before, leaving Woodrow alone; figuratively as well as physically.
2262 - Word of Navarro's destruction reaches Woodrow. He feels incomplete, and heads west back across into California, stopping at towns on the way. When he sees what's left of the base, he smiles.. smiles with tears in his eyes. He doesn't know why, but he feels broken. This was his home... He wanderers into the base, replacing his ruined Enclave Helmet Gauntlets with those of the dead Enclave Remnants, taking an Assault Rifle from one of the corpses too as a trophy of sorts. Furthermore, he remains in the area for a while, piecing together his past and hunting down remnants that drift along that way.
2273 - Feeling empty and useless, Woodrow decides to wander again, heading for the newly built settlement of Jacobstown. It takes him a few weeks, but once he arrives, he feels like this is where he always wanted to be, needed to be... Marcus, the mayor, isn't exactly happy to see him again, but lets Woodrow's past troubles caused in Broken Hills go, seeing as he was willing to help work on a cure for the nightkin there (though it wasn't exactly his specialty).
2282 - Tales of tribes to the north make Woodrow question his purpose once more. Deciding that he has done all he can for Jacobstown with the cure for the nightkin now available, he makes his way North-East to the Snow Canyon, meeting with the Rastafari Tribes and the Shoshone Tribes. Both of them greet him with no prejudice, no racism. He believes he can help them both, to expand and to learn, using his vast knowledge of the land's biology. He went to and from the Snow Canyon after that, often wandering the Mojave and occasionally California if need be.
