Kirk's father ran away when he was very little, so Kirk spent his childhood with just his mother in their small Bighorner ranch in the middle of town. He spent most of his childhood playing with the other kids, but as he got older, he was given more responsibilities and chores around the ranch. When Kirk was fifteen, his mother introduced him to an NCR Soldier that she had begun to date. The Soldier was called Mike, and he took Kirk on a lot of camping trips whenever he was on leave, teaching him how to fight, shoot and survive. These skills were refined when Kirk began going out gecko hunting with his childhood friend Sunny. On one such trip, a gecko managed to catch Kirk unawares. His arm was badly mauled, and although Doc.Mitchell said it would heal fine, the scars never went away.
When Kirk was seventeen, Mike died whilst out on patrol, and his mother fell into a unstoppable spiral of depression. She spent most of her time locked in her room, and eventually she became very ill. Kirk was forced to run the ranch by himself, whilst also doing odd jobs for other people for gain extra money. He slowly gained a wide variety of skills in anything from plumbing to fixing generators. He even learnt a small amount about wiring and electricity from helping to fix the lights, radio and jukebox in the saloon. He became the town Handyman, and was always doing jobs when he wasn't working at the ranch. He heard reports of the war between NRC and Legion, but that sort of thing was for big city folk, not someone like him.
The most exiting time in his life was when Trudy rounded him up to help defend the town from Powder Gangers; the famous 'Ghost Town Gunfight'. Kirk never saw the Courier in all the excitement of the battle, but he knew that the Leather Armour he now owned was thanks to the Courier. Kirk began listening to the radio whenever he got a chance, listening to each of the Couriers adventures with more amazement and jealousy. Suddenly, the simple life he had in Goodsprings wasn't enough any more. The constant physical work was hard and dull, and hunting geckos just wasn't as satisfying as it used to be.
Kirk stayed in Goodsprings for several more years, looking after his mother, working on the ranch and continuing to do odd jobs for people. Eventually, when Kirk was 22, his mother finally passed away. It was peaceful and in her sleep, but Kirk still felt devastated. He decided he wanted to leave Goodsprings. Maybe not for good, but long enough for him to have a real life. He dusted off his old armour, loaded his repeater and purchased an old tin helmet from Chet, hoping it would help protect him. He also heavily modified a shotgun that had used to be Mike's, making it smaller and far easier to carry. He set off that day in search of adventure, and never looked back.
