Agent 5’s upbringing had been one of the more cruel of the nine Agents. Artemis completely ignored him. He acted as if the child did not even exist, and apart from the one-on-one training sessions, Artemis did not even spare a glance to the child. Agent 5 was a very quiet child growing up, and the friendlier and more caring children like Agent 1 would go out of their way to play with Agent 5, to try and keep him happy. Agent 5 learned to just see Artemis as a teacher and a leader, rather than a father.
When Agent 5 was sent out on jobs with the rest of the Agents, he killed with subtlety and skill, and never questioned the morals of what he was doing. Agent 5 had never been particularly comfortable with guns, and took a preference to an old bow he found amongst Artemis’ weapon collection. Artemis had been very lucky to also have a quiver, and about twenty arrows. Agent 5 was very careful to keep the arrows he did have in excellent condition, and to always collect the ones he shot. Agent 5 also began using a small hatchet in conjunction with his knife, it was a good idea but he had no idea how to really fight with the axe, so Artemis taught him how to fight properly with an axe without mentioning anything. This was not helping his son, simply making sure his assassin’s skills were as refined as possible.
One job that changed Agent 5’s life was when his target had been a missionary from New Canaanite. Agent 5 was not told why he had to kill this man; he simply went to do it. When he snuck into the man’s hotel room, Agent 5 found him in bed praying. He looked up and smiled at Agent 5, and said that God had told him that his time was up, and that he had been praying. This woke something up in Agent 5, and he stayed with the New Canaanite till morning, discussing God, Jesus and Christianity as a whole. Regretfully, Agent 5 told the man he still had to die, which he accepted very politely. He gave Agent 5 a small, but very thick leather-bound book before he died. It was a copy of The Bible He read The Bible from front to back many times over the next few weeks. He told his brothers and sisters about his new found religion, and though many were very supportive of him, none of them really believed in it like he did. When he noticed the others were calling themselves other things, he named himself after a saint in the Bible, Macarius.
He left New Reno with the rest of the group, but when most went to the Strip, he split off to explore his new home. He ended up staying in Novac. His motel room was peaceful and relatively clean, and he was able to use his Bow to hunt animals to pay for it, which also greatly improved his tracking skills, something he was able to transfer to his other work. So far, he has succeeded in every job so far, and though his kills are sinful, they have never registered to him as such, for he believes he is righteous in all he does.
