I've been kind of had an idea for a thread based in a sort of dieselpunk setting.
Using the sort of tech from WW2, the roleplay would be start in a city on the eve before an invasion starts. The idea is that the world - either Earth or an Earth-like world has been at war, and the country we're has a city near the front-lines. Though the city has been hit by bombers, it has survived in relative safety, until now. People would believe that the city would never be attacked in force, as the frontlines have remained strong. But the government, through their propaganda have hidden the extent of how badly the war has going. On the whole a lot of people don't believe an invasion is possible, particularly the wealthy. Imagine the city as a sort of meld of Paris and London during WW2. There is a large wealth divide, the poor are really poor and the wealthy are really, really wealthy. As such, the wealthy are vastly more secure and safe, whilst the poor are dealing with the grubby reality of the war. There are a lot of bombshelters, but most people end up sheltering from the bombs in the subway/underground stations. Rationing, although it is mandatory across all civilians, the wealthy manage to get away with bribing their way to food, whilst a black market used by the poor (to their disadvantage) has risen up. We'll basically have characters who have normal jobs from various backgrounds, when the invasion starts.
