Edward was born into the Western Brotherhood of Steel Chapter. He was too small to be an effective knight, so he was trained as a Scribe. This turned out to be a very smart move, as "Little Eddy" turned out to be natural genius for anything technical.
He had learnt the maintenance and upkeep of basic energy weapons and recon armour took half the time of the other trainee Scribes. He had mastered the art of repairing and maintenance all energy weapons and even power armour by the age of twenty, and was the pride of the Western Chapter.
The only real issue, was his eccentricity and his love to tinker. Whenever he wasn't working, he would be tinkering with something, his room was always full of random electronic junk, and some knights weapons would disappear, only to return with strange modifications. The other scribes were unhappy with his work, but mostly allowed it. They finally stopped him when, one day he was messing about with a plasma grenade, when it went off.
Luckily, no one was around, and no-one else was hurt. Edward however, was badly wounded, he lost the bottom half of his ear and gained an ugly scar on his mouth. After recovering, Edward was immediately banned from doing anything other than routine maintenance. Edward was unfazed, however, and continued his experiments in secret.
When the Western chapter planned an expedition into Utah, Edward eagerly agreed. The brotherhood was eager to send him, as they had found out about his continued tinkering. His genius could not be argued, and he was given the role of Head Scribe for the expedition. His ingenious plans and improvised equipment allowed the re-opening of the Utah Bunker to completed in half the origional proposed time.
