Alec had no idea how many times he had reloaded and fired his rifle at the massive horrors filling his vision. But this time when he reached back for his next magazine, his hand found empty space. Alec spared a look down to ensure that he really was out of bullets. It was true. His ammunition had run out and as he looked up, he realized that so too had his luck.
A massive hammer slammed into his chest, bending the handle there into a mangled mess and pitting the steel of his armor with yet another dent. He reeled backwards in an effort to right his body. He placed his foot behind him and steadied himself. Just as the titanic mutant in front of him raised his hammer for another blow.
Alec dove under the blow and inside the Super Mutant’s guard. His knife described an eye wateringly fast arc into the freak’s neck, eliciting a wet scream from the monster. The mutant dropped its hammer as its hands shot to its throat. Alec staggard back and stooped low, and swept up the hammer in his grip. With a vicious swing he slammed the 20 pound sledgehammer into the Super Mutant’s left knee from the side. The sickening impact of the hammer head against the leg caused a horrendous snap. The bone was pulverized, that leg would never support weight again. The mutant’s body was ruined. But this did not mean the mutant was dangerous. Far from it.
As his massive frame crumpled to the floor, he swung out with a meaty fist, flailing wildly at the Knight Sergeant. Alec was spun fully around and only his suit’s stabilizers kept him upright. The soldier knew he needed to end this quickly, all around him the battle raged and his firepower was not a part of it.
He raised the hammer over his head, thinking for an instant the irony in this reversal of roles. With a mighty bellow he brought the hammer down on the Super Mutant’s skull. The top of the mutant’s head quivered as the heavy sledgehammer pulverized the skull plates and pulped the brain beneath. The impact had so broken the skull, that it not longer retained any shape. Shards of bone spun away from the corpse and the Mutant let out one final, shuddering ,breath as his broken body crashed to the floor. Contrary to popular belief, there was no spray of blood as the head was crushed. There is not a great amount of blood in the brain, as blood is toxic to brain tissue. Instead, there was a wet sucking sound as The Knight removed his weapon from the body. He grimaced and hefted the hammer into his hands, ready to use it in battle once more.
As more mutants poured in the building, he realized how ineffective the hammer would be. He dropped it and drew his pistol. It was a small caliber, but a bullet was much preferred to tangoing with these beasts. Alec fired off a trio of rounds, noting that he only had one spare magazine for his side arm, in addition to the one in the gun currently. This battle was expending his valuable resources.
A Super Mutant Master ducked through the door, rocket launcher in hand. Crazy bastard didn't even realize that in this confined space it would kill him too. Everyone focused on this new threat and brought him down with a hail of gunfire. Alec saw his course of action laid out for him.
He ducked and ran, hard to do in his unwieldily armor. The others must have understood what he was doing as more bullets began to hammer into the mutants around him. Alec scooped up the rocket launcher and three spare rockets the thing had been carrying. He scuttled back across the killing ground to where his allies hid behind fallen masonry and chunks of blown up concrete.
He readied the launcher and aimed at the onrushing group of mutants outside the massive hole in the wall of the station. His rocket fired, contrail of smoke wisping out behind the munition as it flew straight and true into the mutants. The detonation blew a bloody furrow in the attackers and for a moment the press of bodies into the room lessened. The rocket set off secondary explosions as grenades and other rockets the mutants carried detonated as well. A swath of death was rent through the forces in front of them and the opening they needed to escape presented itself. He broke open the launcher and inserted another rocket into the breech. With a violent upward motion applied to the launcher, the barrel snapped back up and another rocket was sent on its way for good measure.
“It isn't going to get any better than this. We need to move now!”
Alec made sure everyone heard him over the din of gunfire. It was time to leave this place, they weren't going to get another chance. The Knight quickly picked up his empty rifle and slotted it back into his armor. In case he found more ammunition, he’d want the rifle.
