FLATHEAD COUNTY
Because Montana was one of the fewer populated states in America, it was a lower priority target for Nuclear Bomb mapping. So, it managed to escape some of the severity of the damage bestowed onto the rest of the USA by the Great War. Some of it's buildings are still intact, a fair amount of the plantlife has managed to survive, and there's even clean water in several places!
Terrain, Weather, and geographical info:
Lots of mountains and open fields and lakes. There are a few rivers and lakes, prominent amongst them are Flathead Lake and Flathead River (which flows from the Rockies into Flathead Lake). There are also forests, a major one being the Flathead National Forest, which covers a lot of the east of the county. A large Force Field, deployed by the SteelPlate Society, covers the group of towns and cities.
Weather in Montana is how you would expect the weather to be in a northern state. The winters are cold and the summer and spring are mild. It rains a fair amount, but because of Montana's relatively low bomb count, its rain isn't as polluted as some other locations in the Wasteland. Though it is heavily advised that you don't eat any snow, whether it be yellow or not.
The Flathead National Forest is the largest wooded area of Flathead County. It has trees that have managed to live through the war, making lumber a possibility, but at a price. The place is a death trap, as it is full of Yao Guais, Blood Bugs, Wild Dogs, RadStags, and more. Plus, it's a big place, and easy to get lost.
Flora/Fauna:
Mirelurks – Because of the many lakes in Flathead County, these creatures are a major predator in the county. They exist in mostly Flathead Lake.
Yao Guai – Mutated bears that infest much of Flathead National Forest, though some are spotted outside it as well.
Feral wolves – Similar to the wild dogs in the Capital Wasteland, these are radiated wolves that hunt in packs. They mostly inhabit the National Forest, though occasionally they hunt beyond that.
Radstags – Much like the Commonwealth, the Radstag exists in the County. Occasionally hunted for meat, they are normally harmless and usually run away from anyone who approaches them. They're much more common within the Flathead National Forest, though some occasionally find their way into the County.
Radscorpions - The Wasteland staple at this point, the Radscorpions generally inhabit the mountains, particularly the Rockies.
Bloatflys - The ever-present Bloatflys, which buzz around attack anything that comes near it. They can be found just about anywhere.
Blood Bugs - Because of the healthy amount of rivers, streams, and lakes in The County, Blood Bugs are an annoyingly common sight. Though large numbers of them have been exterminated by the SteelPlate Society, they continue to be a pest to anyone who happens near water.
Feral Ghouls - Because of the low bomb count and the County's relatively stable ecosystem, Feral Ghouls are a very rare sight within the County. Most of the ones that do exist are likely remnants from the pollutants of the Wasteland Dump.
Deathclaws - Like Feral Ghouls, Deathclaws are also, blessedly, rare around Flathead County...but they can still be found outside the Force Field every now and then, though most of them get killed or driven off by patrolling Steelmen squads.
Factions and Settlements:
The SteelPlate Society – The most prominent faction in Flathead County, Montana is the SteelPlate Society, lead by Charmaine Quinn, the Queen. It is comprised of Super Mutants who lived atop Rocky Mountains at the Whitefish Mountain Resort, when Charmaine appeared to them. Ever since they have largely taken over a vast majority of the area. Their weaponry and tech was originally acquired by raiding an Enclave base in the process of migrating. Caught majorly off guard, and with many pulse grenades, the Enclave troops were defeated and their equipment taken.
The Super Mutants of the Society, dubbed "Steelmen", are intelligent and combat trained. They patrol and protect the County from all threats. Scouts are sent out of the County to scavenge more materials.
One of the most noteworthy features of the County is the Force Field, which a series of Enclave Photonic Resonator Barriers that surround the County and its settlements. These are powered by Fusion Cores which the SteelPlate Society manages to manufacture by harvesting highly radioactive material from within the Dump (see below).
Central Haven – The remains of downtown Kalispell, which was the County Seat in the old days, it is the main hub of Flathead County, and the number one place for visitors. It is the closest thing to a Pre-War city that a traveler can find this side of the Wasteland. It has shops, a hotel, a few restaurants (serving a wide variety of wasteland "treats"), and even a partially restored hospital. It is also houses "Safe Haven", the County's only radio station, hosted by a man known as "Mirelurk Mike". Drayton Biller, a previous inhabitant of Vault 21 who was inspired by what Robert House was attempting to build down south, is the founder. Though he is old now, he is a kind man and is generally loved by everyone in the County.
KALISPELL
Whitefish – A small settlement located north of Central Haven, it is the hometown of Neil Parker, who lives there with his parents. Life is simple in Whitefish and, aside from chores around the town, there's not too much to see aside from a shop or two. A lot of young people occasionally travel up the old, Pre-War ski lodge that lies behind the town.
Vault 35 - One of Vault-Tec's seventeen control Vaults. Unlike many of the other vaults, it has protected its dwellers reliably, and the inhabitants live a peaceful live without the radiation and fear that is normally associated with the Wasteland. Valerie Fawkes is the Overseer. The Vault itself was built into the "Whitefish Mountain Resort", a ski attraction from the pre-war era, erected atop Big Mountain (no, not THAT Big Mountain). Thanks to repairs done by the SteelPlate Society, a quick way to reach the Vault is by taking the ski-lift.
WHITEFISH MOUNTAIN RESORT
The main base of operations for the SteelPlate Society. The Resort consists of many cabin houses and lodges. The main lodge, the Kandahar Lodge, is the residence of Charmaine Quinn. It has been renovated and retrofitted to a degree with Enclave tech.
The Kandahar Lodge
Camp Crescent – A small settlement that was abandoned at some point (most assume its proximity to the Wasteland Dump had something to do with that), it is now serves as a small base for the NCR troops stationed at the County, and occasionally serves as something of an Embassy for NCR travelers. Thanks to the Wasteland Dump being contained, the camp does not suffer from radiation.
Coram – Despite being the smallest settlement in Flathead County, Coram is a very active place. Renowned for its "Cream of Mirelurk Soup" and many other recipes, as well as its "fish" market, Coram delivers much "fresh produce" to the rest of the county.
Creston - A pre-war town in Flathead; it was presumed empty and abandoned for many years, with nobody living in the ancient buildings. Even after the prosperity brought on by the SteelPlate Society, Creston went almost completely untouched, with some legends telling that the place was haunted. Because of this, the site remains quiet most times, the only visitors being Steelmen poking their heads in to make sure nothing suspicious is going on and scavengers.
The Flathead Landfill AKA "The Dump" – One of the most famous sites in the County (and ironically, one of the most beautiful, at least in some ways), the Flathead Landfill (typically referred to as "The Dump") is a Pre-War landfill that, in the past, has been the cause of many problems. It is incredibly, highly irradiated, with Rad Counts reaching horrific levels. Due to years of neglect, the Dump slowly began to leak, causing severe pollutants to be released into the County's otherwise stable ecosystem. One of the SteelPlate Society's first tasks (and one that helped them cement their place of power in the County) was to reseal the Dump, preventing it from ruining the land. This was possible thanks to the Steelmen, like all Super Mutants, being highly resistant to the radiation, making them the only beings in the County who can approach the Dump (aside from the Ghoul population, of course). Because of its obvious dangers, Charmaine has declared the area around the Dump to be a "No-Go Zone", banning everyone except Steelmen from approaching it. There are very strict laws regarding the Dump, and anyone who is suspecting of attempting to tamper with it are severely punished, if not outright shot. At night, the Dump emits a very bright (and, admittedly, very beautiful) light that can be seen for miles.
STAY AWAY FROM THE DUMP!
