Samuel Rayne was born to Knights in the Lost Hills Bunker, a standard pre-Enclave Brotherhood education was given to him, he wasn't really memorable in his younger years, he seemed like a fairly good kid, and was nice to about everyone he met, always having manners, and using the correct terminology for a respectful person. He was quite sheltered from the Enclave, he was aware of what they did, he was in his early teens when the war started, still too young to fight, and even at that age, he didn't know whether he wanted to be a Knight, or a Scribe.
Sam succumbed to peer pressure, and chose the Knights, thanks to his classmates. Again, he wasn't overly memorable, he preferred to stay quiet and learn. After quite a few years of training, enough to go through the Initiate ranks, and become an Apprentice Knight, he was placed on the field. His first mission was to mop up a group of raiders, situated at an old power plant. They did recon on the place for well over a week, and it seemed there was more then two dozen in there, compared to their 4 members, including a Paladin, two Knights, and himself. They had a good chance of survival, Sam mentioned the smokestacks that were sitting outside. They were tall, and one of the Knights specialized in demolitions. They would be able to collapse the smokestacks, and crush the building that the Raiders were in. They all pushed in at night, when the Raiders were asleep, and blew out one side of the smokestacks, making them fall on the building, killing a great deal of them in rubble. The few that were outside were mopped up quickly. It was quite clean, and the members of the group started calling Sam "Smokestack", thanks to his invaluable idea. Soon, this traveled all throughout Lost Hills, and most there called him by Smokestack.
His life was quite standard for a Brotherhood Knight, but many lower ranked Knights saw his as a leader, a man they could look up to. The Elders took notice of him once he got around to about Paladin rank, he was commonly chosen to lead teams and expeditions, he was popular with the troops, he was stern, but not unkind. A true people's man. Sometimes his choices would be questions by the higher ups, his methods unconventional, where others would crush, he would see to converse, always preferring a diplomatic approach to life, but not to say he was not a proper warrior, should they defy diplomacy, they would be defying their survival. This earned him some respect, not a great deal, but it was enough. Enough for the Elders to consider him for the Utah Expedition. After including Rayne into their fold, they planned long and hard for the Utah Expedition. The newly appointed Elder was told to single out 130 troops, he chose the ones that he could trust, not the greatest Knights, or the brightest Scribes, some say he was as crazy as the Head Scribe he appointed, but Rayne had himself a plan, a plan he did not tell anybody.
The initial reports from the scouts reported a single group inside of Samuel's area, the Shoshone tribe. They were kind to these scouts when they approached, if a bit wary. They came with some gifts, basic weapons, ballistics, not energy. They returned, and then, on 19th of March 2272, Elder Samuel Rayne of the Lost Hills Brotherhood of Steel Bunker left with his one hundred and thirty men and women, eager to see some progress finally on his now-life's work.
The journey was long, and hard, but they finally arrived in Snow Canyon, where Rayne had chosen to set up, due to the reports of a preservational bunker in the area, large enough to house all of their men, and more.
