Abandon was founded sometime in the late 2250s by Olaf’s predecessor Mayor Bennett, though the town had been inhabited long before that.
Originally it had been a small mountain town known as “Frenchglen”, though all record of that town has long since been wiped away. Sometime before the war, it was abandoned and left completely, when the inhabitants tried to get into a vault far away, and was later discovered by the “wasteland frontiersmen”, which was basically anyone who needed a roof back in those days. Frenchglen was settled for a time, but when the supplies ran out; the survivors either died off or went somewhere else. Over the years the town was picked clean, bar the mining equipment, locked away in the Ranger’s station. Those who got in found the heavy equipment and always planned to come back, unfortunately, they either forgot, or they died. Sometime later, raiders moved in, they used the mountain to spot their victims from miles around, and would track them for days or weeks. Sometimes they captured them, sometimes they didn’t. Most of the time, the dead were better off than the living.
Sometime around 2256, Bennett, a wasteland guy, was passing through Oregon from the north, and was tracked all the way to the town itself. When he was attacked, Bennett proved a decent match for the raiders, and held out on the mountainside for several days. As time wore on, the gunshots attracted the hungry critters of the mountainside, namely a pack of coyotes, which attacked the feuding parties. By the end of the minor battle, Bennett had survived, albeit wounded – too wounded to travel far. He left the coyotes to their raider meat and travelled to the nearby town of Frenchglen. Raiders being raiders, they never cared much for the archaeological value of the place and graffiti’d everywhere, coving up the name of the town. Bennett spent the next year or so, tending to his wounds in the town. He started removing the graffiti and battled coyotes on a regular basis. He lived off them, and drank the local water, and got sick. Over time the town became his home. And he began to abandon all hope of getting better and leaving… and so that’s what he named it. Town Abandon. A joke on his part, inwardly knowing it would be his end.
Over the years, people came to town. Bennett found himself a wife – although it was never put into writing. He had a daughter, who eventually became the town’s merchant. Eventually Bennett would become depressed, and fell into drinking, smoking and whatever the hell he fancied. Soon he became something of an aggressive brute, ruling over the inhabitants as “mayor”. He instated rule after rule, until one day, the inhabitants enlisted the help of a passer-by, who was fleeing his past.
Olaf was his name, a young bearded man, who’d come to the town in torn and dirtied clothing. He’d been treated well by the town of Abandon at least that was until his money dried up. When his money dried up, he angered the townsfolk and he was sent to jail… which was essentially a cupboard under the Ranger’s Station. There he spent day after day with no food at all. At some point, Bennett attacked a girl in the street for not obeying the laws. Bennett’s daughter, Suzanna, who’d been under her father’s wrath before, decided enough, was enough. She stole her father’s gun, and opened the door of Olaf’s cage. She handed the gun and told him what to do. She then ran and disappeared for several years.
Olaf, with little else to do but to take out the corrupted Bennett, went ahead and followed the girl’s orders. By the morning Bennett was dead. The townsfolk, though happy with their mayor dead, turned to Olaf as their new leader. Though hesitant at first, Olaf did as was needed of him, and became the new mayor. His first act of mayor was to remove the rules, and in fact go so far as to say that there would no longer be any more rules than a single. He told the townsfolk that they had the ultimate authority of what happened under their own roof, whereas he would be responsible for everywhere outside of their homes.
Some people however started taking it a little more seriously, and each home began having their own weird little rules, some of which baffled, amused and horrified the neighbours. One time a murderer started taking people into his home, and killing them, thinking he could get away with it, via the town laws, but Olaf, was having none of it. When he found out, he charged into the man’s home and blew him away. This incident, brought a tougher Olaf to the field, he’d no longer tolerate people who took others into their home without their expressed agreement, and so issued in just one more law. “Entrance into your home must always be willing and informed, or face the penalty.” And so Abandon became a town renowned for it’s policies, or lack thereof, attracting weird and wonderful people from miles around.
The Town itself
At the northern tip of the town sits the Ranger Station, which is the HQ of Abandon. It’s also the home of Mayor Olaf and has a radio tower nearby. Nearby his Suzanna’s store, with her home in the back. On the other side of the street is Stains’ bar and hotel. After a couple of houses, is Doctor Benjamin’s practice, although his house is nearby, it’s not part of the business. Ranger Miles’ camp is nestled on the nearby mountain (quite near the hotsprings), but he has a home within the town.
There are some hotsprings on the mountain, which are irradiated and can attract the type of critters that like radiation. Around the town, there are some limited militaristic defences, such as sandbags, and dirt walls, and a deep moat built around the town, though it is usually empty, it’s connected to a trench that leads up to one of the hot springs. Coyotes are a common sight around the town, as well as Big Horners on occasion.
