Personality: Olaf is a pretty stern guy. He can seem quite heartless, and that’s sometimes the case. He has nothing against killing, even if it’s not even necessary. He is ruthless in battle, and very tactful. He is bold, but not entirely brash, although he has been known to act brash when personally hurt.
Personally, he’s a guilty man. He believes he got a lot of good men killed, simply to stick it to a man who didn’t like him. Even if that is the case, he knows he’s a deserter, and feels somewhat bad for it, almost as if he’s a coward. That being said, he is proud of what he has done for Abandon, and being it’s mayor. He likes the freedom it has given to him, but also the freedom it’s given other people. He’s grown to like the people there, and sees them as an extended family.
Olaf was born in Shady Sands and like most men there, he ended up in the NCR military. As he went through bootcamp, he showed a particular keen skill with guns, given his steady hand and focus. He trained himself well, and proved he was a capable fighter, even without his weapons. Olaf was a good soldier through and through, and of course, was thrust into the Ranger spotlight. As a ranger recruit, he followed his superiors onto the frontlines, and that was when Olaf’s life began to take a turn for the worst.
At some point in Olaf’s life time, general Lee Oliver got into power, and began organising the troops and put them where he saw fit. He saw fit to place the Rangers in harm’s way, time and time again, simply because he preferred troopers who fell in line with him. At least that’s how Olaf and the other rangers saw it. As time went on, Olaf would end up in more and more life threatening situations. Raiders, Legionaries, robots, you name it, Olaf and the other rangers probably lived through it. Thankfully, Olaf never met a deathclaw, so he was thankful for that. Though Olaf did eventually make it to be a ranger, he slowly, ever increasingly got disenfranchised with the NCR military.
Sometime in 2277, the year that started the war with Caesar’s legion, Olaf was out on patrol with his fellow rangers. An ambush had been laid for them by Legionaries, and a gruelling battle emerged. The raiders were horribly outnumbered, but held their own, taking legionary after legionary out until finally, exhausted they fell into the clutches of the Legion. They were kept for a short time in a makeshift camp, whilst war erupted around them. Olaf and the other rangers, sat through torture. Days went by, and no one came to help and so, the group decided to break out. It was a relatively short fight, the rangers got the upper hand, quite literally, and given the fact they had no weapons. After managing to subdue the Legion soldiers and losing a couple of their guys, they armed themselves, took what they could from the camp and headed back to their own lines.
When they got there, they were given a less than warm greeting. In the eyes of the NCR they’d failed on their mission to patrol, which allowed the NCR to be attacked (in a camp that meant nothing in the grand scheme of things), but also lead to the deaths of several rangers, whose bodies had to be left in the field. They’d been tortured by the Legion, just to come back to scorn and sarcastic comments. Though they were given some time to recover. Olaf had been thankful for it, even if it did tempt him to leave the NCR once and for all.
Ultimately, he didn’t however, at least not yet. Olaf was sent back to the field, this time on a scouting mission. They used the uniforms they had stolen from the dead legionaries, and infiltrated a Legion camp, where they set upon information gathering. However, one by one they were discovered. Olaf however, remained hidden, long enough for him to find some plans and then escape, but not before he saw the other rangers taken once again for the Legion treatment. He decided enough was enough, and he’d punish Oliver by sending his troops into a trap. He was angry, stupid, and bitter and all manner of things he later wished he hadn’t have been. He carefully edited the information he received, and handed it to his superiors, who then handed it to someone else, and through the chain it went. Olaf, sat down to think about what he had done, and when it was found out, he knew he’d be court martialled. Panicked, he dropped his ranger armour, placed on some civilian clothes and ran.
He ran so far, not knowing what became of his corrupted info, until he could no longer go anywhere. Eventually ending up in a town called Abandon.
It was as far away from NCR territory (at the time) that his feet could carry him. He had little money, and little food, but the place was nice… Or so he thought. He ended up in a bar with the owner called Stains, who gave him a bed for the night, in return for a bit of work. Olaf had been there a few days, and slowly his money faded away. He wasn’t entirely sure how, but it was probably the drink. He spent a lot of his nights there drunk in Stains’ bar. As the money dried up, he brought the ire of the mayor. Mayor Bennett, who was known for his ridiculous rules, imposed a street tax, in which someone would have to pay for using the street, and when Olaf couldn’t pay, he ended up in the cell. Whilst there, he was starved, but that’s all that happened. He had half expected torture, simply because of past experiences, but not this time. He was just given a lack of food. Days later, a woman was attacked by the mayor, for reasons Olaf didn’t know, he guessed it was the street tax… or something worse.
When Suzanna, the mayor’s daughter arrived, he had, at first, been pretty surprised. He hadn’t expected her to give him a gun and set him free either, but when she did, he wasn’t about to look a gift horse in the mouth. She told him to kill her father, so he and the rest of the town could be free, and then she vanished, just like that. He later found out she’d ran away from the village, fleeing her past, just like he had, or still was.
He took the gun to the mayor and followed the girl’s request. He was quick, and focused like he had been in the old days. He gunned the mayor down without blinking, and just sat there, in the mayor’s office, just waiting for the sun to rise. When the people stepped out into the streets the following morning, they cheered for the mayor’s death. His body was dragged onto the mountain and left to the coyotes, and the reign of Mayor Bennett was done. In thanks, the people allowed Olaf to stay, and began to try and convince him to stay on as their mayor.
When he finally accepted, he took on the guise, and began writing the laws. Ever since, Olaf has been mayor, up until recently, they’ve held comfort in their settlement, cut off from the outside world, away from the wars in the south.
Unfortunately that wasn’t to last. The return of Suzanna, who had ventured as far south as the Mojave, brought word of the NCR victory over the second battle of Hoover Dam; she also brought word of the NCR moving northwards towards Oregon, and Olaf knew what was coming. Though he hadn’t been from one of the independent towns that the NCR forcibly took over, he had heard many stories, after fleeing the NCR. Olaf has ever since, begun to plan a way to keep Abandon’s independence. He repaired the ranger’s radio tower, and has been searching for the NCR’s radio frequencies daily. He’s even gone so far as to instating Suzanna as the local merchant, setting up trade routes with neighbouring towns. Perhaps they could find allies elsewhere to help… though he knows bringing the ire of the NCR down upon you is never a good idea; it would at least buy them time to abandon Abandon.
