Name: The British Government
Type of Faction: Government
Faction Leader: High Minister Miriam Ahab
Active Characters: Miriam Ahab
Other Notable Figures:
Goals: To unify the United Kingdom, and expand their power across the entire known wasteland.
Beliefs: They believe in regenerating what they have. They care not of the majority of the wasteland, at least not until the various “organs” (the cities) are fully repaired. Some do not question the High Minister… However some do, some question a lot. All is not stable in the Government.
Allegiances: They have a trade agreement with the Euro Traders
Enemies: The Royalists, The Highlanders, the Raiders, the State of Oxford and any and all unincorporated settlement.
Headquarters: Houses Of Parliament, London, England
Locations: England:
Central England is the base of operations for the British government, although they hold nothing west of Berkshire. It holds four of their largest cities, London, Birmingham, Nottingham and Manchester. Though they hold the surrounding country side in a loose grip, it is loose for a reason. They care not for who and what lives in the country side, focusing on the cities. This is more significant in the London area, as the British government only holds the inner city areas and the main roads out into the country. The Greater London area is full of Rebels, which often create conflict with the surrounding British army.
Nottingham serves as a large trading up, given its links to all the major territories of the British Government. It has the largest military garrison next to London, and is in a good position to supply either Birmingham or Manchester if they are ever in need.
Birmingham sits on a border between British Government territory and Royalist territory, and is Cardiff’s supply line. It is constantly under fire from Royalists, and an invasion is always just days away.
Manchester serves as a vital artery to and from the south, as it provides the only safe route up into Scotland. Soldiers from Manchester have almost always seen service against the highland army in Scotland. Manchester’s biggest threat is Liverpool. Liverpool is infested with rabid ghouls, who tend to make it out to Manchester, and attack its inhabitants. In recent times, the British army have constructed a large trench around the western half of Manchester to negate attacks by the ghoul. In any other situation Liverpool would have been invaded and obliterated, but the irradiation levels in Liverpool are that high that it is almost impossible for any human to inhabit for even a short amount of time.
Scotland:
In Scotland, the British Army is only in existence in two cities, Glasgow and Edinburgh. These two cities stand as a stronghold against the Highland Armies, which sit to the north. There is constant fighting in this region and serves little more than a hall to keep the hordes out from invading south.
Wales:
Much like the country side of England, the British Government’s hold over Wales is loose at best; their concentration is entirely kept on Cardiff.
Cardiff sits on the frontlines of the war against the Royalists, much like Birmingham, constant fighting occurs in and around Cardiff. The Royalists have taken up to invading by water, using small craft built from wreckage. These surprise attacks often make the situation in Cardiff quite desperate as its trade routes are often blocked by Royalists and their supporters.
Armaments:
The High Minister’s guard: Mini-guns and laser rifles are very common, high end sniper rifles and other such weapons are a bit more uncommon, but still scene in their possession. Some will even have riot shields and stun spears.
The British Army: Usually armed with battle rifles of various kinds. Snipers are reserved only for marksmen and women; however each city has their own sniper unit, so they are a common sight.
The Police: Usually restricted to riot shields and batons, they will sometimes come armed with pistols, shotguns and machine guns.
Armor and Uniform:
The High Minister’s Guard: Heavy armour is common in the high minister’s guard. The armour will often have specialised software and hardware within it, such as target tracking visors, radiation protection and other similarly functioning equipment already built in.
The British Army: Usually they wear dirt brown battle armour. Snipers will wear camouflage. Most soldiers will have some insignia to the regiment they’re from, each with their own colours and flags.
The Police: the police generally wear a traditional black outfit, with a thin layer of armour under their shirts; they will sometimes wear helmets or caps, depending on the situation. Enforcement units, have appeared from time to time, where they will use heavier battle armours, similar to those used in the army, however black in colour and with gasmasks.
Vehicles:
The High Minister’s guard: Limited number of aircraft, a few tanks (in defence of the HQ building)
The British Army: A few armed APCs, nothing significant however.
The Police: Virtually no vehicles, they have a few armoured trucks, but nothing significant. They have a couple of working patrol boats that patrol the Thames within the city.
Technology: Though most of the technology “officially” owned by the government hasn’t been reclaimed yet. They have a few things, already captured. They have full use of a radio system, as well as ownership of the BBC. They have the capacity to make guns, and weapons, and have limited power in their cities. They’ve also got a skilled workforce, which is constantly working on regenerating the cities they own.
Other: They have a hold on the main roads out of London, and their trade routes follow roads that reach to their cities all the way in the north. Most routes are constantly patrolled. Every city park has been made fertile by various means and is now used to grow crops, an inner city farm. Though several tunnels of the London underground have been stabilised and cleared, no trains currently run, so the tunnels are more or less used for people in a hurry on foot.
Numbers: 1,000,000
As the bunkers opened into the wastes of the formerly Great Britain during 2271, the British government put their plan to rebuild in motion.
It started out with London. The High Minister’s bunker opened several others, excluding the bunker in which the royal family resided. The High Minister, who had been brought into power by the death of her father, decided it was best to secure London before everything else. So that’s what she did. The Westminster area was the first to be secured, and with the opening of the bunkers across London, many other areas were soon locked down. During this time, The High Minister grew to detest Ghoul and soon started her genocide against them.
Bunkers began opening across the country, as fighting in London slowed down. The High Minister’s territory spread over Nottingham, Manchester and Birmingham. Trade routes were set up, but after a string of attacks from rebels, the trade routes were cut off for several months.
By 2272, central London, Birmingham, Manchester and Nottingham were secure. Parks in the inner cities were converted to farmland, and once they were set up, the royal bunker was opened. Once the bunker had opened the monarch took his place at the Grand Minister’s side, but as the two had grown up in separate shelters, they were very different people. This caused a rift between the two, eventually leading the Grand Minister to turn on the royal family. This started the war between Royalists and the British Government. Supporters of the royal family battled against the Grand Minister’s forces, and successfully freed the monarch from her clutches, and then retreated back to Winsor. They secured the town and then quickly after that, they secured the rest of Berkshire. The war now had a front line, one that hasn’t moved since.
With the expansion of the Royalist territory, came news that Glasgow and Edinburgh had joined the High Minister’s domain, and that was soon followed by Cardiff. Many towns and cities across England soon appeared in favour of the High Minister. Over the next few years the British Government forces exploded in number. She would start work in reconstruction, and eventually began work on the major landmarks, but left Buckingham Palace well alone.
Around this time, the repairs of Broadcasting House in London were completed, having been worked on in secret. Radio transmissions from the British Broadcasting Corporation began emitting from the radio towers. Instantly propaganda filled the air around London. Soon the BBC spread across the whole of the British Government’s territory, only counterbalanced by the radio transmissions from Bristol.
Months later a new threat would start to battle against the British Government. This time was far in the north. It was a faction that had no single leader, but a collection of Royal Houses collected under one banner, called the Highland Armies. The monstrous hordes of the highland armies caused masses of damage to both Glasgow and Edinburgh. Eventually, with reinforcements from Manchester and Nottingham, the Highland Armies were pushed back into the mountains of Scotland.
