Janus is a man of action. He doesn’t like to wait around and he likes to travel. He can be cold and callous. Being a shoot-first ask questions later kind of guy, he is perfect for the average soldier work, and takes great pleasure in it. Janus is a survivalist and at the end of the day, would do anything to survive. He doesn’t think about the bigger picture, and leaves that to the guys in charge. He doesn’t question his orders that often, unless they seem really stupid.
Janus isn’t a man to shy away from his past, having lived an eventful life; he likes to talk about it if asked. He isn’t ashamed of what he’s done in the past, but he acknowledges that he is a different person now. Some things still linger from his past, finding death easier to handle than seeing a friend or a loved one go insane (or feral).
Janus, being a pre-war Ghoul has had an interesting life over the years. Currently he is an soldier with the Royalist army, fighting on behalf of the Ghouls in the town of Redhill. He is rumoured to have had more than a hundred jobs in his life time, most of which was spent staring down the barrel of a gun.
The Canadian Ghoul was originally born in Windsor in 2047. Times were tough as the resource war began in his childhood. The resource war hit home hard, his father, being a mechanic; fell out of work as the cars stopped moving. Things got gradually worse China invaded Alaska and then America started to annex Janus’s homelands. Being seventeen at the time, Janus joined the protesters, who were trying to fight the big American companies, which were buying out Canadian businesses across the country.
Four years later, Janus began to realise that protesting wasn’t working and decided to join the Canadian Liberation Army, a terrorist group based in Windsor. At the start of their careers, they got quite a few high valued targets, but none more high-valued than a Robco regional headquarters in Detroit.
As America annexed Canada, the Canadian Liberation Army was shattered, its leading members assassinated, and its members fled into hiding. As the British Government secured transport for loyal Canadian citizens, Janus signed up and was immigrated to the United Kingdom.
Within a year Janus was employed at the Tower of London, standing guard over political prisoners. Whilst there he would slowly get detached from reality and become quite cold. The political prisoners became something not even human and although it was tough at first, he was able to kill countless numbers of them, one after the other. Not once did he question the Government’s stand following them like the lost sheep he is.
As the bombs fell in 2077, Janus’ preservation shelter door failed on them and everyone inside was turned into a Ghoul. Weeks later they would be woken with no knowledge of what they had become. All they knew was that they were alive (at least in some way) and the city was burning. There were people screaming in the city, the constant gunfire and explosions echoed in the wreckage of London made it clear that they needed something defendable. After much thought they realised the Tower would be easily defended and took it upon them to secure it.
Almost a year later, Janus and the other Ghouls began retreating out of London as the Raiders turned the guns from each other on the Ghouls. The Tower then became a raider stronghold, which would later become the site of the first of the British Government’s major battles.
Having followed the Ghouls to their next base of operations, Janus helped in the construction of their newest base in Redhill. Utilising the buildings and the wreckage of vehicles, the Ghouls built themselves a fort to hold the raiders off. With many miles between them and the Raiders, the Ghouls grew in number. Over time many Ghouls trickled out of London and ended up at the fort. The population in Redhill boomed in the next few years and Redhill thrived.
Unfortunately, it got too big and too quickly and with it came three big problems. With the population boom, supplies got scarce easily. With strained resources, their second problem was born. Two splinter factions rose up. “The Sane” were led by members of the original party of Ghouls. They believed that the feral Ghouls were a strain on resources (and therefore should be executed to save them). The opposing Ghouls, “the United” were made up of scavengers, doctors and various other Ghouls. Having seen many of their friends become feral, they had a more sympathetic viewpoint and decided they wanted to keep the feral Ghouls and look for a cure.
Janus himself was undecided as he saw the merits of both objectively. He had had a few friends go feral in his time, and he didn’t want to just execute them. As time went on The Sane became more violent until they were on the brink of a civil war. It was then the third problem reared its ugly head. Raiding parties had found Redhill and had begun to attack the scavenging parties, which took a further strain on resources.
The raiding parties became a curse, which never really went away. Hostilities within Redhill grew ever more violent until The United decided enough was enough. The Sane were forced out of Redhill and into the awaiting arms of the Raiders. Some tried fleeing back to Redhill, but were shot on sight, whilst others went to war with the Raiders.
As The Sane went off into the English Wasteland there weren’t heard of again in Redhill, until many years later when tales of a Ghoul haven based in Liverpool found their way down south.
Janus, knowing how hostile the wastes were, decided to stay, though deep down he did regret not leaving with The Sane when he had the chance. Life was hard in Redhill from then on, more of the Ghouls became feral and Janus lost a lot of friends. Raiders continued their attacks but never quite managed a major offensive against Redhill.
In recent years, Janus saw the appearance of the British Government (and then later the Royalists and the Highland Armies). The government soon started to secure London, Janus using his history with the British Government, acted as a go-between for Redhill, and organised labourers and engineers to work in London.
Things were fine for the Ghouls at first, some treated them with fear, others, who had been out in the wastes for a while, became accustomed to the Ghouls and traders began appearing at Redhill from all over. For the first time in a century and a half, Redhill’s resources were always stocked, and they never had to worry about running out. The Government’s security also nicely protected them indirectly as the raiders had a new enemy, one that was either enslaving them or wiping them out. The raider attacks on Redhill were whittled down a lot and soon they were able to scavenge in relative peace.
Unfortunately it wasn’t to last as the British Government started to turn their guns on the Ghouls, feral or not and soon Redhill faced an invasion. The purge of Ghouls in London hit Redhill, and Janus hard, as he had put his faith in the British Government and now they were betraying his trust. He had idolised them before the war, and didn't know what to feel. He likened the event to the annexation of Canada by the Americans and soon he began to see the British Government as his enemies.
At roughly the same time, the British Government became embroiled in a civil war of its own as the Royalists broke off from the Government and took up their territory in the south-west of England. Much to the surprise of Janus, the Ghouls were accepted into the Royalists ranks, and were treated as friendly until they became feral. After trade agreements and an alliance was forged between Redhill and the Royalists Janus believed it was time to take action against the British Government.
After seeing the Royalists treatment of Ghouls, Janus decided his skills would be better put to use with them. Leaving Redhill behind, Janus made his way towards Royalist territory and enlisted with its army.
