James' story is not unique among his fellow Guards. His parents were Guards, as were their parents, as were their parents, yadda yadda.
He was born on Shelter Island, among the squat military bases and the ever present fog that seemed to choke the island, a Shelter, but also a prison. He grew up in one of the many multi-family facilities that were present on the island for the growing population, Barracks in all but name, and learned how to strip down his rifle before he learned how to do his ABC's. He went through rudimentary education in a fourty-child classroom, giving a basic military oriented education for the children which included basic mathematics, language, and a history of the Guards, as well as special 'moral classes', to instill pride and good virtues in the children. Life was hardly easy at these facilities, and James found himself, like many of his students, subjected to a beating for ill behavior.
Although for James, the beatings were usually more frequent due to his unfortunate tendency to cause mischief, a trait which baffled his teachers as both his parents had been very 'by the book' students. He was a joker and a trickster, prone to playing stunts on his fellow students and even the occasional teacher.
As he got older, he was offered the usual choice of service through the military, or civil service as a repairmen/mechanic on the base. He chose the former, like nearly all of his classmates.
James did better during basic training than he had in school. After passing the basic training, he was assigned to the Guards' Third Company, 'Lincolns Newborns', or just 'The Newborns', the infamous Conscript company where all new Guards proved their worth, one way or another. He swiftly proved himself able in patrols on the North Fork, and after proving his worth was granted Corporal stripes on his seventeenth birthday.
His patrols were generally uneventful, mostly consisting of breaking up conflicts between farmers, or supporting the Regulars on an operation. Occasionally, they had to deal with the rowdy farmer trying to stir up passions against the Guards, by the traditional firing squad method.
As a Corporal, he's built a reputation among his subordinates for his good natured fun, and occasional cheating. He sells his plentiful supply of cigarettes to his fellow soldiers in exchange for 'favors', hardly ever having to dig his own foxhole as a result. The Sergeant turns a blind eye to such behavior in exchange for his own free cigarettes when he needs them.
Now, he's Eighteen. Should he survive much longer, or prove himself through some action in combat, he'll be made a 'Regular', the coveted position of all Conscripts.
And who knows from there? A resourceful man like Corporal McCormick could go far in the Guards, if he lives long enough. Perhaps McCormick can become so much more in the Guards someday...
