Personality: Norm is a rather melodramatic teen, always having it so the world revolves around him. Despite the high level of poverty and sickness in the wasteland, he found it to be more of a social injustice when he was taken out of class for whispering to a friend. Even with this lack of common sense or adequate perception of the scale of events in his life, he was is vastly intelligent and a great tactician, as well as being politically aware. Norman is also a coward, and a vehement one at that; if he can run from a fight, he'll do it. One of his worst traits is his ease in becoming infatuated very quickly out of lust and not real love, which has lead many people to berate him, to his dismay.
Morally, he's rather neutral. In spite of the amoral fascists he grew up with, Norm hasn't really made up his mind, he just avoids doing anything particularly bad if it isn't worth it. Self-interest and primal abhorrence to cruelness and sadism keep him relatively level... though don't put it past him not to spike your drink if he finds you attractive, or steal your intriguingly rare energy weapon.
Norman was born in Raven Rock, both his parents being members of the Enclave's military division. Complications during his birth were many, and even the high-quality tech of the fascist pre-war shadow government wasn't enough to prevent the death of his mother via infection. His father on the other hand was killed in active duty shortly after, though it was practically a suicide since he purposely lead himself into trouble and got killed. Norm was left orphaned before even he first birthday, but the Enclave took care of their own.
While his upbringing, aside from a lack of parents, was fairly typical, he was always jealous of people who had parents or any kind of paternal/maternal figure. It wasn't long before he befriended one of the scientists working there at the time, due to the scientist finding Norman's cynicism as a child almost inspiring. This also lead Norman to want to study more in this field, and in the Enclave's education he studied scientifically driven subjects like Chemistry or Computer Science, being rather proficient in both of these subjects (“a natural”, his teacher said).
His twelf birthday was rather significant in his life, as it was the time he got his first boyfriend. They were both the same age, and both were embarrassed about their preferences and so kept their relationship secret. Although at this point in his life it wasn't very sexual, he felt a strong emotional connection to this boy and would spend prolonged amounts of time with him.
However, a few months later came the Enclave-Brotherhood War. It ravaged the Enclave's militant forces and he was forced to evacuate the facility during the Lone Wanderer's massacre of the place. Norman's lover never made it out, and only the scientist and one soldier got out with him. These two were important people, as they kept him alive throughout his adolescence, and the scientist continued to devote his time to teaching him as much more as he could during their time traversing the Capital Wasteland, inbetween dodging roving super mutant parties, bands of raiders, mutated creatures and radiation-induced deaths. Life was certainly a lot harder without the safety of Raven Rock, and it was difficult to maintain equipment due to the fact they couldn't enter any towns due to the vilification of the Enclave's image.
Norman was subject to the changing mentalities of his two companions when times became hard. They turned to robbing wastelanders from scraps of food and measly amounts of water, sometimes killing others for it. Norman wasn't a fan of violence, but he agreed that if anyone was going to live out of him, his two travelers and the wasteland junkies dotted across the Capital, it should be him and his friends.
While clearing out a small power station's maintenance shed, his power-armour-clad friend and companion, Quentin Steele, came under fire from a Brotherhood of Steel patrol while Norman and his mentor were inside the shed cleaning it out. The old scientist quickly removed his Enclave HAZMAT suit and hid it in one of the metal lockers, simply standing there in his pants with Norman, to Norman's strange arousal... nevertheless, the Brotherhood burst through the door moments later, and both Norman and his mentor claimed to have been prisoners of a small group of Enclave remmants, telling them that the others were off scouting out the area. Their story was believed, and they were both sent on their way. Norman felt like he had betrayed a friend by lying like that, but he'd prefer to tell a lie than take a laser beam to the eye, especially from some Brotherhood of Steel grunt. Norm didn't particularly love the Enclave's ideology, but he detested the Brotherhood of Steel's; the collect technology for the sake of preservation, even though this amounts to petty scavenging and doesn't benefit the majority of people who could benefit from it due to fear of it being misused. At least the Enclave weren't afraid to use their tools.
Norman and his mentor eventually moved on, living in various wasteland cities to avoid arousing suspicion. For six years, all he'd ever done was run, hide, fight and most importantly learn (though maybe he hadn't been learning the right lessons...). Now, he was an adult... and the world certainly knew how to tell him that he had to grow up. While out traveling in the northern area of the Capital Wasteland, very recently, attempting to reach one of the satallite towers after hearing rumours of a small group of Enclave remnants living there, his mentor was shot directly in the head from a group in the distance. Norman, petrified, froze in place and simply stood there with his hands quivering in the air. Slavers... the “Pitt Vipers”, he would later learn was their name. They took him prisoner immediately, and most of the group enjoyed pushing him around or hitting him. It was later apparent to them that he was “smart” as well, and they forced him to help “purify” or “strengthen” certain drugs and hack terminals for them. Norman has been living on little sleep and with at least one daily beating for around almost three months now... will he manage to grasp freedom once more?
