Garrett was born in New Canaan in 2252 and has lived there most of his life. His parents, especially his father, raised him to be pious, moral, and resilient. He began reading at age five, mostly so he could be able to read the bible. At age eight, his father began teaching him how to work and fire a .45 Auto Pistol, and by age twelve he knew the schematics, parts, and physics behind the gun by heart. He wasn't a bad shot either, although he was no Joshua Graham. The skills didn't translate to two handed firearms, however, and Garrett showed no interest in learning despite his father's insistence. He put in the time with his father to learn how to use them but it was more to make him feel better than to actually use them in any life threatening scenario. When he was sixteen he started training his accuracy with two pistols at a time, and within a few months he had a firm grasp on the gun, which in his eyes, and in the eyes of most other New Canaanites, made up for his trouble with rifles just fine.
At age 19, Garrett began volunteering for mission trips to the local tribes. Assigned to the sorrows, language barriers made it near impossible for him to spread the word of God, but as he lived among them he began to pick up the language. If anything, he was more of a diplomat than a missionary: a friendly face to represent the New Canaanites.
During his later missions, around the age of 22, he was paired with Lilith Greene, a doctor in training who tried to teach the Sorrows modern forms of healing. Eventually they fell in love and got married; Garrett's parents providing the wedding rings. Due to 'complications', Garrett was never able to get Lilith pregnant, a topic that no one ever wanted to bring up in front of him but nevertheless ate away at the back of his mind.
In 2281, while Garrett was on a mission trip, New Canaan was wiped out by the White Legs. He only learned of the attack a week after it had happened, running into two survivors of the attack. They said that roughly thirty had survived, and they were going to rendezvous with the others at the Colorado river. Garrett said goodbye to the Sorrows one last time, and left with his two friends to meet with the others, holding out hope that his parents and wife had somehow survived. Unfortunately, they weren't so lucky.
Garrett left the group behind and headed towards the Mojave, worrying that staying in Utah would fill him with too much anger and bitterness. He couldn't afford to be bitter, he knew it would destroy him. A new start is what he needed, away from the White Legs and out of the reach of the Legion. Garrett decided to move towards New Vegas, thinking there might be work in a gun shop or something to that effect, and maybe he could save a few souls along the way. He entered Freeside, but lacked the caps to get into New Vegas proper. What he could enter was the New Mormon Fort, where the Followers of the Apocalypse were situated. The Followers' dedication to the betterment of the people of Freeside reminded him of his wife's devotion, and he eventually asked them to train him medically. The Followers happily obliged, and Garrett spent the next six months training under their tutelage and treating the people of Freeside.
Garrett now travels the Mojave, offering his medical skills to those who need it, partly because he wants to fix the world in a way besides headshotting raiders, and partly because it makes him feel closer to his late wife.
