Born on Earth, specifically the former state of New York. His father and Grandfather both fought and died in the Human-Covenant War, and he bears a resentment towards aliens. He was raised by his mother upon his fathers death, and the rest of the family. He took care of his two little brothers, Jack and Thommy. His family is of an Irish background, with German mixed in.
He was close to his two brothers, and guarded them from all threats, be they bullies or scraped knees. The death of their father effected him harder than the others, and at his Fathers funeral he swore to enlist in the same unit his father had been in, to make him proud. It was at that moment, when the man in grey handed him a flag, that he went down the same path his father and grandfather before him had gone down.
When he was Eighteen he enlisted and volunteered as soon as he was able to for Orbital Drop Shock Trooper training. Scoring well during basic training examinations, he was accepted.
During training, the Drill Instructors broke him and then rebuilt him in a form they found acceptable for a Shock Trooper. His final test, at the end of all the specialist training, was a jump. He had to be able to get into one of the pods, and actually be launched from it into a training area, in full gear, to pass. If he refused to jump, he'd flunk. When they brought him to his pod, he slid into it without any questions, and a nervous grin on his face. They all made nervous jokes over the comms...and their instructors voice came over the comms. "Alright boys and girls! Today, you become ODST's. While the Marines get to fly in, nice and comfy sitting down, how do you go down?"
The group of trainees chorused "Feet first!" and then they were gone. Rathorn himself would later recall the feeling of his first jump. The nervousness, the excitement...the straight out fear. He'd remember his head being jerked up from the force of it hurtling down to ground, everything in front of him moving too quickly...and the flames of his fellows pods as they burnt through orbit. Then, the crash. His pod slammed into the dirt, and he went to pop open the hatch....only to find he was staring at dirt. His pod had landed awkwardly, and he could not get out...the greatest fear of a Shock Trooper next to burning up in orbit.
Luckily, a pod had landed nearby and the other trainee informed the others about what had happened, and a rescue team was sent in to help the Trooper out of his pod. Despite this, Rathorn did not 'drop out' after the Jump, choosing to keep firm in his decision to join the ODST's.
Rahorns first combat mission was against an insurgent group on a rebelling colony. His fire team jumped into the city, and engaged in brutal street-to-street, room-to-room combat. His first kill occurred when he kicked in the door to a room in an apartment complex with a partner. His partner tossed in a flash bang, and they went in, screaming for the insurgents to place down their weapons. The majority complied, but one insurgent, a girl his own age, went for her weapon and took a shot at his partner. The round missed his partner luckily, and Rathorn fired his rifle at the insurgent without hesitation. The rest of the insurgents lacked the courage the girl did, still dazed and confused from the flash bang, and did not resist.
Dylan at first could not stop thinking about the girl, feeling mildly guilty. As the body count mounted in the city however, he began to distance himself from the people he was killing. They became a faceless enemy, not someone who in another life could have been a friend, or brother, or sweet-heart. This made it easier to cope with, and after multiple successful repeats of busting down doors and shooting Insurgents, he was dubbed 'Lucky'. The name stuck, and when he was sleeping one night, his buddies painted a Shamrock, dark emerald green, on the armor. Stenciled inside of the Shamrock in white was one word:
"Luck"
Within a week of fighting, the city was brought back under UEG control with heavy casualties on both sides. Dylan survived, and was re-deployed a few times with a few more jumps before ending up on his assignment on the Winter.
He was assigned to the UNSC Harsh Winter, Bravo Team. Price had taken an interest in the young man after he completed the mission when his old squad was wiped out, rescuing a captured Officer and successfully getting him out alive, despite overwhelming Insurrectionist numbers in the area. Most of his squadmates were picked off n their pods upon landing due to a tactical blunder on commands part, but Dylan and two others managed to get out of their pods, but only Dylan made it to the rendezvous point.
After waiting the designated time for his squad mates, and no one showing up, Dylan continued with the mission, recruiting UNSC loyalists in the area to help distract the Insurrectionists. During the chaos that ensued as loyalist militia fought the "Innies", Dylan grabbed the target and got him out alive.
However, after the events of the Winter Incident (Harsh Winter Thread Series), Rathorn was transferred out of Prices command and from the ruins of the Harsh Winter. Much to his surprise, someone else had taken an interest in him. The Lance Corporal found himself promoted to Sergeant, a rank that he was deemed worthy of after careful reviews of his past. Particularly, the same incidents which had landed him a spot in Bravo Team now gave him leave to run his own Squad. The Squad was designated Kraken Squad. The Winter Incident was covered up, and Dylan had been given a rather...strong, warning, to not tell anyone about the events that had occurred.
