Personality: Abigail was once a spirited woman with a zest for life and near-boundless energy, a woman who was beloved amongst her unit for her excited playfulness, maternal care for those under her command, and ferociousness in the face of opposition, including superiors whom she thought were out of line. However, that woman is long, long gone. Today those who know only her public face tend to find just another slave, quiet and obedient, apparently broken by the years of abuse she's suffered. That said, she isn't completely broken, and when shadows fall and the slaves are alone hints of her old self, someone who still tries to tend to the other female slaves and do her best to help ease the pain. But she has become colder and harsher, she will unflinchingly betray someone in if they endanger the greater whole of the slaves, though these acts haunt her with guilt. Unsurprisingly she hates the Legion and wants nothing more than to see the whole place burn--to the point that if she believed she could acquire the materials she would destroy it. However, she is weary, what little hope she has left is hanging by a thread and as more and more slaves, particularly women, die from their abuse, she comes to believe more and more that she will not escape... but she refuses to accept this, not out of logic but simply because she refuses to give up what little fight she has left.
To say that the ruins of Los Angeles are a poor place to grow up is a bit of an understatement; while the city might have been largely tamed compared to how it might have been long ago, it was still far from being a place where children would want to live. Abigail Marin was the product of a "covert meeting" between a young NCR Army private and a man whose identity she was never outright told, but was most likely the woman's lieutenant. Abi and her mother never had much in the way caps growing up, her mother winding up a bartender at a bar for the NCR and often leaving her daughter unattended in order to get enough for them to eat. That said, she still taught her daughter well, and what time she was able to scrounge together was spent teaching her to survive in this cruel world and giving her a proper moral compass; perhaps one of the few people who were unwilling to commit what would be considered crimes in this desperate world. The day that Abigail could fire a shotgun without knocking herself to the floor she would begin delving into the city, mostly just picking up any bit of old-world gear that might fetch a price. She was forced to kill people on a few occasions and she was shot at one point by a bandit (thankfully just in the arm), and while the actions haunted her for a while, they also hardened her and prepared her for the fact that the world was a horrible place. As she joined her mother at work and began actually paying attention to what bar patrons had to say she came to realize that, while the Angel's Boneyard was hardly an easy place, it was hardly the worst, and that there were plenty of people out there who were suffering far more.
The day that she turned sixteen she decided to follow in her mother's footsteps and joined the NCR Army, hoping to do her part to try and bring some peace and order to the wasteland. As she discovered, life in the army wasn't nearly as gallant as she had hoped, but they did enough good that she felt at peace with that regard. Above all though, she found life in the army exhilarating, not just because of the danger and fights, but because, very honestly speaking, she absolutely loved being around her squadmates. Very early on she found herself becoming a friend to almost all members of her squad and keen to get everyone to share stories, even those which were sad or embarrassing just for the purpose of bonding. While not the best leader or wisest person initially, she found herself generally trusted as something of the local therapist wherever she went. Indeed, life was good for her, and it would only begin to get better not long after she turned 18 and was transferred to Dayglow where she met... well the love of her life.
To be perfectly honest, when she first met Ben she almost didn't want to get attached to him. Abigail had had other relationships, and while they were never unpleasant, they inevitably ended almost the moment that either herself or the other person were transferred out. But Ben was such a wonderfully friendly person, and so charming that she found herself rapidly falling madly for him in spite of herself. When he was transferred out she actually cried herself to sleep that night believing they wouldn't meet again... only for his first letter to arrive not long after and promptly make her cry again with joy. For four years the two would keep a close correspondence, embracing each other any time they were stationed together and writing back and forth constantly when not. And then, in June of 2272, Ben asked her the question, one which she would respond to with an emphatic 'yes' before he had even taken a breath in.
Thankfully, the NCR was willing to accommodate their relationship and allowed them to be stationed together as often as possible, and they would enjoy quite a few more years of happy marriage, only apart rarely and happily making plans for the future. However, this world has a tendency to make fools of all plans. In 2277, the day before the battle which would rock Nevada for years to come, her newest recruit came into her office asking her a few questions, seemingly worried about something. He seemed worried about what he should do if his family and his loyalties were at odds. Rather unfortunately, she told him that he should care most for those that matter most for him. Unfortunately, it would turn out that this man had been blackmailed by the Legion to betray his squad and, when the battle began, immediately knocked Abigail out, tied and gagged her, attempted to sabotage some of the NCR's equipment (and only marginally succeded), then hid with her in a ditch while the battle raged on. As the tide began to turn in the NCR's favor, he decided to do what he could to ensure his and his family's prosperity, and decided on trading Abigail for his family. Of course, he knew that she was married and that her husband would hunt for her (and possibly himself) if no body was found, so he placed her ring and dogtags on a badly burned corpse.
When Abigail awoke, she was stripped nude before a group of Legion soldiers and the man who betrayed her apparently bartering with the Legionairres. The man wound up stripped of his possessions, but his gift was accepted and his family returned... and soon the former sergeant found herself on the wrong side of the river, a prized slave to one of the legion commanders. She was a tough slave to beat down, and on multiple occasions she found her life threatened rather often for her failure to cooperate; however, rather than kill her, the man whom had brokered her acquisition saw such a strong woman as a perfect candidate to breed soldiers. In time, through a combination of physical domination, lashings, careful food management (not-quite-starvation), and execution of others in her place... it was an experience which Abigail wouldn't wish on anyone... save maybe those who performed it. Eventually, when a young girl was executed because she refused to lay with an efficient soldier (mostly out of loyalty to her beloved husband), she finally capitulated.
To those who know nothing of the individual slaves, she is a somewhat inconsistent, but generally reliable slave whom can generally be relied upon to produce results... at least as much as a woman can be expected to. She has had three children so far, all of whom have been boys as strong as her broker anticipated. However, despite being superficially cooperative, she also has become something of a quiet voice amongst the female and non-combat slaves. She has not advocated for revolution, for others' examples have shown just how desperate an action that is, but rather she has advocated patience and strength, to do everything they can to survive the abuses of their captors until a chance comes to escape. When a slave threatens to worsen the situation for their comrades, she is quick to advise the individual, and has somewhat ironically taken up a position as the underground den mother, unbeknownst to the Legion... or perhaps known but they allow it as she has in some regards made their jobs easier. She does not halt escape attempts, but rather in smaller matters she tries to keep the people healthy and safe, and not rock the boat. It has been the most miserable of existences, and often she contemplates heading to the river to drown herself, much as she invariably has done with the second of any twins born under her eyes, but she has kept herself going on the sole tiny speck of hope that she might be freed. When she saw the Second Battle across the water and witnessed the Legion troops retreating, she had been going down to the water, believing that the Legion would be victorious and all hope would be lost... instead her ears were pleasantly assaulted by the roar of a great silver machine rumbling overhead chased by explosions on the ground, and would watch as Legion bodies fell and they were cast from the dam's walls. This spectacle rekindled her hopes, and since then she has been holding on as tight as she could, convincing herself that, if the slaves held on just a little longer, then the NCR would finally force out these beasts, and they would be able to return to their families... and perhaps... if she was truly lucky, she would see her beloved again.
(Edit: 24 April 2015, changed capturer's current status from alive to dead)
