Roderic Chevalier was born to a lower noble family in the province of High Rock. They were partly descended from the Horse-People of the Bjoulsae River, and the Chevaliers were known as skilled equestrians. Many members of the house had served in cavalry units for their King in western High Rock. The Chevaliers had a manor in the country side, and Roderic's father, Theodyn, was a horse breeder. Roderic loved the horses from a young age, and soon became a skilled rider, and knew much of breeding. He would spend many hours riding through the countryside. Like most sons of noble birth, Roderic learned the knightly arts of combat. After using a selection of weapons, ranging from halberds to maces, Roderic decided that he liked using a single handed sword the best. Roderic continued to work on the farm, whilst serving as a knight for the King whom the Chevaliers served.
The Chevaliers knew a high ranking Imperial officer, whom whilst recruiting men in High Rock for the Legion, offered Roderic a commission as an officer. At his family's urging, Roderic accepted his Legion commission. Roderic was to serve the Legion in fighting against the Stormcloaks in Skyrim's Civil War. Roderic packed his things, and rode out of his Kingdom. He went northwest, eventually ending up at Solitude. Roderic was given a uniform, but chose to continue to wield his own sword in lieu of an Imperial blade. He was given limited training on the tactics and combat style of the Legion, as well as basic protocols and procedures. Roderic, having experience leading men, was assigned to lead some soldiers in the Pale campaign. Recognized for his valor in the Battle of Fort Dunstad, Roderic was promoted to Praefect. Roderic was then sent to the Rift, where he served heavily in that campaign. When the Legion was taking Winterhold, Roderic remained in the Reach, fighting Stormcloaks in skirmishes along the border with Eastmarch. Roderic developed a respect for the Nords, even the Stormcloaks. He also saw it as shameful that the Empire would allow the Thalmor to ban the worship of Talos. However, he believed that if Skyrim stayed united with the Empire, it would help greatly in the fight with the Dominion that Roderic believed was inevitable. Roderic wished he could of been at the Siege of Windhelm, but was assigned command of a regiment of soldiers stationed at Fort Greenwall. He reported to Legate Fasendil, a High Elf. At first, Roderic was suspicious of the Altmer, but soon learned of Fasendil's hate for the Thalmor. After the war, Roderic left the Legion. He now remains in Skyrim for the time being, seeing what opportunities can be had.
Roderic spent some time traveling to the different holds of Skyrim after he left the Legion. Many Nords, especially in Windhelm, seemed quite bitter after their loss in the war. Roderic was happy to not be wearing his Imperial armor when he came across such people. Eventually, Roderic decided it was time to return to High Rock. Being a horseman, he made sure to get himself a Whiterun shield before leaving the province of Skyrim. Riding along the same road he took a few years earlier, Roderic road across the border into his homeland as a war hero. His family and friends were proud of Roderic's service to the Empire, whom they were fond of due to High Rock's relatively peaceful, stable, and prosperous condition. Roderic went back to working on the farm, and serving as a Knight. Many years after Roderic's service in the Legion, he received a letter. It was from a friend. Alfred was a Nord from Whiterun, who fought along side with Roderic under the Imperial banner. After many years of dutiful service to the Jarl, Alfred had been made a Thane. With his new found power and prestige, Alfred intended to start a horse breeding operation in Whiterun. He asked for Roderic's help. Roderic, wanting to help his friend, and see Skyrim once more, decided to go. He packed up his things, saddled up his horse, and rode east. He once again rode along the road to Skyrim.
