Personality: Rica Cardell is a strong and forthright kind of man. He is vastly confident, perhaps over confident in some cases. He is proud and holds his intelligence before everything else. He has absolute faith in the military, after growing up without force users being in charge, he doesn’t think very highly at all. His indoctrination dictates they are a threat however. He can be aggressive, and bold, which comes across in his strategies. He is somewhat ambitious, though he knows he’s very lucky to have gotten the rank of ship’s captain so soon in life. He has the utmost loyalty to the empire, and believes that it is only a matter of time before the republic implodes in on itself. As a leader he invokes loyalty in his men, and while on duty he is quite stern with them. Though having served with them for a long time, they have a good relationship off duty, even if some of them think he’s a bit too self-obsessed.
History
Rica Cardell was born on Carida during one year before the battle of Yavin to a proud Imperial minor noble family. Whilst he was the oldest, Rica grew up knowing that he would never inherit his family’s estate. As his father was an imperial captain himself, his duty had often took him far away from home, and as such, his mother became lonely. So lonely in fact, that when Rica was born, his bright blond hair proved his mother’s infidelity. It was a stark contrast to the dark hair of both family members, and as such, Rica became something of a social embarrassment. Whilst his father argued that the boy’s hair should just be dyed to stop any questions, his mother refused and as such, Rica kept his hair colour. His father made sure that the next child was his, just in case.
Growing up, Rica was something of a social pariah, labelled a bastard. Oddly, this never seemed to bother him, as it was something he accepted very early on, though he never did find out who his father was. Rica became more and more determined to prove himself better than his peers and made a plan to join the Imperial academy as soon as possible. When he was old enough, he requested that his father use his connections to give him an opportunity to become an officer, blackmailing him with the knowledge of his lineage saying he would do his absolute best to embarrass the family if he didn’t get his own way. Angered his father agreed and used his connections and got Rica into the officer’s academy, which allowed Rica to proceed in the career he wanted.
It turned out to be for the best, as Rica turned into a fine Imperial officer over the years. He was decent with a blaster, and had a good rapport with those placed under him. He was arrogant though in his early years, bringing the ire amongst those above him, giving him the nickname amongst the staff as “Cardall’s bastard”. Nonetheless he became an officer and by the end of his education had earned his role aboard a Star Destroyer under Captain Stannon Typhe.
The two hit it off immediately, both of them were like minded individuals and Typhe was happy with his new officer, stationing him on the bridge with some of the new recruits.
Unfortunately for Rica, during his first year aboard the destroyer, they were sent after a high priority target by one of the Moffs and told to capture some of the New Republic’s spies operating within Imperial space. Typhe however ordered the ship destroyed, killing everyone aboard. Little did Typhe know, he was supposed to capture the spies in order to help an imperial agent gain trust. The act of blowing the ship up resulted in not only the deaths of the republic spies, but also the death of an Imperial Agent. As a result of the embarrassing incident, Typhe was promoted to Commander and was sent to oversee the construction of an interdictor fleet above Lianna. Rica could feel his career stalling for serving under Typhe and allowing him to screw up an operation for Imperial intelligence.
As time passed, Typhe got more and more disenfranchised with the Empire, angrily pacing on the bridge every day. Rica continued to serve, though he too was getting frustrated. He was almost pleased when he heard that the Moffs had splintered. Rica thought that maybe they’d get reassigned to do something, but before that could happen, Typhe did something insane. He decided to take the fleet for himself. Many of Typhe’s officers, including Rica were promoted above their station and placed on many of the unfinished vessels and were ordered to oversee their construction to make sure they were finished as fast as possible.
Rica was given the captaincy of the Dragon’s Tooth, and whilst it was able to hold an atmosphere, it was far from finished inside. If Rica had been honest, he was barely liveable. Nonetheless he knew this would come back to bite them in the behind eventually, it was just a matter of whether he would remain loyal to his commander. Until an opportunity presented itself, however, He would remain loyal and focus on completing the ship.
After several setbacks across just as many months, the ship was finally finished and by 20 ABY, the Dragon’s Tooth, along with many of the other ships was finished. It was around this time that Moff Varks took over the Moff Council, and Typhe made his separation from the Empire official. Rica sighed knowing this would get them killed, though he knew Varks would be too busy to deal with them for a while at least.
It took Varks two years to send a small fleet of vessels to the Lianna and it was now that Rica decided to deal with Typhe once and for all. As the other ships moved to intercept the fleet, Rica ordered his ship to move in front of Typhe’s ship to pretend to be a barrier, protecting the flagship from the hail of gunfire from the Imperial vessels. He then ordered his men to the hangars and to load up the landing craft. Much to the surprise of his men, he then ordered them to assault Typhe’s ship and execute him as quickly as possible. Rica remained on the Dragon’s Tooth, as his men followed their orders launching an assault on the Star Destroyer.
As his men assaulted the ship, Rica announced his plans to the attacking Imperials, who subsequently turned their guns on the remaining vessels. Soon enough Typhe was dead and Rica’s men had the ship. By the end of the battle the other vessels were either destroyed or badly damaged. The Dragon’s Tooth too hadn’t gotten away without a scratch. It too would need repairs.
Varks or at least the men under him were pleased with the result, manning the star Destroyer and sending it back to Imperial Remnant space. Rica was then ordered to join the Imperial fleet, and he did so, formally being sworn back in with the Empire. As a reward, Rica was allowed to keep the Dragon’s Tooth, and retained his rank, despite his youth, having proven himself at the skirmished above Lainna. He was then attached to the Fleet guarding the border in Urce space, where he’s been ever since.
