She's so use to being told what to do she has barely any free will of her own.
All in all, while she hates her freedom being taken from her as much as the next person, she realises that there's nothing she can do about it, and makes the most out of what she has.
History
Like many out there in the galaxy, Natali started from humble beginnings. She grew up on Sarkhai with her mother and father, and had a fairly average childhood. She learnt manners, etiquette, language, writing and a wide variety of other household skills, a model child if you will.
Then one fateful day, when she was eleven years old, she and her family took a transporter to a nearby system. They had left to celebrate with her aunt, who had recently bought a house there. However, the transporter was attacked by pirates. Natali’s father, as well as anyone else who tried resisting, was killed, while everyone else was rounded up and taken aboard the pirate vessel. Those moments huddled together in the dark, scared and uncertain, were some of the most terrifying in her life.
When they eventually emerged from the bowels of the ship, they were no longer anywhere near their home. A small base on an asteroid belt was all they could see, with a dull blue star burning somewhere in the distance. The captives were taken to a large holding area, where they remained for several days. They received very little to eat or drink, forced to sleep haphazardly on the floor with a few blankets between them. Often the pirates would take women away for a few hours, and one could easily speculate why. Eventually, another ship docked at the small asteroid base, a ship belonging to slave traders. The slavers then split the captives into two groups, one which they would take and another that would be left for another ship. Natali was put in a different group from her mother, and they both frantically struggled to reach each other when they got separated, but an arm holding Natali by the shoulder stopped her from progressing. Her mother was dragged back by the pirates, beaten for her disobedience. When Natali once more tried to reach her mother, a sharp hand smashed into her face, and she collapsed into the ground. That was the last time she ever saw her mother.
When she awoke, she awoke on the cold steel of the slave ship, with water being splashed into her face. Coughing and opening her eyes, she was immediately greeted by the big man who had knocked her out. The man’s name was Derek, and he had decided that in the time it took them to travel through hyperspace, he would ‘discipline her’ so that she would ‘treat people with the respect they deserved.’
Needless to say, the couple of days were hell on earth. She was forced to work constantly, any rest she took without his permission resulting in a savage beating. She was fed little more than pieces of stale bread and water, and was provided with a small torn blanket to rest. By the time they finally reached their destination and were trudging down the landing ramp, she collapsed once more, this time due to exhaustion.
For nearly two years Natali was ‘trained’ by Derek, as well as many other slaves and slavers. She was taught to work, taught to entertain, taught to do whatever it is her master wanted her to do. Many of the slavers were unconvinced. Some said she was too young, others that she was too weak, but Derek assured them that she was a long term investment, and that someone would pay a fair bit of money for someone like her.
Each day Natali performed her tasks with a smile upon her face. While this was usually just a façade to hide her true emotions, there were times when she realized that she genuinely felt satisfaction after doing her work. Before she knew it, she had gained a reputation amongst the slaves, as the little girl who always smiled.
And so one day, a little past her thirteenth birthday, Natali was sold. A travelling trader who had recently won big gambling, and was off in search of something worth to distribute his wealth. He came across the nameless slave trading facility, and Natali was told to tend to him while the slavers found an appropriate selection of higher quality slaves. The man seemed to take a liking to her, and when the slavers returned he simply asked them ‘How much?’
By the end of the day Natali belonged to the trader, and the slave traders had made a hefty sum off her. She said her farewells to her fellow slaves, and the next morning they left the station. Once again, the masters were the only ones who smiled.
Natali spent little under a year in service to the man, performing all kinds of tasks such as cleaning, cooking and helping him with trades, and more than once the man had turned upon her with lecherous intent. By the time her service with him ended, she felt well and truly broken inside, with no hope of ever returning to the life she once led. That was when the man’s gambling habits got the best of him, and ended up bidding Natali to try and win back what he had lost. Once more, luck was not on his side, and Natali had a new master. A man in his late fifties named Gerard owned her now. Gerard retired from his life as a mercenary, and now spent most of his time at home with his family, tending to his gardens and wine vineyards. This man was kind, always with a quaint smile on his face. He made sure that Natali felt comfortable at all times, and never raised a hand against her for any purpose other than to pat her on the head. She often helped his wife Elia doing housework, and in her spare time she played with his young daughter. For once life seemed to go Natali’s way, and she got on well with the whole family. For the first time in years she was happy.
Happiness however, never lasts. As it turns out, Gerard had once worked for a Hutt in his mercenary days, and the Hutt had not taken so lightly to his sudden decision of retirement. After two years in Gerard’s company, Natali was suddenly torn from her happiness. The Hutt sent men to deal with Gerard, ordering them to bring back anything valuable. They took Elia and Natali, as well as a bunch of credits, burning everything else to the ground. Natali spent the rest of the trip back to Hutt space attempting to help Elia with the loss of her home and loved-ones, but there was little she could do. Elia used her nails to slash her own throat shortly before they landed.
For a time, the Hutt employed her as a Dancer, however eventually she was put to other tasks, the Hutts exotic tastes always looking for new entertainment.
One day while cooking, she was introduced to a new girl - a Miss Raveeya Elskkith, who she was then told to show around the place. Over time, the two developed a bond. Raveeya (or Rav for short) was a young woman in her late twenties who was a pilot before she got caught by Slave-traders and put to work for the Hutts. The two often worked together, always chatting and laughing together in their spare time. Many other slaves despised them for being so light-hearted in the circumstances, but Rav would always answer back “It’s *because* of the circumstances that we act so light-hearted. In all the despair we might as well try to have some fun for ourselves shouldn’t we?”
And it was true. In all the gloom and despair of their enslavement, the two still managed to get as much enjoyment out of their lives as possible.
About six months later, their Hutt master seemed to have gotten into a scuffle with a fellow Hutt, and before they knew what was happening the place was under attack. In all the violence and confusion, the two managed to reach the remaining intact guest spacecrafts, boarding one and taking off as soon as possible. They were lucky Rev use to be a pilot, as the transporter’s auto-pilot system wouldn’t have been able to avoid the stray shots fired to try and take them down before they left the atmosphere. They fled to the nearby Hoth’s Brand system, headed for the planet of Ruusan. Shortly after Rav had planned out a course for the auto-pilot and activated the Hyperdrive, she collapsed to the floor in pain, and Natali finally noticed the small dagger of shrapnel in Rav’s side, which would have been caused by an explosion when they escaped. While she was no doctor, Natali knew that Rav wouldn’t survive even if she treated the wound. The two spent the next few moments speaking quietly with each other. Rav told her of her hopes and dreams and of the future that she wouldn’t be able to have anymore. Natali silently cried beside her, and the two shared a kiss before Rav breathed her last breath.
Hours later, when she finally docked at the Ruusan space port, she took her friend to be buried, and for the past few days has remained at the port, taking odd jobs here and there to make some money.
