Downtown D.C. Ruins, The Capital Wasteland
Struggling behind a foggy haze, the sun slowly began to rise above the skeletal Washington D.C. The early morning had been relatively quiet, and the sunrise was almost serene... If one didn't mind a foreground of mangled buildings and desolation set to the ambiance of distant gunfire and wails, that is. The roaches below scattered slowly, seeking refuge from the closest star and preferring a dark environment rather than the beating heat of the Capital Wasteland's long days. A cool, morning breeze howled through the downtown ruins, as did the muffled cries of feral ghouls. For the vagabond, this was home. The young woman grumbled from her haggard bedroll, reaching groggily for a bottle of Aqua Pura in the dim light of daybreak. Two bottles left. After it had been drained and tossed across the ancient floorboards, she sat up and adjusted the eye patch. A pain stung her eye with every beat of her heart, an all-too-familiar throbbing from her long-vacant eye socket. Ugh. Slept on it. The breeze had found it's way through a broken window, sending the sun-bleached hair whipping across her forehead and carrying with it the sound of emptiness. It was a hollow sound, one that often invaded the young woman's mind with or without a breeze. Bad dreams were common for the vagabond, but often forgotten as quickly as any others. Last night had carried with it one such dream. Running thin fingers through her dirty hair, a yawn escaped her as the darkness began to lift it's veil. Rising from the bedroll and walking stiffly across the cracked tile, she stood barefoot before the eastern windows. Scars covered her body, coverind each limb with painful memories. While watching the sun climb slowly over the hazy horizon, the woman lit a cigarette and placed one hand on a broken window ledge. Memories of the day before came to her as the dreams finally left, and the young woman remained indifferent. Those thugs deserved to die. The hell am I still mullin' on it? The vagabond made her way back to the bedroll, tossed the cigarette from the broken window, and proceeded to dress herself. A raven cawed somewhere outside. Then another. Stopping to smell her tank top, she pulled it over her head with a soft groan. Her clothes were filthy, and had neared the boundary of carrying a stench stronger than sweat. The armor was in need of attention as well, but a walk to any settlement would wait until she finished her job. So close to her goal, hygiene and repairs had been put on hold for lesser causes in the past. Retrieving her gear and tying up her boots, the young woman stretched for a moment and surveyed her temporary home. Time to move on. Soon she was navigating her way out of the ruined Anderson Financial Office. The president's third floor office had been cozy enough, but the vagabond had not planned on staying one more night. Not with the ghouls and muties she had heard last night, moving through the ancient streets so close below. The Brotherhood's presence had failed to keep the monsters out of the darkest areas. They skulked the inner ruins, still dragging helpless wasters away for God knew what unholy acts. Part of the vagabond retained a healthy dose of primal fear. The rest of her retained devout faith in the sniper rifle and her own will. Stay cool, get to the hotel, and get outta downtown before sunset. Easy money, babe.
Downtown D.C. ( Midday ) Descending a mountain of concrete, the young woman managed her way down with more noise than she cared to make. When her boots finally rested on the broken pavement below, Shea tossed the sniper rifle over her shoulder and found another cigarette. Nothing moved. Taking a moment to survey the area, her gaze fixed on a twisted signpost. The names on the rusty signs were impossible to decipher. After a moment of squinting, she dismissed the attempt and continued her journey into a river of skeletal vehicles. The name of the street, which the illiterate vagabond did not understand, still legibly read: Allen Avenue. Nearly two miles down this road, deep in the ruins of D.C., stood a small hotel. It was her destination, and a change to her usual jobs. A snatch instead of a snipe. The young woman thought absently. Sudden prickling sensations were prelude to the radiation, snapping her out of any other thoughts. She had no device in which to measure rads, nor did she understand how they worked, but a gut instinct kept her wide of the crater to the north. A walk through that area, even a brief scout, would likely end in vomiting and the onset of the sickness. She had subjected herself to such unfortunate side effects before. She would not do it again. Her boots carried her southeast, down Allen Avenue. The heavy rifle rode on her armored shoulder, and the young woman cursed it's weight for the thousandth time since the weapon had belonged to her. Time with the weapon had eased it's burden, even strengthened her arms, but the small-framed woman would never find it easy to lug around. When a familiar skittering reached Shea's ears, the vagabond ignored it. Lone roaches were no threat in broad daylight, so she continued on. Shea found herself standing before an intersection, staring at one of the few remaining stop lights in D.C. The device hadn't glowed in centuries, but it's presence was still enough to provoke thoughts. Having been raised with little in the form of education, the light was a mystery to the vagabond. It's alien shape puzzled her in the same way Easter Island had puzzled denizens of the Old World. Get moving. For the next few minutes, she kept to the ruins. While her pace was slowed, this allowed her some degree of camouflage. Moving slowly across the broken storefronts and dark buildings, the young woman raised her weathered rifle. Pausing and looking through it's scope, she surveyed the streets ahead. In the distance stood what was once named The Hubner Hotel. It's right wing had collapsed centuries before when a neighboring office had fallen on it during the Great War. Unidentifiable, rusting hulks remained in a strange grid pattern before it. One door to the entrance hung open, the other gone completely. Nothing but dust moved around the ruined structure, and for this Shea was grateful. She supposed it would be alright to return to the street, cutting her walk time in half. While the vagabond looked from window to window, an unknown object made a loud thunk behind her. Shea spun in the crouching position, dropping the rifle from her eye while keeping it shouldered and ready to fire. Her eye found only a dark, strangely object laying on the sidewalk near a damaged Nuka-Cola machine. Grenade. No sooner had the though sparked into her mind, an explosion shook the street and shattered what little glass remained in the nearby storefront. A rotting Corvega rocked slightly and the tired beams supporting the store's ancient sunroof collapsed. Chunks of brick blew outward, dislodged by sharpnel or the explosion it'self. A chunk of sharpnel tore through one of Shea's water bottles as she fell backwards. Another piece sail past her left shoulder, leaving a bloody cut in the shoulder strap of the vagabond's sport's top. Shea hit the concrete hard, a ringing filling her ears and a stinging in her shoulder. Softly, overpowered by the ring, the young woman heard laughter. "Hah-hah! Got it! Did yah seeyuh!? Tolds yah I could get next human firss try! Still counts, tho she didn't splode! " a voice bellowed somewhere from the adjacent alleyway. A heavy grunt, fueled by pain, fear, anger and disgust, escaped the the vagabond's chapped lips. Muti's. Fuckin' careless. Shea's heart pounded like a hammer as adrenaline surged through her veins like acid. So stupid of me. Move, girl. The vagabond released a roar of effort as she stood up, stumbling down the sidewalk and bashing her left should on the wall of the ruin. Still suffering from the disorientation that comes from nearby grenade trauma, she turned the great rifle and exhaled slowly. Two of 'em. One of 'em got grenados. A different sound echoed through the street now, one of a long-barrel sending a .308 round into the alleyway. Then another. Then a third round to the second mutie. The first round sailed off-mark, smashing into the wall of a former clothing outlet. The second, while still missing the grenade belt, caught the bomber mutant in his unarmored abdomen. The monster stumbled backwards two steps, clutching his yellowed hand over his wound before studying his bloody palm. "You BITCH! You-YOU-YOU DIE!" he howled, trudging across the road, dragging a car axle with a bent rim behind him. Sparks shot from the metal being dragged along the broken asphalt. To a human, the gut-shot would have been a fatal wound. For the monsters lumbering down the road, it was an injury that would heal with enough time. "YOU DIE!" The vagabond rose once again, her mind swirling. Run. Turning quickly, she dashed down the sidewalk. Her legs struggled to keep steady as her hip banged painfully against the shell of a pickup truck. The rifle seemed to weigh a hundred pounds. Slinging it over her back with a heave, the young woman produced the revolver as she sprinted down the broken sidewalk. Shea then spun once again against a leaning streetlight, swiftly emptying six magnum rounds into her pursuers with increasing accuracy. Wheezing softly as she reload, Shea-Victoria's cold blue eye looked for an escape.

Somewhere in the DC Ruins Early Morning
You know what? Sleeping in a dumpster wasn’t so bad. At least… that’s what Rusty thought as he laid there, with his head resting back against his satchel. He looked up at the light filtering through the gap in the lid. It could be more comfortable, but if he got a mattress for the floor… maybe something to use as a pillow. It was always too creepy to sleep in the metro stations, given the ghouls and radroaches. Most buildings were also too often searched by scavengers and the odd mutants looking for supplies. No one looked in the dumpster though. There was never anything in them…. ‘cept the odd hobo. Rusty gave a dumb grin. ‘Guess that makes me a hobo’ he thought. He would’ve laughed if he wasn’t cautious about what lie just outside. He had to admit, the dumpster was rather spacious… enough for two he bet. He even had enough to sit up, so after a few moments he did. Immediately he regretted it. His bones ached from sleeping on a cold metal sheet, causing him to wince. He yawned once… no twice as he stretched and then rubbed his one good eye, making sure to stop himself from rubbing his right eye. Despite this his hand rose anyway, instinctively. It itched slightly. He’d need to give it a clean sooner or later, maybe swap out the bandages. That’d mean finding some bandages or washing the ones he had. Both were tricky in a world with irradiated… well everything. He didn’t really want to waste what little purified water he had either. Rusty sighed a little, moving slightly to rest his back against the taller section of his home, and then dragged his satchel into his lap. What food did he have left anyway…? Opening his satchel, he pulled out his lunchbox. Inside he had several food items wrapped up in small leather pouches to keep them clean. As he looked it could tell he had an apple, some carrots and a few mirelurk cakes. He was keeping the cakes… and the carrots… well… those could just wait. He grabbed the apple and a bottle of his water and dropped the satchel into his lap. He sat there looking at his feet. Maybe he should visit one of the big settlements and get himself a room for a couple of days. That way he could take his boots off for a while… He hadn’t been able to for a while. It was safer to keep them on anyway. He didn’t exactly want to have to go running barefoot through the ruins… that sounded awful. Rusty sighed, he missed home. He missed having someone looking after his back. Maybe that’d change… maybe Reilly would let him join her and her badasses. But he wasn’t nearly experienced enough yet… he’d have to prove himself. He couldn’t stay sitting in this damn dumpster forever either. He’d been there for a few days whilst he explored the ruins looking for something cool. He’d barely found anything. A stimpak, that was cool, but that was about it. It’d fetch a nice price though, so he could sell it and it’d give him a room for a couple of days… At least that’s what he’d hoped. Still, he was a couple of days from any settlement so he had enough time to find something else along the way. That was the plan then, a bit of exploring along the way to Rivet City. Was quite a way off though, would take him a couple of days maybe… Maybe more if he got lost… and most often, he did. Slowly he got to moving. After putting the satchel over his head, he picked up his Chinese assault rifle and slung that over his shoulder too. He finally grabbed up his crowbar and then went to open the lid of the dumpster. He was smirking at his ingeniousness. He had gotten a leather belt and wrapped it around the outer lid handle the dumpster, and then wonder glued a hook to the inside wall of the dumpster so he could clip the leather belt around it and ‘lock’ the lid shut. It wasn’t perfect and anyone who was really looking would see the belt…. But then not many looked around the back of a building in an alley easily missed. Nonetheless, Rusty was cautious as he undid the belt and pushed the lid up. When he was sure he was alone, he climbed out and then stowed the belt away in his satchel. “So… which way is Rivet City again…?” Rusty asked himself frowning. “I need a compass… or a map… or both… actually I need to find a dead guy with one of those pip things on his arm. Then all my problems will be solved I’m sure!” Rusty grinned that stupid grin of his again, before walking off in whatever direction he felt like going in. ---- DC Ruins Midday
“Well I have no idea where I am.” Rusty said as he found a spot on an old roadside bench. It had been four hours and he had gotten himself horribly lost. “All of these buildings look the same, all of them are broken and ruined somehow.” He didn’t really have an eye for details. What he did know was that he wasn’t necessarily where he was supposed to be. He also knew that he wasn’t walking in circles. He’d barely seen any life too. Besides a few molerats and radroaches he had been relatively safe. In fact, now that he thought about it, everything was really quiet today. No muties or scavengers passing… Not even some raiders. Wonder what was up. Were they all avoiding him maybe? He glanced down the road. There was a hotel… at least that looked like a hotel. Maybe there was a tourist board inside; it might’ve pointed him in the right direction. He grinned a bit. “Perfect! That’ll be where I go.” He grinned as he got up and started waltzing down towards the hotel. By now, he had his rifle in his hands now, instead of his crowbar, which sat on his hips in a makeshift holster. You could never be too careful in the DC ruins. Even if it was quiet and… somewhat pleasant. It would’ve been better if he was sat up on the deck of Rivet City, dangling his legs off the side and watching the people come and go. He’d done that once, a few months back. It was nice to feel protected. He hadn’t felt like that in… a good while. He breathed a small distracted sigh as he kicked a small rock at a car. It made a satisfying clang as it did. Rusty blinked as it did, but then suddenly something exploded nearby. “What?!” Rusty exclaimed loudly. His heart skipped a beat thinking he’d cause the explosion, but as he saw the old wreck still in it’s well, wreck state, it was clear it wasn’t him. Rusty cursed his stupidity when he realised the explosion had been a bit of a ways off, when it was followed by gunshots. “Ohh boy, peace never lasts~” the boy sung as he broke into a sprint. He raced off towards the sound of the gunshots. He knew this was probably Mutie territory… but if someone was in danger, he had no choice but to help. Sure enough as he got to an intersection, he looked around the corner to see some girl fighting off two mutants. He stared wide eyed at the two. One was big, with explosives strapped to him. “Shit.” Was all he could get out, as he rushed across the street to what had been a bus shelter before the war. “Oh she got him!” Rusty said loudly as he peeked around the corner. He’d got a good flanking position on the mutant as his street intersected theirs. Luckily for him, the girl had disappeared around the corner as she retreated. With a heavy, nervous sigh, Rusty took aim and fired. The overly loud assault rifle echoed loudly against the buildings as he let rip. He was never used to that, but he fired regardless, leaning the rifle on one of the bars of the shelter to steady his aim. The second mutant was hit right in the shoulder when Shea fired at it, immediately it screamed loudly. “Yeeeaargghh!” it shouted, going to move towards her. Suddenly a hail of bullets rained over the mutants, causing it to drop its hunting rifle to the ground. It appeared the mutant had been about to fire in the girl’s direction when it was flanked on its left. “They’s ah nurther un! Riut ovah-” it was interrupted as Rusty continued firing, diving behind a wreck of a car, though his flank was now exposed to Shea. Given it was now without a gun, having dropped it in the street through shock. Rusty turned his attention to the one with the explosives. He fired a couple of rounds in it’s direction, more hoping to distract it than anything else. It was angry now, and an angry mutant with explosives was never a good sign.

“They’s ah nurther un! Riut ovah-”
The newcomer's assault rifle barked again, sending a new burst of rounds into the left of the two super-mutants as he maneuvered. From a distance the most stubborn ravens finally abandoned Allen Avenue in fits of squawking. The sidewalk suddenly stood empty, with the small woman no where to be seen. Dust still fell lazily from the explosion, being pushed around by the low breeze.
The larger mutant, fuming with a rage deeper than any man could muster, lifted the car axle high over his head. The rim smashed down onto a rusty car, causing one of the strut towers to burst upwards through the hood as the vehicle's front end dropped to the broken street. Raising the weapon once again, the monstrosity brought it down on the rear portion of the vehicle in a vulgar display of physical power.
"Know yer place, ya dirty Pinkies! Little Pinkies! Gah! We gunna make you scream an' cry for days! Hurt you bad!" he bellowed, allowing the makeshift mallet to stick out of the rusty vehicle while he turned to face the newcomer's position. Smoke slowly rose from the ancient fusion engine, which had taken the brunt of the second blow. "Sneak ups n' US you tink!?" the mutant sneered, taking a few heavy steps towards the bust stop. "Now YOU gets 'sploded like a roach!"
Fumbling with it's grenade belt, the monster laughed mockingly. His sausage-like fingers produced another frag grenade, holding it before him like a priceless gem for a brief moment. His left hand released the creatures gut wound long enough to grasp the grenades pin between it's massive thumb and index finger.
An ominous sound echoed quietly from the broken window of the storefront, the sound of metal sliding across metal. From the second floor window ( which now stood open and without a frame thanks to the explosion a moment before ) a tubular object made of metal appeared slowly. Shea's cold blue eye stared through the scope, find the damaged automobile as she licked her lips. Through the lens she saw the young man frantically searching for better cover as the giant approached him.
For a brief moment, the vagabond considered leaving the young man behind and making a break for the Hubner Hotel alone. She quickly dismissed the thought, partly because she knew they'd continue looking for her after they had killed the boy, and partly because of the deep desire that began to burn in her heart. Vengance was one of the few things that Shea enjoyed in life, and before her stood a perfect opportunity.
The mutie began pulling the pin from the grenade.
The vagabond pulled the trigger of the rifle, sending dust puffing out of the window and onto the sidewalk below. The shot echoed for a mile across the ruins. The bullet flew across the street before the sound did, slamming into an exhaust port on the old Chrysulus Corvega's fusion-powered V-10 engine. The already damaged engine bay arced several times. Shea dove to the floor of the ancient store, landing painfully on her left hip once again.
It happened quickly. The engine arced one final time as it detonated, sending shrapnel and metal chunks in all directions while a nuclear fireball engulfed the wreckage. The larger mutant, who had been in the process of throwing the grenade, was blindsided by the blast. The grenade exploded just as it left his massive fingers, tearing the mutant's forearm away and causing him to twist painfully as the twin blasts took him off his feet. Chunks of metal, shards of glass, and loads of dust rained across Allen Avenue. A sign snapped free of it's rusty chains, narrowly missing the young man as it bounced down the road and into a wrecked pickup truck noisily.
The first mutant lay on the street, dazed from his various new wounds. A massive heart pumped quarts of thick, dark blood onto the road and along the cracks in the asphalt like tiny drain ditches. The blood spurted from his mangled right forearm like a water sprinkler, and the flopping tendrils of torn flesh still intact looked like his appendage had grown the hideous tentacles of a squid. A few chunks of the Corvega's grill stuck from the mutie's neck, the dirty chrome glistening in the daylight. Writhing on the street violently, the monster called to his companion.
"Bitch... 'sploded me... Gah! Huroog! Fah... bitch... sploded ME." It growled as the remains of the Corvega burned beside it. "...Bitch spl-"
A second shot echoed out from the window, this bullet smashing through the mutie's horrific teeth and into the base of it's skull. The creature trashed violently, then became still. Three grenades remained on it's belt, covered in dust and blood.
Frantically reloading her rifle, Shea switched windows.
"Covering you!" she cried from the storefront, attempting to get the second mutie's attention and let the newcomer know she was still sniping from the general store's damaged second floor windows.

With a wide eye Rusty got nervous. It… was coming for him now. That was the plan alright, but he didn’t think he truly believed that. So now it was barrelling down on him, grasping for its grenade pins. “Oh shit!” Rusty exclaimed getting ready to make a break for it. The shelter might’ve deflected a few bullets, protected him for a bit, but it wasn’t going to stop a grenade. He looked across the street hoping to see better cover within sprinting distance. He had no idea where the girl had gone; frankly, he didn’t even get a good look at her after she vanished during the fight with the mutants. Maybe she’d left him..? He wouldn’t exactly blame her if she did. He understood the fear everyday people had with these muties. It’s why more of them didn’t occupy parts of DC, despite offering a lot more shelter than other places in the wastes. Besides the odd few scavs and prospectors with more caps in mind than sense, no one ventured into the deep ruins. What exactly was he doing here again?
Rusty shook his head quickly. ‘Keep your mind in the battle, idiot’ he thought, getting ready to fire again. He hadn’t realised how quiet the scene had gotten, besides the erratic threats coming from the mutant. Without him shooting it had gotten relatively quiet. He wasn’t entirely sure what the other mutant was doing. Rusty stole a glance its way. It was watching him carefully, and when it saw him looking its way, it quickly rushed out and scooped up its hunting rifle. “Arh harh!” it chuckled. It began to raise its gun to fire in Rusty’s direction when suddenly a shot came from one of the buildings.
Rusty almost leapt out of his jacket at the sudden noise. She didn’t leave him?! That stupid grin was back on his face. It wasn’t until he realised what exactly she had shot that that he visibly got pale. “Well…” was all he could muster. He didn’t have time to move. If he moved he’d be showered in more shrapnel than he ever cared for. The shelter would protect him… he… thought.
The shockwave rattled the shelter, knocking Rusty to his knees. Shrapnel flew at him hitting the barred walls of the shelter, though some smaller bits did hit him, cutting his exposed skin on his face and neck. Thankfully they were mostly superficial, and be barely even noticed them. As he looked up, he saw a sign race past his face, making him push himself back to avoid getting hit. He coughed a little as the dust cloud came… That was one thing he hated about the ruins. So much dust it got everywhere. He blinked a bit getting his bearing, before pushing himself up with a hand on the bench. Then he turned his attention to the mutant who had previously been about to attack him.
It was on the ground. “Good” he breathed, coughing a bit as he looked over its apparent corpse. Blood seeped out of its wound. Rusty would’ve said its arm had been blown clean off… but it wasn’t. It was a bloody mess. As it called out to its brethren, Rusty raised his gun again. Somehow he’d managed to keep a hold of it in the fight. He raised it quickly, looking for the second mutant who’d been knocked down by the blast too and cut in various places. It climbed up slightly, raised its gun and then suddenly a second shot. The first had been killed, and now the kid was… running at the second mutant?
Rusty hadn’t wasted any time, now knowing the two now had the mutie out numbered. Two muties were tricky business; one on its own was… somewhat easy pickings. Rusty shouted bloody murder as he ran. Surprising the mutant it let out a few shots without aiming, missing Rusty by ‘miles’ and on the third shot, the gun jammed. Rusty grinned broadly. He stopped, shouldered the gun and emptied the last of his bullets into the mutant’s chest, abdomen and neck. The mutant fell back against a car, struggling for breath as Rusty shouldered the assault rifle and picked up his crowbar out of its ‘sheath’. He was quickly standing above the last mutant, before swinging the crowbar down against the mutant’s neck. As the crowbar’s teeth impacted the mutant’s neck, he pulled it out and struck again. He continued until the mutant moved no more, and hit it twice for good measure.
When it was all over, Rusty breathed out loudly. “Fuck mutants.” He heaved, leaning against the wreck of an old car. This wasn’t how he wanted to start his day. He didn’t want to start any day like this. He sighed heavily again before looking to the window he’d guess the woman was in now. When he caught sight of her he waved. “Uhm… coast’s clear. Probably. Ya wanna come down so I can thank ya?”

The vagabond stood before the broken window, staring down at the young man she had just witnessed beating a mutie to death with a common crow bar. A phrase came to her mind, something from the Old World, but she couldn't quite remember the saying. Like most deep thought, it was abandoned. Following a brief pause, Shea slung the rifle over her shoulder by it's leather strap, then adjusted her armor. The mutants remained silent below. Vanishing from the window, her descent was silent.
Another breeze kicked down Allen Avenue, disturbing a fair amount of fresh dust as it gusted along the rotting motor vehicles and soon-to-be rotten mutants. The young boy stood alone before the ruins for a couple of minutes until the vagabond finally emerged, appearing from a different building than the one she had just used as her rifle nest. After glancing all around the street, studying the rooftops, and listening for a moment, she became satisfied with their safety. The vagabond came into the light of the open street.
Shea walked slowly towards the unknown young man, her rifle on her back and her revolver in it's holster under her arm. She did not appear to have a melee weapon. The thin young woman stood before the stranger and eyed him over, then leaned back against the mangled pilar of the bus stop. Blood marred her sports top from fresh frag wounds, and her shorts were tattered and dirty as well. The girl stunk of sweat and gunpowder, but her most distinguishing features were the light blond hair and the numerous scars across her body.
A chuckle escaped Shea as leaned on her armored right arm. Her left hand fished about to her battered cargo shorts, producing a cigarette and lighting it with the dexterity of muscle memory. Exhaling into the dusty breeze, the vagabond spoke to him.
"Shea-Victoria Laguna." the young woman said slowly, making sure she gave the stranger her full name upon introductions. It wasn't that Shea had much sense of formalities as much as a subliminal urge to use her full name as often as possible. Likely it had resulted from the whole identity crisis in the Pitt.
"...Don't thank me, we're square. Never seen someone beat a mutie with a tire iron 'fore. ...Who are you?"

As the girl vanished from the window, pushing his hips up onto the wreck so he could sit on the bonnet, with his boots rested on the old tireless wheel. He slipped off his satchel and moved it to his side, looking over at the corpses of the mutants. Watching them suspiciously he half expected them to jump up again, grab him or start chewing on his leg. It didn’t happen though… though he’d probably have a nightmare that night where that happened. His leg got itchy just thinking about it.
Rusty didn’t even notice the girl come out of a building at first. In fact, he just idly sat on the car itching at his leg, as the creepy mental image refused to leave his mind. ‘Gah, why do I do this to myself?’ he asked himself before he realised the girl had once again appeared. The first thing he noticed was her eyepatch. It was quite obvious he noticed too, because his hand instinctively went up to his. “How about that….” He muttered to himself as she got closer. He then noticed the blood from her wounds and looked her over quickly. She’d need to get that looked at some point, though from the rest of her body it looked like she was used to the wounds. He had a troubled look in his eye for a second, before it faded when it fell upon her hair. She was a complete polar opposite of him. Her blond, to his black. They couldn’t have looked any more different.
As she got close and leaned against the shelter he’d previously took cover in, he raised his eyebrow at her, waiting for her to speak. She then chuckled? What did she find funny? Whatever it was, it was lost on him. She soon revealed herself to be a smoker, which was something Rusty had never tried, nor thought about trying. Hell, he’d only ever sold the chems he’d found lying about the ruins. Then never brought much in, but it was usually enough to get some food or water for a while.
So her name was Shea-Victoria Laguna…? That was an awful long name. He was only called plain old Rusty. He wasn’t sure if he had a name, or if his family had just neglected to tell him. Compared to this girl though, his name was well, mundane. He wondered where she got that kind of name, though it was probably best he didn’t ask. Instead he just gave her a sort of nod. The boy’s cheeks reddened with slight embarrassment when Shea had spoken about him beating on a mutant. He guessed no one really HAD seen that before. Mutants were tough sonsabitches but when you’re out of bullets and staring down at a dying mutant you’ll use anything to make sure it’s dead. Besides, he only really used it to break things open. Rusty caused an awkward moment of silence, before stuttering slightly. “Uhm… Ru-Rusty. Just, just Rusty. That’s all. Nothing more really.” He rubbed at the back of his neck and looked around. “Nice to uhhh… meetcha. I guess. What’re you doing out here alone with these guys hanging about anyway? I mean I know I am too, but I’m lost and I have no idea where to go… but you look like you’re here for some reason and uhm… I’m rambling.” He rattled off, as it finally dawned on him. This was the first conversation he’d ever had with a member of the opposite sex, that wasn’t in the presence of someone else. He wasn’t prepared for this, he wasn’t prepared for this at all.

“Uhm… Ru-Rusty. Just, just Rusty. That’s all. Nothing more really.”
"Rusty. Got it." Shea replied with the thinnest of smirks. As he looked around, the young woman's cold blue eye followed his wavering gaze, meeting it again once he continued speaking. The eye drank in every detail of the stranger, including his missing eye. It seemed both of them had experienced the love and safety of the Wasteland.
“Nice to uhhh… meetcha. I guess. What’re you doing out here alone with these guys hanging about anyway? I mean I know I am too, but I’m lost and I have no idea where to go… but you look like you’re here for some reason and uhm… I’m rambling.”
Shea studied the young man for a few long moments, taking another drag of her cigarette before speaking. Smoke spilled from her nostrils as she did so. "You're ah real charmer, Rusty." the vagabond replied lightly, giving him another look up and down.
"I was on my way to yonder hotel when these two... well who knows what they were trying to do besides kill me. Luckily for me, you got all the spunk of a pissed-off Yao-Guai. An' luckily for you, I jus' happen to know these particular ruins like a molerat knows her own caves. An even trade, eh?" the vagabond said, standing free of the pillar and crouching beside Rusty. In truth she was embellishing, but the young woman knew the area well enough to find her way out. She was also downplaying her own combat skill, as was part of her approach. Thin fingers approached him cautiously, plucking two small pieces of metal from his shoulder and flicking them onto the corpse of the smaller mutant. Giving him an falsely apologetic look, the girl continued:
"Who knows how many creeps heard our guns and tha explosions, kid." She stated matter-of-factly, glancing at the shadows along the road. Shea then nodded towards the broken hotel looming in the distance. "Those grenades might come in handy. We can talk on tha way to the hotel, if it pleases yah."
Shea gave Rusty little time to react as she stood, taking another long drag of the cigarette before tossing it, too, onto the corpse of the mutant. Stretching her legs and rubbing her hip, the former slave then resumed moving down Allen Avenue. Pleased to find Rusty following her, Shea-Victoria made her way through the last of the rotting cars, reaching the hotel's parking lot in only a few minutes.
Shea stepped softly around the broken doors to the Hotel. Stopping near the lobby's welcome mat ( which was weathered, charred, and nearly rotten away ), the vagabond watched Rusty approach the shattered doorway.
"Watch the glass." Shea said quietly, fearful of the sound alerting any nearby squatters. After they stood quietly for a few minutes and no sounds were heard from the building, she glanced at Rusty's reaming eye with her own cold blue eye. "If there's ah ambush, it's gonna be in this lobby." the young woman whispered, checking the drum of her revolver.
Looking over the young man once again, she added quietly: "You look tense. Relax, I don't want to catch a bullet in my ass by accident. ...Finger over the trigger, not on it. Most folks fingers flinch just enough tah fire a fine-triggered weapon like that when they are surprised." Pausing for a moment, she spoke again after studying the rifle. "That's a good find, there." she added, nodding towards the weapon. While she didn't care to personally use the Chinese AR's, mostly because they kicked like a brahmin and chewed through ammo like one too, the vagabond respected the weapon's reliable design, large magazine, and impressive damage.
As they slowly searched the lobby, Shea-Victoria was careful to avoid any broken glass or potentially noisy debris. With the exception of a few long-dead waster corpses and a dusty old radroach carapace, the lobby was uninhabited. The vagabond stopped momentarily at the seared outline of a bomb victim on the wall, then resumed her search. It was not that she felt sadness for the person who created the image so much as being perplexed as to how the silhouette was created.
When the young woman felt the area was safe, she paused near the clerk's desk and began searching through the many discolored files and rusty keys. As she did so, Shea spoke in a normal tone once again.
"We're still makin' decent time, kid. Plan is to find a briefcase on the second floor and get outta this part of DC before nightfall. With two eyes, this will go alot faster." she chuckled quietly as she opened another drawer. "So where you from, Rusty? An' how'd you lose yers?"

“I’m a what now?” Rusty said in utter disbelief, before giving a slight snort. “Good one.” He gave a slight smirk. He was always a bit slow on the uptake, but he caught up eventually. She made a joke, he liked that. It wasn’t often people made jokes with him, especially on his first meeting with them. Then again, it’s not like he’d met an awful lot of people before.
As she referenced the hotel, he looked back over at it. He’d seen it on his way here. He’d planned to go there for a while himself. He listened all the while, giving her another glance. A grin spread on his lips as she said she knew the place like the back of her hand. That sounded great. He beamed slightly at her “Sure, sure! Whatever ya say, Shea” he gave a small childish smirk. Rusty then watched as she got close, his pale green eye widened slightly. He would’ve asked what she was doing, especially as she reached out to him. The words just escaped him, instead he just watched her, lowering his head slightly. He hadn’t even noticed bits of metal that had embedded them in the shoulder of his jacket. Great, he thought, another hole. He shook his head and looked over to the mutants.
Have seen the grenades at a mention of them, Rusty moved into action. He slid off the wreck bounced on his feet. “I’m good with grenades… and mines… or well, any old explosive. Dad taught me, plus I got a keen eye for that stuff.” He explained walking over to the mutant. He hesitated over the corpse for a moment, still expecting it to jump up and grab him. Bending over, he reached down and grabbed up the grenades before opening the satchel and stowing them inside. Once the satchel was on his back again, he walked over and grabbed up the mutant’s hunting rifle. He gave it a look over for a second, before unloading the bullets. “Hey uh, Shea. Does your gun take these? Cause you can have ‘em if you want. Otherwise I’m just gonna stick ‘em in my bag till we see someone.” Had she have taken them, he’d have shot her a grin, otherwise however he’d have just stowed them away just like the grenades. With the rifle unloaded, he stuck the rifle to his satchel and tied it on, so it rested against his back. He was used to lugging junk around on his back, what was another six pounds? Once Shea started moving, Rusty went right after her. Giving her a little space, Rusty followed and took the opportunity to reload his assault rifle. Replacing the empty magazine with one of two full ones he kept in a pouch on his hip.
Soon enough they were entering the lobby of the hotel. Whilst Rusty noticed Shea taking a more cautious approach, Rusty himself stood almost without a care. In fact, had he not been told, Rusty would’ve stepped right onto some glass. “Oh.” He whispered, awkwardly avoiding the glass. Just what he would’ve needed. Glass in his shoes. He was thankful, yet again for Shea’s interference. Rusty remained quiet, and moved close to Shea, gazing around a bit. He shot her a worried look as she said ambush.
She immediately gave him advice, for her own benefit, but advice all the same. With a nod, Rusty loosened his grip some on his rifle, before shooting her something of a smile.
“What? Oh, my rifle, yeah. Thanks… I uh… got it from one of the mutants back…Nevermind” Rusty trailed off, looking away slightly. He bit his lip. Maybe he wasn’t really prepared to talk about that just yet. At least not with an outward stranger… even if he did like her already.
Moving on through the hotel, Rusty followed Shea’s movements. After seeing the way she did her thing, it was obvious that he would be wise to learn from her. It’d pay him well in the future. Rusty looked over the waster corpses as they passed by to find anything of interest, though ultimately, beyond a few rags there wasn’t really anything worth taking. So the boy ignored them and followed on after Shea. When she stopped, Rusty followed her eyesight and tilted his head. A petrified silhouette was stamped on the wall. His mother had said the bombs did it… that was a good enough explanation for him.
Rusty found his spot on the other side of the clerk’s desk letting Shea search. He quietly placed his assault rifle down and watched her. He knew she was looking for something specific now. He didn’t ask though, just let her work as he glanced around the reception area. “Oh, cool. A briefcase? Sounds all secret like, like in those comics dad got his hands on.” He spoke more to himself than to her. “Though getting outta here sounds great too.” With a few nods he looked the floor over, before finally turning back to Shea. “I Uh… I guess it was in the north area. They used to say it was the business district. We had this little office building with the basement all cleared out and cleaned. You probably wouldn’t even know it’s there if you weren’t looking for it… But for us it was home.”
There was a brief, sad pause from Rusty before he continued. “That was until the muties came. They broke in, took me prisoner. When I woke up one of them… he uhhh…” Rusty’s hand moved up and rubbed under the bandages that he kept around his head. It itched terribly, but thinking about it made it worse. Nonetheless, Rusty continued “t-took his knife to it, that’s… about it really.”

The Hubner Hotel, D.C. Ruins So super mutants had attacked his family and took his eye? The backstory clicked perfectly for Shea, and then she understood better the young man's eagerness to help another person, stranger or not, fight off muties. Eager to keep Rusty's mind off whatever trauma still lingered, the vagabond quickly changed the subject. Best for him to stay cool. "Lost mine to a raider, although his idea was tah kill me. Rebar pierced it..." Shea had carefully used the word "raider" for the purpose of being vague. "Pitt Slaver" would have been much more accurate, but she had refrained. "A stranger was kind to me when it needed tendin' ...Hold still." The weathered young woman climbed nimbly onto the counter top, squatting before Rusty while holstering her revolver. Sweat ran down her dirty neck and over the slave brand. Jerking her head slightly to free her eye of obstructing blond bangs, she then placed her left hand on the young man's left shoulder to steady herself. The thin fingers of her right hand grasped the leather eye patch carefully, pulling it away just enough to see the socket it concealed. A moment of study passed, and Shea attempted not to breath directly into Rusty's face. Although the young woman had little interest in appeal to anyone, she suspected her breath was unpleasant nonetheless. She'd been in the ruins for over a week and without mouthwash for days. Sorry kid. she thought. The eye socket appeared swollen and inflamed. "Alright Rusty, change of plan. We're still gonna get tha case and split, but as soon as we hit tha suburbs we're getting you to a doctor. Yah need antibiotics, and that can be hard to find on short notice. Lucky fer you I know most of tha medics round here. You'll be alright for a while." Shea said softly as she replaced the leather eypatch. "Let me know if yah start getting headaches." Climbing off the dusty counter, the vagabond resumed her search of drawers. The kid impressed her, to have such a feel for his weapon at such relative inexperience. Unfortunately, his morals would need to be tested as well. Shea needed to know what she was working with before she started building on it. Her mind ran methodically as she searched. Plucking a key from a moldy envelope, Shea-Victoria gave Rusty a smirk. "Here we go. These hotels always have spare keys in tha offices." the woman said as she pocketed the rusty key. "Alright, let's go." She led Rusty down a corridor strewn with debris of all shapes and sizes. A file cart lad charred and empty, it's contents having been seared away hundreds of years ago. Cautiously pushing open a door to the stairwell, Shea scanned the area with her revolver. She then gave a nod to Rusty, and the odd pair made their way to the second floor in silence. She made her way down the hallway with a growing persistence. Although her steps remained quiet, the young woman was nearly jogging when the reached their destination.
"Stay quiet until I open the door. I'm gonna swing in on the right, you follow me in and move to the left of the doorway. If there's danger, shoot first and we'll figure it out later." she said quietly while approaching Room 19. The vagabond knelt, checked the hall one last time, then proceeded to insert the key slowly. When it had been turned with care, Shea-Victoria have the young man one last glance before kicking the door open.
Shea entered the room as the door smashed off the wall, her revolver held in her right hand. As planned, she strafed to the right wall while training her weapon on the rotting room's formerly lone occupant.
Before them sat a man sporting a dark mohawk. His bare arms were covered in badly done tattoos. Beside him sat a shotgun, on the dresser a freshly opened Nuka-Cola, and at the foot of the bed sat the damaged briefcase.
I'm guessin' ya don't work fer Snake? I don-" the man spoke as he leaned to his left. Shea replied by sending a magnum round into his skull. The guy was thrown back against the bed as another stain joined the numerous blotches on the ancient bed. The sound of the revolver rang in Shea and the young man's ears, having been fired in such a small room.
"Rusty, grab tha case." Shea-Victoria said quietly.

The boy had become quiet after he finished speaking, just sort of studying her face for her reaction. He didn’t want to be a victim, but he’d seen the eyes of pity before and he didn’t necessarily want to see them again. Thankfully it didn’t come. Instead there was almost a look of understanding in her eye. He gave a quick sigh at her reaction, but then she surprised him. She told him about her wound. So… a raider had done that to her. He had only seen raiders a few times in his life… not all that often in the deeper parts of the ruins. That was because of the mutants. Even raiders knew it was a stupid idea to mess with the mutants. It sounded like a painful experience… not something he ever wanted to experience again. He shot her a quick respectful nod.
When told to hold still, he raised his barely visible eyebrow at her. “Huh?” she then climbed up onto the counter and squatted. He was even more confused when she grabbed a hold of his shoulder. “Uhhh.. okay…?” he continued still a bit bewildered by the situation he had now found himself in. When she got close, he breathed in her scent, he hadn’t really noticed it before. Though he only thought of it for a moment, he mentally shrugged it off. He’d no idea how he smelt. He’d slept in a dumpster for a few nights, before that in a dusty old bus cargo compartment. He couldn’t have smelled that great either. In fact, he was desperate for a wash of some kind… Though getting clean water was something of a task in the wasteland. Even if you did get close the mirelurks would soon be after ya. Getting water from anywhere else was just more trouble than it was worth or irradiated to all hell. He wondered for a second… maybe the water collection system his parents had made was still in place..? The mutants probably wrecked it in the fight…. If he was honest he didn’t stick around the place too long after that. Home didn’t feel… like home.
In a show of kindness the girl offered to take him to a doctor, he trusted her judgement. It did feel hot and itchy most of the time, so what she said did seem on point. Perhaps it was time to go find a doctor. Seemed she was up for taking him too. He gave a small smile. “Sure. Will do.” He acknowledged before he watched her get back to work. He’d almost forgotten about what she was heard to do, having been caught up in the moment. It was clear Shea didn’t though. She was like an arrowhead, hitting her mark. Soon she found the key and he gave a small nod to the mention of spares. “I’ll keep that in mind if I ever decide to hole-up in a room. Make sure to put a chair under the handle or something.” Truth be told, after what the rangers had told him about their experience in a hotel, Rusty had avoided the buildings. Seeing as he didn’t want to wake up to the sound of mutants walking outside of his room. So he opted for places people didn’t really like to sleep in, where people would never look for… well, people. He’d scared quite a few scavengers by bursting out of the trunk of a car when they’d been trying to open it.
When told to follow, Rusty followed without hesitation. Ever the good soldier, he knew she knew what was best. Once he’d gathered his rifle, he kept behind her. He made sure to be careful, keeping his finger off the trigger, and looking around cautiously. He wondered how much stuff had been left and protected in this kind of place. If he avoided this kindsa places a lot of others would too. The mutants weren’t exactly interested in scavenging either. He supposed that’s what they were here for. On the trail of something valuable left long ago by someone or another.
When she began moving quickly he moved quickly too, though he was getting hesitant. What if he made a mistake somehow? Alerted whatever was hiding in here to their presence. He listened as they moved… didn’t hear anything besides their footsteps. Maybe they really were alone?
He’d been about to talk when suddenly they began moving slower. They were almost there now. At least that’s what logic told him. She began to tell him the strategy and he gave a sort of nod. He could do that… He hoped. Just go left, shoot first, how hard could it be?
Carefully he watched her hand turn the key in the lock and then when he was given a look, he nodded at her. Time for some action! He gripped his rifle, checked it over and then Shea kicked the door open. Weakened by time, or simply by Shea’s hidden strength, the door was suddenly off the wall. Surprised but not thwarted, Rusty moved in after her, following her orders and moving immediately left. He scanned the room, catching sight of a lone man, sat in front of them. Rusty gave him a look, as if to say ‘who is this?’ Unsure how to proceed, Rusty looked over at Shea.
“I’m guessin’ ya don’t work fer Snake? I don’t-” was all the man said before he leaned to the left. Rusty was about to ask the man who Snake was before Shea suddenly put a bullet in him. The loud shot ringed in his ear. Confusion from the sudden shot and the loud noise disorientated him for a moment. His eye widened as much as possible. He’d seen mutants die before… he’d seen raiders gunned down too. He’d done the killing in those instances. He’d never been one to attack first and this… this was something… different. He got a little pale for a moment, before looking slowly at the shotgun lying next to this man. He stood frozen for a moment… Had she… just saved him? The scene flashed in front of his eye for a brief moment. He’d seen the guy leaning, but what direction…? He’d forgotten in the heat of the moment…. This guy must’ve been going for his gun right…?
Rusty eyed Shea for answers. He was almost fearful of her for the first time since he met her. Did she do this often…? Shoot first and ask questions later. That almost sounded like a Talon company thing to do. Rusty bit his lip hard, nervous. Maybe he was right. Maybe she’d killed him before he got a shot at them. Whatever the case, this mission of hers was a bit more complicated than he was led to believe.
Having almost not heard her before, Rusty was slow to respond… when he did however he gave the corpse a wide birth. “Uhm… fine… But…” Rusty rasped. Moving over he slowly reached down and tentatively picked up the briefcase in one hand. “Tell me… tell me he was going for the gun and you killed him before he hit us…? That’s what you did right?”

Room 19, The Hubner Hotel D.C. Ruins
Shea observed Rusty biting his lip and becoming visibly rigid again as he picked up the briefcase, which now had red stains speckled across it's leather side. As the shaken young man made his way back to the hotel room's entrance, the vagabond studied him quietly while the magnum's single empty casing was switched for a fresh .357 round. The empty casing was placed in her pocket as Rusty spoke. “Tell me… tell me he was going for the gun and you killed him before he hit us…? That’s what you did right?” "I killed a man who might have been tryin' to get to the trigger of that weapon. Gut told me it wasn't worth risking you or I gettin' shot." Shea said just loudly enough that Rusty could hear it despite the fading ring in their ears. Her tone was oddly apathetic as she spoke, with emotion behind the words themselves. Just facts, in her mind. Shoot or be shot. Shea-Victoria moved slowly to the bed, searching the dead man quietly. Her eye remained on Rusty the entire time. "Keep yer eye on tha door. He probably didn't come here alone." she said while pocketing a handful of his belongings. Hopping over the body, Shea grasped the man's belt and dragged him off the mattress. She allowed him to slump beside the night table as she overturned the mattress with her boot. Beneath it was a sweat-stained sock filled with small, rattling objects. The vagabond tied it to her belt quickly, giving Rusty a look that implied it's owner no longer needed the caps. Stepping over the mattress and opening the drawer of the night stand, Shea allowed the empty drawer to clatter onto the floor. Standing up and brushing her hair from her eye, she looked to her new traveling companion. He was frightened of her, and that was just his gut warning him of the obvious truth. The girl with one eye was capable of killing a human being and not thinking twice about it. She supposed it was beyond her control how he would choose to take it, justified or not. "Time to go. Grab the shotgun if you like, might go for a decent price." The woman said as she walked towards Rusty. Her left arm grasped a leather strap, swinging the DKS rifle under her arm and into her hands. Shea-Victoria stepped out into the hallway, covering them as she waited for the young man. They moved down the second floor corridor quickly and quietly, with the bag of caps only slightly rustling as the neared the stairwell's door. The briefcase was heavy as well, obviously containing metal as some part of it's cargo. A rusty lock shown near it's handle. Shea held the ancient door open so that Rusty could pass unobstructed, then followed him down the stair with he barrel of the sniper rifle scanning the well below. As they reached the first floor's rusting door, the mercenary nodded to it.
She slunk through it after it was opened by her new companion, scanning the first floor's charred hallway and the distant lobby. The young woman continued to stay low as she advanced, motioning for Rusty to do the same. As they neared the entrance to the lobby, a man stepped into their view. He, too, wore tattoos and battered gear typically seen on raiders and bar-brawlers.
"Hold it! Drop tha fuckin' case!" he spat, raising his battered 10mm SMG. "You're dead!"
Shea-Victoria hesitated for a moment as the grizzled man pulled the slide on his weapon, her on Rusty instead of the guy.

Giving her explanation, she told him what he needed to know. Rusty gave her a small nod, before looking back over the corpse. He wasn’t totally satisfied, just it was good enough… at least enough for him to live with. That wouldn’t necessarily mean he wouldn’t feel bad about it. It wasn’t worth the risk. He could’ve been anyone for all Rusty knew. Still, he’d be a little more cautious of the stranger now. She was looking to protect herself; he didn’t believe she killed senselessly. He could understand that at least… It’s what he did with mutants all the time. With raiders he was a little more cautious, but he understood the shoot first, ask questions later policy.
Once she started searching the body, he sighed briefly. It was necessary. Besides, the guy wouldn’t need it anymore.
Hesitantly he moved to get a better look at the door. He held his rifle up, just in case, and let her search the room. He heard the jingling and gave her a quick look. “Mmmhmm.” He muttered a bit, as if understanding, before going back to stare a bit at the door. How often would something happen around her? Would he need to pull the trigger to save them? His stomach twirled at the thought. He gave a brief sigh to calm himself before rolling his shoulders a bit.
Hoping she was done soon, Rusty thought about the fresh air away from the fresh scent of blood. The room had gotten a lot smaller since the shot.
Finally it was time. He quickly took a step towards the door, allowing her to pass, before giving her a quick nod when she told him about the shotgun. “Good idea,” he nodded. He daintily stepped over to the body, whilst careful not to touch it; he reached over and grabbed the shotgun. Like he had before, he made a point to unload the gun and stow away the bullets before finding a place to stick the shotgun on his bag. Once he was sure it was secured, he moved after her as she stepped into the hallway.
With briefcase in hand, Rusty grimaced. He’d become a packrat. How he wished he had a Brahmin right about now. He could probably manage to keep up, but he knew he’d be sore in the morning. What was even in this briefcase anyway? He looked down at the rusty lock, and then glanced at his crowbar. Would it be a crime to jimmy the lock off and see what was in it? Giving a glance to Shea, he knew she probably had some contract not to look inside.
When she opened the door for him, Rusty whispered a “thanks” before landing on the first floor. Rusty continued in silence walking to the next door, and then opened it after letting the assault rifle swing for a moment. Continuing on, Rusty leaned down slightly, his footsteps as light as he could make them, though with two guns on his back, an assault rifle in one hand and a briefcase on the other, it wasn’t exactly an easy task.
As they reached the lobby a guy stepped into their way. Rusty looked at him with a wide eye and glanced quickly over at Shea, wondering who the guy was. He looked like trouble though. His suspicions were quickly answered though, when he demanded Rusty dropped the case. Rusty, looked down for a moment, and then saw the guy’s arm move and then the words ‘you’re dead.’ Those words he’d heard from raiders before. Instantly, Rusty dropped the briefcase, and quickly placed his freehand on the barrel of the assault rifle. For the first time he didn’t hesitate, suddenly let out a short volley of bullets into the guy’s chest, the loud bullets echoing through the corridor. When he was done shooting Rusty’s chest heaved heavily. He watched the man with a look of surprise. “He…” was about all Rusty could mutter, before looking over at Shea. She’d… hesitated…?
He looked her over confused. “Uh. Are you alright Shea?” Having recovered some after noticing Shea hadn’t fired. He looked concerned for her. If he was truly honest, this girl was giving him mixed signals. She didn’t hesitate to kill the other guy… so what made this guy different? Maybe it was his fault and the reaction he had to her killing the guy? He shook his head a bit. “We, should move, get out of here.” He said quickly, reaching down to grab up the case.

The Hubner Hotel, D.C. Ruins He looked her over confused. “Uh. Are you alright Shea?” "Yeah." Shea said, giving him the slightest of nods. For an instant, he may have caught her what was a devious grin before she looked into the lobby. He was perceptive. She was, admittedly, impressed. He shook his head a bit. “We, should move, get out of here.” He said quickly, reaching down to grab up the case. The vagabond nodded once again, checking the body for loot before entering the lobby. Long shadows had already began to creep across the dirty floor and a growing sense of urgency filled her. How long did it take us to clear the hotel? As they swept through the open room and navigated the filthy mounds of rotting chairs, Shea did not allow her weapon to drop until they neared the entrance to the Hotel. It was here they paused, and after scanning the parking lot through the broken door frames, Shea slung her rifle over her back once again. "Few hours of daylight left. We can make tha skirts by dusk if we move steady up that road." the woman said, pointing it out with her index finger. The road was, of course, Allen Avenue. "We camp anywhere near here, muties will find us." she then added while searching her bag. Shea didn't elaborate on why the two men had been in the area. Shea lit a cigarette while offering a bottle of Aqua Pura to Rusty. Adjusting her boots and the straps of her gear, the young woman prepared herself for a run. "You'll be glad yah drank it when we're moving." Running had been part of Shea's life since she had been a teen. The woman was excellent at fleeing when the need arose. She wondered how light Rusty was on his feet. "Tighten your gear up. I've got an extra belt if yah need. It make sprinting easier, trust me." The idea that they would need to sprint existed in her gut. Being a realist, Shea accepted that travel through the ruins faster than a crawl was likely to draw the attention of someone or something. Allen Avenue, D.C. Ruins For roughly the first hour, Shea and Rusty's travel went smoothly. The vagabond had been fearful of running into more muties, especially when they had first passed the corpses of their yellow-pale victims. Luckily, no such encounters took place. They kept to the sidewalks, passing through alleys to get around open obstructions, and always returning to Allen Avenue. It was not only the quickest way to reach the edge of the metro region, but Shea feared betting lost is she ventured too far from this road. The young woman had never explored this area of D.C. much, and with good reason. The young man, although loaded with gear, stayed with Shea. Eventually the woman slowed her pace a bit for his sake. They saw no other creatures besides ravens and a few radroaches. As her boots tread steadily down cracked and broken sidewalks, Shea suddenly slowed and the stopped completely. In the distance a cluster of ruins formed a bottleneck. "There's a fire up ahead. Wasn't burning this mornin' when I came through." the woman said quietly, nodding in the direction of the pass. After a moment of silence and scratching her elbow, the vagabond had come to another conclusion. "I hear something... but my ears a shit from shootin'." She began walking quietly with Rusty towards the concrete barrier, head tilted in a futile attempt to aid her own hearing. The breeze made it difficult to hear as well, coming in chaotic gusts of dust. "I ain't quite tall enough.... here, take this rifle." Shea said, offering the DKS to Rusty with a hint of reluctance. "Just peek over the top of that barrier an' use the scope. See what's going on over there. I'll watch our backs."

He’d given her a raised eyebrow after noticing the grin. What in the world did she have a grin like that on her face for? Shaking his head a bit, he followed her into the lobby, and looked around. Everything seemed to look as it did when they’d left it. With a look back to the man he killed, he breathed a heavy sigh. Rusty knew he had to kill him, not that he wanted to… but it was necessary. There were no changing things now though, and he’d have to get used to it… Maybe drown his sorrows once they found a bar. Something of that sort. He didn’t smoke, but he did drink every once in a while.
It really was time to move though, so he followed Shea over to the door and followed her gaze to the road ahead. “Alright…” he nodded. He then looked down as she pulled out water for him. He was almost taken aback from her generosity. He gave her a look of thanks, before slowly taking it from her hands. She was smoking again; he wondered what it was like… cigarettes had always been too valuable to smoke away in his eyes. He always saved them to sell in town. Maybe they really were that addictive. Quickly taking off the lid of the water he took a small drink from it, and then wiped the top with his jacket before replacing the cap and handing it back to her. He had water and it was purified… probably not as much as that stuff though. Still he wasn’t gonna turn down her gift… maybe he’d give her some of his mirelurk cakes later. He probably would’ve anyway, but now he had more incentive.
Now she was getting ready for a run and Rusty’s eye widened. She was really serious about it. Rusty sort of nodded at her before following her lead. He placed his gear down for a moment, before bending down to tie his shoe laces and fix his belt. “Nah that’s not necessary.” Rusty said when offered a fresh belt. “Got one… usually use it to keep doors shut though.” He grinned, before reaching into his satchel and pulling out his spare. He then used it to tighten up the guns together on the satchel, making sure they couldn’t clang against each other, him or a wall as he went past. Once he was certain it was secure properly, he placed the satchel onto his shoulder, pulling it tight and then picked up the briefcase. He was ready to go after her. “Alright, let’s get a move on before we get caught out here. I think I’ve seen more than my fair share of mutants for today.” He noted, looking over to the bodies still present in the street as they past them.
Allen Avenue, D.C. Ruins
As they continued down Allen Avenue, Rusty had been looking along the rooftops for raiders, occasionally glancing lower into the upper windows of buildings to see if there was anything there. He figured rooftops would be good vantage points to spy people from or sniper them. He wasn’t about to let someone get the drop on them. He didn’t say much either as they continued along. Occassionally he’d look off to get his bearings, though he trusted Shea’s intuition. He had been wondering if he had come this way before… He doubted it. The ruins were like a maze sometimes… And without being able to read, it was dang near impossible to figure out by sign posts.
They’d kept a decent pace as they went on their journey, a little too fast for Rusty’s comfort level, but enough to keep them on track. Thankfully, Rusty was able to keep up with relatively little difficulty. They’d slowed down eventually to a more ‘Rusty’ pace eventually, though Rusty wasn’t entirely sure why. Soon enough they had stopped completely, and Rusty moved to stand next to her. He glanced over at the light in the distance. “Trouble.” He muttered, glancing back over to his companion. They couldn’t be sure, but it was more than likely. Quieter than ever, Rusty followed her movements and then they concealed themselves behind a concrete barrier. When crouched next to her, Rusty put the briefcase between them, thankful for the relief of the weight of the thing, before slowly taking a hold of her sniper rifle. “Uh okay… I’ll try.” He affirmed giving her a quick nod.
Slowly Rusty stood up, carefully not to get too open over it, before gently resting the rifle on the concrete block. He then leaned in and looked down the scope. “…. Ah dammit. I guess I didn’t get my wish…” scowling, he looked over to her. “I’m counting four mutants and a few of their uh… more mutant friends.” He didn’t sound sure. In fact, he sounded unsure and nervous. Before him stood a newly constructed, albeit half-assed and make-shift Mutant camp. Clearly they had chosen the area well, given the fact that it would make a great trap. “There could be more of them… I can’t tell…” he stopped looking soon after and gently handed her gun back to her. “We’re gonna have to go around, no way we can deal with all those assholes… any ideas?”

Allen Avenue, D.C. Ruins
Shea accepted her rifle back, swinging it over her shoulder by the worn leather strap. She took a moment to study the sky above them. Without being able to cross the ruins before them, access to the north-western side of Allen Avenue had become impossible. The only alternative route she knew of was likely just as dangerous, but it was better than running headlong into a mutant nest. She supposed her and Rusty might get two more hours of daylight if they were lucky, and that was simply not enough.
"I know ah route that would lead us to the river." the woman said quietly, obviously having fallen deep into thought. Shea wished her navigating skills were as well-honed as she had implied earlier. More dust flew through the street as an evening breeze found the pair of wastelanders.
"Would take us just south of Rivet City, but it's gonna be a day-or-so's travel." the vagabond said distantly. Shea didn't mention that it would lead them through a section of the treacherous D.C. metro tunnels as well. The young woman made a quiet click of her tongue, dismissing the thoughts. Producing the water bottle once again, Shea took a few long swills before handing it to Rusty. When they had both consumed their fill, she placed it back in her pack and checked her boots straps.
"Tha farther away we are at dusk, the better. You ready?"
Somewhere, D.C. Ruins
They had made good time, covering a few miles of twisting paths and collapse ruins that effectively transformer D.C. into a maze. The sun was no longer visible to them, blocked by the tallest of remaining buildings near the largest ruins. Shea had quickened their pace, fully aware of their dwindling time limit. Their movements became less stealthy and eventually turned to a slow jog down winding streets.
A rotting billboard miraculously still bared the image of a Nuka-Cola bottle, only it had been reduced to a outline of the item. Shea glanced at it and subliminally became thirsty. Centuries after the billboard's construction, it continued to fulfill it's purpose.
For Shea, the billboard had been a landmark. Take a left in the next alley, right at the wide road, metro station is four hour walk from there. Shea thought to herself as the continued to move. Shadow covered everything now, minutes before sunset. This region was seldom seen by any humans, and it showed in the presence of storefronts still displaying good behind their broken windows and quarter-mile wide crater up the road. Shea assumed it to be radioactive, as were most craters in D.C.
"There's a factory about ten minutes from here. We can hold up there till dawn." Shea said as they turned the corner. Suddenly she stopped, raising her rifle and searching the alley. It was empty of life. Before them was a corpse, torn apart and mostly eaten.
The former slave and the young survivalist occupied the entrance to the alley. In the dim light, dried blood covered the broken concrete and mounds of debris. Shea led them in, stowing her rifle and producing the revolver. Her mind darted to a bottle of Cateye in her pouch, but the young woman resisted. Better so save the stuff. It came in handy on many jobs for Shea, but she hoped the wouldn't be on the streets much longer.
"It's maybe a day old. Still, keep an eye out." Shea said as she passed the remains, chuckling at her own words. The leather boots tread quietly across the alley and over part of a collapse structure, steadying herself with her free left hand. Shea occasionally looked back to make sure Rusty wasn't snagged on the sharp rebar, something her small frame and practice had made easily avoidable for the woman. Soon they emerged onto what Shea considered the wide road. The street had once been a bustling five-lane boulevard. It, like most practical endeavors, had been declared obsolete by the bombs.
"Muties pass through here." Shea said matter-of-factly, nodding towards the broken stretch of pavement. As usual, she didn't elaborate. "Factory is over there. C'mon."
The doors to the factory had been unlocked. It wasn't a surprising thing in the Wasteland. Most denizens of the Old World had died within minutes of the bombs. It had once been a rubber factory, making door and window seals for such automobiles as the Highwayman and the Corvega. Now it only made rust and dust. They waited for a few minutes, until the woman felt certain the bay area was vacant. Dust floated in the darkness, disturbed by the the factory's doors having been opened.
Shea then produced a coveted treasure, rustling through her pack in the near dark facility. She produced a faintly glowing object in her free hand, holding it like a club. Shaking the object wildly and turning to Rusty, the pair was bathed in the a blue light. It wasn't comparable to a torch, but the Quantum illuminated their surrounds enough to navigate.
"Looks like there's a office up the steps there. Might get lucky and find a couch..." Shea said, motioning for Rusty to take the lead. "...don't drop the bottle." she added, handing it to him slowly.
