Ariane Berne was born in Wayrest, High Rock, to unknown parents. Much of her life was spent in an orphanage, where she had always known as home. It was not until she turned fifteen, that she ran away, interested in what the world had to offer. Living as a homeless teen, much of her income and food was obtained by begging, or later thievery. She did not stay in Wayrest for long, as she ventured through High Rock, traveling the roads between cities with caravans, or occasionally alone. This was when she had seen her first taste of magic, during a stay in a roadside tavern, two traveling Magicians had performed tricks and spells, illuminating and darkening the room, creating illusions and even predicting information and hypnotising audiences.
The Orphan's timidity had gotten the best of her, and the two performing mages had departed before properly inquiring on the magic. The rest of the audience that she interrogated for information had bits and pieces of knowledge, enough to convince her that it was not trickery, but a true skill, or maybe even science. One of the primary bits of information came from the Tavern's owner who, alongside cooking and brewing, took up a small interest in alchemy. This provided Ariane an opportunity to research something that seemed at least slightly related to the performers, as well as a temporary place to stay. In exchange for working in the tavern, Ariane was given a boarding in the upstairs, and the occasional lesson in alchemy.
When she felt that she had learned as much as she could from the tavern owner, she departed, in search of something more directly related to magicks. She continued her investigation into magic until one incident had caused her trouble with a local watch. Her theft of a spellbook from a local merchant had caused her notoriety. The city that this happened in was Jehaana, a border town of the neighboring province, Skyrim. Ariane took this as an opportunity to cross the border and make her way to Solitude, where she hoped to venture one day to the College of Winterhold.
