Personality: To say that Elric is an eccentric is to say the least. The guy is a crazy adrenaline junkie, to put it simply. He’s always been one to charge into a base head on and blow things up. He’s a team player, though he strives to get the job done and carry out all his tasks… only his chosen task is to enter the danger first, assess the situation and make preparations for an attack. He lives for danger, and gets excited for it, and while he seems a little unhinged at times, he’s proven himself time and time again that he can be relied upon. Nothing is too dangerous for him, no matter the odds, and he’ll never admit defeat before he’s even tried. Sometimes his enthusiasm gets him into trouble and people have said that it’ll lead to his death one day. In Elric’s eyes that’s all part of the fun. Needless to say his thoughts, opinions and actions have led people to question his sanity and he’s been tested before… numerous times. Whilst the tests do come back negative, his medical file does recommend observation.
On a more personal basis Elric is a guy that likes fun. He’s a bit of a party animal, and his favourite past times include rock climbing, snorkelling and various other forms of adventurous hobbies. He’ll encourage people to join him when/if he gets free time off, not wanting anyone to feel left out. He can seem a little intense sometimes, which is why romantically speaking, he’s a failure. His intensity did lead to the breakup of his marriage to his former husband. His tendency to get into crazy situations was also a factor, which caused all sorts of distress to his loved ones. As such, Elric’s had relatively few relationships, but when he gets into one, it’s not a whirlwind romance; it’s a god damn hurricane.
Elric was born on the 20th September, 2628 to a retired marine and a nurse nine months after the two settled on the planet, following his father’s retirement. It was clear almost immediately that the boy was always going to be physically active as soon as he was able to drag his butt around on the floor. Soon enough he was climbing up onto things with no real sense of fear or danger. His father, much pleased with his active son, would often spend time with the boy in local parks and in fields. There they would play catch, or just explore climbing up trees, or down into brooks. Often they went camping and slept under the stars. His father taught him many of the skills he learned as a marine, when Elric was a youngster. As expected, those skills would serve him much in his later life.
As Elric grew up, he became more and more active, participating in various clubs in his community. He made sure to make use of his father’s equipment whenever he could. All in all his childhood was great. As far as Elric was concerned, he had a good childhood, even if he didn’t have too many friends. Whilst some kids did enjoy physical activities every now and then, they didn’t necessarily want to do it all the time. Elric realised this was one of the first examples of his intensity getting the better of him later in life, even if he didn’t necessarily understood why. His father blatantly encouraged this sort of domineering personality trait in his boy, hoping that Elric would eventually become a marine like him. Maybe he would even outrank him some day. If Elric’s father was honest he lived for that day, the pride he had for his son knew no bounds. Elric’s mother on the hand always seemed isolated from her son. Whilst she was an active woman, she had always wanted Elric to pay a little more attention to his studies. Secretly she had always been a little jealous. She’d never really bonded with the boy, though she loved him dearly. She was still proud of him regardless, even if they shared virtually nothing in common.
Years went by and Elric grew older. He was joined by a little sister named Lily at the age of fourteen, whom Elric adored more than anything else in the world. As she grew older Elric got more and more protective of her. So when he saw news about a Promethean attack, which had become something of a common thing since he was seven, he decided to join the marines when he was old enough. After speaking with his father about it, the man nodded and began training the boy on how to use a gun. His father figured the boy would get a head start, if he himself trained him beforehand.
By the age of eighteen, Elric was ready to enlist and on his birthday that’s what he did. Before too long, Elric was packed and leaving home. More importantly he was leaving his little sister alone, a fact which Elric believes she still hasn’t forgiven him for. For the greater good however, he marched into training and joined the UNSC as a marine. Despite having been trained by his father for the past couple of years, Elric still had to adjust quite dramatically to his new life. The training had seemingly changed in the years since his father had been a recruit. On top of that, it seemed his father had been going easy on him. Life was tough, and rightly so, though there was a whole new life that Elric never had witnessed before. Recruits would often go out on the town on their time off and as such Elric learned how to party. Elric certainly liked to party, a fact that made him somewhat infamous amongst the other recruits. Over the months of basic training, Elric would gain a reputation of being a bit of a dog. His attention of both women and men could only be described as flighty, here one moment, gone the next. It wasn’t until Elric met Giddy that everything changed.
Giddy changed everything for Elric as the two instantly clicked when at a party. Their relationship progressed quickly and soon enough they were courting. The other recruits in Elric’s unit were in such disbelief after seeing Elric become something of a floozy that they had a betting pool to see how long it’d last. Much to their surprise it lasted longer than any of them expected. Within six months, the two were married. If either of them had been honest, it should’ve been clear that the two married too quickly. However at the time the two were incredibly in love and neither of them saw what was coming. They had been married for about two years whilst they trained in their chosen MOS, with Giddy becoming a field mechanic, and Elric an infiltrator. Whilst Giddy’s career progressed as expected, Elric’s skill and talent put him ahead of his peers. It also appeared that his superior officers had taken notice, like they did some of the others from his unit and put his name down on potential candidates to join the ODSTs.
As Elric had just been about to move on from training in the marines to a more complex role, he was approached by the UNSC and offered a position with the ODSTs. Delighted with the opportunity and incredibly excited about what he would get up to in that role, Elric immediately agreed. Unfortunately, he neglected to inform Giddy, who got incredibly angry when Elric informed him of the decision. They argued for days about what it would mean for their relationship and the chaos it would bring. Ultimately, Giddy submitted and Elric moved on from the marines and joined the ODSTs.
Several months of training followed his voluntary application as well as two layers of screening, then came the ‘actual training. Once it was done however, Elric was a proper ODST and joined the ranks. His first assignment was aboard the UNSC Hippolytus, a Washington-Class carrier. He was just in time for war to break out as in 2648 after a bombing ruined peace talks between the UNSC and the Covenant.
Elric’s first ever outing as an ODST in a genuine engagement was an assault on the ice planet of Galios. It was here that Elric would gain his call sign “snowflake”.
Galios had been occupied by the Covenant was a listening post to determine the locations of the UNSC fleets and as such it either needed to be occupied or destroyed. So the Hippolytus was sent in along with a few other vessels to secure the planet. All went as normal for a fight in space. The ODST teams prepared as the battle waged war around them, Elric too made sure to get ready quickly. He impatiently waited once he was next to his pod as the briefing was given to them. Elric would be fired down closer than the others so he could immediately get inside and take out any mechanised forces, whilst the others assaulted from two sides. It sounded simple enough, all things considered.
Once inside his pod, Elric prepared to drop and that’s when things went wrong. Something hit the Hippolytus and suddenly Elric was launched higher up and inaccurately than anyone should’ve. Back on the ship, people assumed Elric had been lost as a result of the explosion and as such shifted their plans to omit him from them. Without an infiltrator they had to rely on their skills as shooters completely. Little did anyone know Elric was still alive. As the other pods dropped, he flew through the atmosphere. It was then he realised where he was going to land. A mountain overlooked the Covenant base and that’s where he was going to land. Right on the peak, several miles from where he needed to be. With a heavy thud the new trooper landed. All he could do was watch the others land near the base as he climbed out. He soon got furious when he witnessed the firefight begin. Knowing that he would miss the fighting had he have stayed there he decided to move. On foot, he knew that he’d never make it, but once he noticed the shape of the drop pod door, a smirk grew on his face.
Suddenly, Elric was laid down on inner concave of the door and sliding down the mountain faster than he really should’ve been going. With his submachinegun in hand, all he could do was lean left and right to steer properly. As he got about half way down the mountain, Elric grabbed his detonator and pressed the button. Suddenly his drop pod exploded above. The shockwave, though small was enough to shift some of the snow and before anyone knew it the entire mountain was coming down on the Covenant base. By this point, many of the other ODSTs had noticed this by now, as well as the Covenant soldiers. Seeing the avalanche that was barrelling down towards them, began to panic. Those that fled the base were mopped up by the ODSTs, leaving only the Brutes remaining within the base itself. Engaging in a firefight with the ODSTs the Brutes didn’t notice as Elric came sliding into the compound on the makeshift sledge. He lay there, aimed up and fired at them as he passed through. He started screaming loudly as he looked back and saw the snow right behind him.
Within seconds both he and the covenant base were swallowed up by the snow which came to a half just in front of the ODSTs. Stunned into silence and temporary inaction, the group immediately started to dig for Elric. When they found him dazed underneath the snow, one of his compatriots extended a hand to him and joked “On your feet, Snowflake, you’ve still got work to do.” From that moment on, that’s what anyone called him. It’s stuck with him ever since.
Unfortunately for Elric the story of his actions on Galios found their way to Giddy, who immediately decided enough was enough. Unable to handle an accidental drop, something that the ODSTs were pretty infamous for, and the realities of warfare, caused a rift between the married men. Giddy pulled out of the military and after a long angry argument between the two, the couple split. The divorce was quick and though painful, probably worked out for the better.
Elric ultimately returned to duty, following his divorce. Having seen plenty of action since, Elric found himself being transferred from the Hippolytus, after resources were shifted elsewhere. Now part of Kraken team, Elric looks to settle amongst a new team with a fresh start…
