He is no fool however, his position as a Storm Commando officer did not come to him because he was a rich boy, it came to him because he possessed a cunning and ability to do what needed to be done that impressed his superiors. He is a polite and courteous individual, who has had few personal liaisons during his service with the Empire.
Beneath that however, at his core, he is a soldier. He is close to his fire-team, and he see's them as the closest thing he has to family, and is actually quite protective of them.
That does not mean he would not sacrifice them if the need was great.
History
[/b][/quote]
The man who became a Storm Commando in the Imperial military was once a child too, a child of the name 'Dev Tanners'. He was born on Coruscant, to parents who worked in the Imperial diplomatic service. His life consisted mostly of attending boring functions as something cute for his parents to parade around, or being babysat at home in their rather nice apartment. He had few friends growing up, and none outside of the 'sphere' of the Imperial forces. What he did have, was an idol. His Uncle Zepen was an officer in the Imperial Stormtrooper Corps, and would often regale the young boy with stories of life as a servant of the Empire. To an impressionable youth with little in the way of parental role models, the dashing officer who brought him gifts was a hero. Even though at the time, the Rebel Alliance was winning the war, Dev ignored the defeatism that plagued his parents. The seven year old child could not comprehend someone like his uncle losing to the baddies.
That was until the Ackbar campaign reached its main target, Coruscant. The fighting was brutal, and Dev's family was evacuated alongside other Imperial officials. Dev watched the skylines of his home burning as the shuttle lifted off the surface of the planet, and felt the first sparks of hatred towards the Rebellion in his life.
The hate was solidified when a few months later, on his eighth birthday, it was confirmed that his uncle had been killed in action during the battle of Coruscant.
The news devastated a young Dev, and he became withdrawn from his parents. He spent most of the next four years to himself, exercising, and learning. The first glints of the man he would become were showing by the time he was fourteen. A tall, fit, and loyal servant of the Empire. He was pegged for military service then and there. Sure enough, his parents enrolled him in the Imperial military cadets on Bastion, the planet they had relocated to after the fall of Coruscant. The young Dev flourished as an army cadet, absorbing the lessons of life as an Imperial soldier, and embracing them. He began impressing his instructors with his ruthlessness, dedication, and cut-throat attitude, all learned from them. He isolated his peers however for these same reasons, making few friends. The excessive use of his bragging rights didn't help, and it was to no ones surprise when during one of his examinations, fellow classmates took their revenge and sabotaged him. Though the incident has since gone off the record, it was believed to involve paint and his uniform, and ended with him looking a fool in front of the instructors and being disciplined.
The incident effected his scoring greatly, but also taught him a valuable lesson. Despite the Empires 'strongest survive' motto, no one could survive alone. It was at that point that he began cultivating the friendship of one of his fellow army cadets, a man who would later become a pseudo-brother for him. Rolim Vance. A big boned cadet who had been part of the plot to trick him, he was the son of an Imperial Stormtrooper on the local garrison. Lower class than Dev's family as a result, but nonetheless, the two boys began to hit it off. They worked together, as ruthless as they had been as individuals, eventually clawing their way to the top after overcoming numerous obstacles, and numerous injuries as a result of their over zealousness on the training field.
When the time came however, the two had to part ways. After the Cadets, Dev continued his military education on the Empire's new temporary academy that had been established with the liberation of Carida by the Republic. Rolim, for his part, went directly into the Stormtrooper Corps after his time as an army Cadet, passing the necessary requirements.
Cadet Dev Tanners spent the next four years of his life undergoing some of the most rigorous training in the galaxy. He was drilled by some of the finest instructors in the Imperial military, alongside thousands of others just like him. His daily curriculum for the first two years consisted of the grueling Stormtrooper Corps, having been selected for the program. He learned to fight with his hands, with a blaster rifle, and with a knife in ways that made his four years with the Army Cadets seem like some sort of kiddies club. He also received training fitting for a Cadet of the New Imperial Academy, learning how to fence with a vibro blade, a skill that was for some odd reason considered a necessity, and more importantly- how to lead and command men.
His attitude, self-sufficiency, and cunning observations ensured him a spot in Scout Trooper training, and he spent the last two years of his training in the Imperial Academy learning how to use and maintain the gear of the Scout Troopers, and also how to perform advanced reconnaissance missions, and the tasks that Scout Troopers were expected to perform. He showed very little skill with a long range 'sniper' blaster rifle, but was a cunning observer and quick with his side arm, as well as being able to handle his bike with efficiency and care.
Dev graduated in 20 ABY, when he was twenty-two years old. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Stormtrooper Corps, and assigned command of a Scout Trooper platoon on the planet of Dantooine. The world had little in the way of action for it, but it had a sizable Imperial garrison on it due to its proximity to the capital of Bastion. The platoon was attached to a company of Stormtroopers, who were acting in tandem with an Imperial army battalion. He arrived on the world, and was greeted by his second in command and a few other scout troopers, and was escorted to the commander of the Stormtrooper Company. Their meeting was brief and polite, the Captain clearly just wanting to get the measure of the new commander of his Scout Platoon, and they then went about their businesses. Of course, this 'temporary truce' as it would later be jokingly called by members of the Scout Platoon, lasted about as long as it took the Lieutenant to get to the speeder bikes.
Scout Troopers had a reputation to uphold after all, for being some of the most intolerable people in the Imperial armed forces. The scouts would ride their bikes around, late in the night with the engines roaring to wake up the sleeping troopers, causing quite a bit of resentment from their comrades. Ontop of this, the Scout Troopers ate at separate tables in the messhall, isolating the regular Stormtroopers. Though Lieutenant Tanners, as he was now called, officially admonished them, on the side he couldn't help but grin at the antics his men were causing. All in all, despite their..annoying, behavior, Dev's platoon was a tight knit group which slowly opened up to their Lieutenant. Garrison duty on Dantooine mostly consisted of the Scouts patrolling the wide fields of the planet, and there were days where Dev and three other Scouts would just be roaming the plains by themselves, the wind whipping at the armor.
It was around this time that two things happened to Dev. The first was that Dev gained a keen appreciation for the environment, taking every opportunity he had to learn more about their surroundings (much to the exasperation of his men). The second was that he was reunited with his old friend, Rolim Vance, a Scout Trooper Corporal at this point. The two men had a rather happy re-union, though they maintained their professionalism on duty, off duty the two were known to shoot the bantha together and talk about old times in the Cadets.
The idealistic duty only left Dev with one frustration. The lack of combat. He was forced to continue training and drilling his men to keep them at peak efficiency, but there was no combat. Of course, the Scouts (and regulars) tried to make up for this with some old fashioned simulated combat ops, but it wasn't the same, and the boredom threatened to cause issues more so than any inter corps rivalry between the Stormtroopers and the Scout Troopers. The Stormtrooper barracks and the regular army's garrison had to be separated, so the Stormtrooper Company and their Scout Platoon were put in place to garrison Dantooines holo-array.
It was around this time that the galaxy's history would change forever, and with it, Lieutenant Dev Tanners story.
On live holonet, infront of all the men of the base, Warlord Varks executed the Moffs that had been 'holding the Empire back'. The entire base was transfixed on the holo, listening to Varks' words. The sides were drawn the minute he ceased speaking, and within minutes the base was consumed in a firefight as the Stormtroopers and Scout Troopers who had fallen in line with Varks fought against a single squad sized group that had not. Leading these Varks-men, was Lieutenant Dev Tanners. His counterpart, the Captain of the Stormtrooper company, had called Varks a mad man and attempted to establish contact with the regular army Major to see what was going on.
The firefight that broke out lasted for an hour, as the squad of loyalists defended their Captain to the last breath, taking with them three Stormtroopers or Scout Troopers each. But finally, Dev's men broke through. The Captain was dragged out by two Scout Troopers, and brought before Lieutenant Dev Tanners. Their dialogue was well remembered by the men who were there.
"What are you doing Lieutenant? You're joining up with a madman. He just destroyed the chain of command, usurped a throne for his own purpose! We have but one Emperor-"
"And now, Captain. We have a new one." The Captain was promptly executed by Dev's own hand, once again displaying the ruthlessness that had been trained into him.
The next few weeks were a bloody campaign between Varks-men and the Moffs loyalists, that lasted until every last vestige of resistance against Warlord Varks was stamped out. It was during this brief 'Imperial-Civil War' that Dev saw the combat he had long craved, and he was not disappointed. He fought in several key battles of the Civil War, before Varks was finally proclaimed Warlord of the Imperial Remnants. Dev was initially uncomfortable with the amount of life he had lost among his own men, but slowly grew to accept it. He himself suffered for a time, having been wounded by a loyalist blaster bolt on Jaema.
After two years of further service in the name of Warlord Varks, Dev was picked out for a...prestigious opportunity. One he could not refuse. His loyalty to Varks, and his ruthlessness in persecuting the enemies of the Empire had not gone unnoticed. When people approached him with the offer to become a part of an advanced force, dedicated to hunting down and destroying the enemies of the Empire wherever they may be, Dev practically jumped on it. It would later turn out, that this advanced force were the Storm Commandos. He went through several months of training alongside his longtime companion, Rolim Vance. It was training unlike any they had ever suffered through before. There was not a single night that Dev went to sleep without being worn to the bone. He was beaten, he was drenched. He learned how to act in hostile environments on his own. He learned how to commit acts that could be counted as terrorism, similar to what the rebellion had done to the Empire in the days of the Alliance. But he persevered, emerging as something more than just a soldier of the Empire. He emerged a killer, a tool. A dagger to be used to plunge into the Republics lung.
He was assigned a squad, with a veteran Storm Commando who had even fought during the height of the Empire against the Rebel Alliance as his second in command. The other mans name was Kaul, and he became a constant source of advice for his younger commanding officer. Their first mission was to hunt down and kill the family of one of the many Imperial deserters who had abandoned Varks. They ruined a persons life without even batting an eyelash.
As their operations increased in danger and number, so too did the skill. Tragedy struck on their seventh mission, when their operation was compromised. What caused this is a mystery to this day, but it cost Dev another week in a bacta tank from his life, and another member of his team their life.
By 25 ABY, Specialist Einne Frey had taken the place of their fallen team member, and their team was sent onto the planet of Dac to observe an increase in Republic operations in the area. In particular, they were covertly inserted to the island of Hakawa. They spent months observing the training activities of the various groups on planet, before noting something new. The arrival of a modified Corellian corvette, transformed into a carrier. They did a bit more digging, observing the comings and goings of the crew. Einne even infiltrated the Republic base at one point, finally learning for sure why it was there. And oh what they learned...
The Republic was establishing a new special operations star fighter squadron of X-Wing pilots ('How original, when do you think they'll upgrade to those E-Wings we've heard about?' Rolim had commented at the time) to fight as an independent force in long range missions, far from Republic Command. Furthermore, the ship, the Alderaanian Wraith, was receiving a batch of replacements soon.
Their superiors were contacted, and soon, the team had everything they needed to know. When the Alderaanian Wraith and Maverick left the planet of Dac, four individuals came with them, leaving behind four others in the sand of Hakawa.
