Personality: As should be expected of a devout supporter of Elder Owyn Lyons and his short-served daughter, Daniel is an honourable and loyal man, keying those two traits as key to his person. Daniel is generally a good man, one who is willing to do what is right when the need arises no matter what gets in his way, and tends to have little issue with following through what he deems to be an honourable act. He is always willing to consider the input of his kin and of those he holds in high enough regard, but more often than not he will continue through with his own personal reading, even if he has noted on multiple occasions to regret his choices in the past, those he had at the time deemed honourable or justified. He always attempts to think things through now, but he is never sure of how they can go through.
Daniel is known to stand by anyone that garners his trust and earns his support, and Daniel does his best to live up to this reputation. He served with Brotherhood for three decades before it began to drift from his beliefs, and now serves the Lyons Sympathisers happily, content in the knowledge that he is dwelling with those who he can trust and enforce his friendship onto. In wake of these attributes though, it is easy to witness his harsh and blunt attitude, often not considering the emotions of those he is speaking to or dealing with. His to-the-point demeanour has caused him more trouble than he'd like to admit, and even if he attempts to amend it with new kindnesses, he will never truly outgrow his old manners.
In spite of his own altruism, his love and care for his friends and those he cares for, or perhaps because of it all, Daniel is often (if not always) overcome with an immense guilt. He often relates the actions of the Brotherhood of Steel with himself, believing he should have exerted more effort to put a stop to their cruel and tyrannical actions. He still carries the weight of the many he knows have died because of the Brotherhood on his shoulders these days, and most times it's hard not to see it in his physicality, walking with heavy steps and gazing often at nothing. Daniel finds it hard most days to move on, remembering his shortcomings.
Born in 2248 in the Lost Hills Bunker in California, Daniel Terhan was a scribes child, but one who had no intentions to follow in the footsteps of his parents. Most of his first ten years were spent on the Second Level of the bunker, studying in the classroom the machinations of combat stratagems, the knowledge of weaponry and the Brotherhood, as well as its foes both past and present. Though he was an official member of squire classes, he would spent the majority of his time off in the training chamber on the First Level of Lost Hills, combatting other up and coming squires and initiates and competing in rifle competitions, where he quickly made a name for himself. At the age of nineteen he was inducted into the Knight caste, and promoted to an Apprentice Knight. Outfitted with Brotherhood combat armour and his own AK-112 assault rifle, Daniel joined the ranks of his brothers fighting a bloody war against the New California Republic.
In his time fighting alongside his brothers and against the NCR in the field, Daniel learned more about himself and the world than he ever could have been taught within a bunker. Forced to combat raider groups that patrolled too close to camps, and in some cases even to scout out and exterminate raider locations within areas intended to be controlled by the Brotherhood. These missions fighting the NCR and raiders would make Daniel very aware of the survivalist nature that people had to cling to outside of the bunker, and it was only emphasised when Daniel had to take part in patrols against preexisting settlements. Before long Daniel grew very disenchanted with the mentality of the Brotherhood of Steel, personally offended and disgusted by the treatment that the average waster received. He constantly spoke out against the Lost Hills Elders, and before long it was clear he needed to be removed, just as all troublesome knights, paladins and scribes were. At the age of twenty-four, after his promotion to a Journeyman Knight, Daniel would be selected to join the party that would escort the young Arthur Maxson to The Citadel on the East Coast, the home of Elder Owyn Lyons.
The large slavers force east of California, calling itself The Legion, had prompted the Brotherhood of Steel to employ the use of a vertibird on this journey. Carrying them from California to the former District of Columbia, the expedition with Arthur Maxson would spend near a year travelling, only arriving in The Citadel in 2273. At the age of twenty-five, Daniel Terhan joined the East Coast Brotherhood of Steel under the guide of Elder Owyn Lyons, along with many others among the party that had escorted Squire Maxson east. A small sum joined the 'Brotherhood Outcasts' who found the methodology of Elder Owyn Lyons to be an abuse of power, and an act of treason against everything the Brotherhood of Steel stands for. That was precisely why Daniel liked the Citadel based branch so much.
Daniel, along with those who had come with him, were quick to receive new incorporation into the East Coast branch. First they were each appointed the rank of Knight-Captain, giving them a degree of midway authority within Lyons Brotherhood. Then, each were given a suit of T45d Power Armour, which had become the standard of the small yet technologically gifted chapter. Within a week of his arrival, Daniel was deployed in the White House Plaza, amidst the ruins of the city of Washington. Combatting Vault 87 Super Mutants, Talon Company mercenaries, and drug addled raiders proved easy enough, even if the sheer quantity of mutants within the ruins was baffling to Daniel. These service of those in defence of the old ruins never went unnoticed though, and before long the Brotherhood would send reinforcements and defensive materials, to ensure a long-standing presence in the region.
Over the years, Daniel would prove an asset to the Brotherhood of Steel on multiple occasions. From firefights against mutants in Pennsylvania Avenue to full-blown engagements between mutants and mercs in the Mall, Daniel has managed to get by on the best of his abilities, surviving every fight he's been in with few to no scratches, and proving himself as a more than adequate soldier, at least in some cases. By 2277, Daniel was promoted to Paladin, and transferred upon request to the Washington Monument, to safeguard the Galaxy News Radio satellite relay. When it was damaged by Super Mutants, he decided to resign himself to simply patrols through the Mall. Word would always reach the battalion he was deployed with of the goings on in the Wasteland, ranging from weird tales of far-northern fights between super heroes, to crazed requests from Nuka Cola addicts in the west, and even of strangers that wandered through and just seemed to save the day all the time. It seemed stories of the 'Boy from 101' were coming in the perfect time, too.
Daniel heard over GNR, during his work in the Mall, of the goings on with the Jefferson Memorial. Attempts were being made by wastelanders to pretty much save the entire Capital Wasteland, with the help of scientists from a settlement to the south known as Rivet City, and the vault wanderer. Initially Daniel was very excited to bare witness to a massive change in the political layout and survivalism of the Capital Wasteland; if the Brotherhood backed this motion, it would assure the trust of the people, and prove a perfect tool for growth. Within less than a week of the projects rebirth however, bad news spread through the Wasteland, of a new and terrible group that had come in, usurped control of the Memorial, and set up base.
Despite what would come to be essentially a war waged by the Brotherhood against this remnant of the west, the Enclave, Daniel came to experience very little combat against them within the first few months of conflict. Left within the Mall, his first match against the invading enemy would be on the steps of the Capitol Building, wherein himself and a small handful of Knights would be caught mid-patrol by an incoming vertibird. The firefight that followed, between Enclave, Brotherhood, mutants and Talon Company, proved to be one of the most hectic combat experiences in Daniel's life. In the end he and an even smaller handful of knights gained the chance to examine the Enclave, including their plasma-based weapons, bizarre power armour, and general rank formation; four soldiers had been deployed in powered armour, while an officer in little more than a suit had been deployed with them. It was in this moment that Daniel would take a souvenir, one that would become his mainstay sidearm for years to come.
Before long, Daniel and many other high-ranking soldiers in the field were recalled to the Citadel for reassignment. At the time of Daniel's arrival back at the Citadel, the Brotherhood of Steel was already prepped for a full-blown assault on the Jefferson Memorial, after news had come in that the Enclave's northern base of operations, Raven Rock, had been obliterated by the lone wanderer from Vault 101. Daniel, along with many others, was positioned along the northern bank of the Potomac River, to provide long-range covering fire for the Lyon's Pride and the newly completed Liberty Prime, the soon-to-be ultimate weapon of the Brotherhood of Steel. In this time he was able to regroup with people he'd served or bonded with during his time in the Capital Wasteland, most especially Paladin Tristan and Gunny. The three of them provided expert long-range cover for the Lyon's Pride both before and after their assault on the Jefferson Memorial, and Daniel still remembers Tristan's proud gasp as the electromagnetic barrier into the memorial site was torn down by Liberty Prime, ensuring a swift and decisive victory for the Brotherhood of Steel and the Capital Wasteland.
In the weeks that followed the destructive Battle of Project Purity, Daniel was among the many Paladings, Knights, and Scribes that began to be positioned all around the Capital Wasteland. Scouting operations had begun near the SatCom arrays, Fort Bannister, and the northern portion of the D.C. ruins as far as Wheaton Armour. Daniel was, unexpectedly, not sent back into the Mall to return to his duties. Instead, like others, he was deployed within the Capital Wasteland itself to begin the hunt for any and all remaining Enclave strongholds. Though Daniel would take part in multiple operations to take out Enclave encampments, he spent a majority of his time within the squad, listening closely to the goings on of the Brotherhood-Enclave War through the voice of the people, Three Dog. It seemed the war was being won, and the Enclave had been pushed back out of the Capital Wasteland entirely, into one of their last major encampments. Soon he and other high-ranking Paladins were called back to the Citadel, where they were going to be updated on the status of the war, and their next engagements.
Inevitably, Daniel was again recalled from his previous mission, no longer positioned on a search-and-destroy operation. While the wanderer from Vault 101 and the elite within the Brotherhood of Steel operated to undermine the Enclave's operations in their military stations, many leaders within the Brotherhood had been commissioned to take out raider, mercenary, and mutant strongholds throughout the Wasteland. Due to noticeable losses in the fights with the Enclave, a number of Paladins were repositioned as combat commanders, giving a large sum of Knight-Captains authority over their counterparts. The shifted dynamic proved effective, and soon Paladins began leading squads on specific operations, with Daniel working in a platoon of Initiates, Knights, and Paladins, commanding his own squad within the unit. Their mission was to occupy the northeasterly corner of the Capital Wasteland, specifically taking point within the power stations in the area.
The journey up to their designated rendezvous point had been simple enough; a ruined city on the way had been attacked by the Brotherhood, Enclave, and the lone wanderer numerous times, weakening the foundations of the raiders inhabitants. After a brief but thorough firefight the ruins were again cleared, giving the company a safe spot to format their operation. The three Paladins in control of the platoon, Daniel included, had access to scout charts of the region north and east, locating two power stations and one power plant in area. The plan, broken down by one of the other Paladins, was to have each squad occupy a power station each. Daniel volunteered his squad to occupy the power station near the outskirts of the Capital Wasteland, giving the other two squads restitute from the long harrowing march. Soon, a veritable small army of soldiers left the ruins, and made its way north-west, towards Scrapyard and the first of their three power stations.
By the first night, the power station south of Minefield had been occupied by the first of the three squads, with three Initiates, two Knights, and a Paladin holding the location under the authority of the Brotherhood of Steel, to examine the possibility of setting up a new set of power outlets across the Capital Wasteland. Thirteen men moved on from the power station, almost directly north to close in on the power station. Many of the ghoul inhabitants had already been killed, leaving only a handful of irradiated victims and a single Mark VII automated turret for the Brotherhood to dispatch. Before the second night had even fallen, the power plant was under control of the Brotherhood of Steel. Leaving behind four Initiates, two Knights, a Mister Gutsy and a Paladin, the final and smallest squad set off from the power station, for the last stint of this operation.
When Daniel, his two Knights and his two Initiates made it to Greener Pastures disposal site, they were let down to know there was no safe spot in the area to hunker down. The office and maintenance building was filled with radiation spots, and even after clearing out the resident 'roaches and rabid dogs, Daniels squad was forced to move on into the night. In the light of dusk, one of the Initiates pointed out a distant relay tower that could act as cover for the night. Paladin Terhan led his squad towards the radio transmitter near the old Corvega factory, setting up to use the resident ruined houses as a defensive perimeter, as well as the fenced off area as a shelter for the night. While his squad slept, Daniel would spend time fiddling with the relay tower, attempting to find its broadcast origin. By the next day he was forced to abandon his search and move on, towards the power station. After a short brawl with a family of yao guai, the Brotherhood were occupying the third and final power station, setting up a series of outposts in the northeast of the Capital Wasteland, ensuring an asserted dominance over local settlements, raider gangs, and mercenary packs.
Of course, Daniel didn't last long in the station. What he'd initially expected to act almost as a personal base was quickly shifted under another mans authority, and Daniel was given an order to report to Pennsylvania Avenue, where a sizeable Brotherhood task force was being compiled. By the time Daniel had returned to his homely origin, there was already a sizeable strike force gathering in the district. With none lower than the rank of knight, Paladin Tristan and Sentinel Sarah Lyons were in authority. This strike force was intended to attack the final of the Enclave's strongholds in the form of Adams Air Force Base, sweeping through and ousting the resident Enclave soldiers while the lone wanderer infiltrated the Mobile Base Crawler. Daniel barely understood half of what he was meant to do, but before he could question he was given a tesla cannon to operate as an anti-vertibird soldier, and sent along with this army into the Presidential metro to utilise the still working subway system. When they arrived in the air force base, it was already clear that a war was waging.
The entrance courtyard that doubled as the metro exit had been locked down by Brotherhood soldiers, and the Enclave within the base were already in shambles. The massive strike force began its violent operation, fighting onto the airstrip and as far as the air force control tower. Daniel played witness to the destruction of the Base Crawler from the nearby hangars, and though he was proud to have served, he always felt like the destruction of such a vital hive of technological knowledge was a mistake on the part of the Elder and Sentinel, as well as a waste of a major weapon that had been the key to the Enclave's success against Liberty Prime. In the end he had no place to voice his grievances, and instead like many others, would end up returning to the Capital Wasteland, to continue his service under the East Coast Brotherhood. The pleasure of the victory did not last too long however, as within the year Elder Owyn Lyons would pass away, and his daughter Sarah would take his place. In that same year she was marked KIA, though many, Daniel included, found this hard to believe. Soon, chaos befell the Brotherhood.
The title of Elder swapped heads over and over again, and soon it was too much to handle. Disgruntled Knights and Initiates were the first to leave, marching out of the life of the Brotherhood, but within less than a few years Paladins would follow suite, unable to support a faction so lost in confusion and tragedy. By 2281, Paladin Daniel Terhan, a veteran of eight years within the East Coast Brotherhood, and a total of fourteen years in service, walked out of the Citadel for the final time, resigning his title and authority. Due to its links to the Brotherhood, due to its water caravans, Daniel moved in to the hulk-turned-settlement, Rivet City. He was easily able to land a job as a member of Rivet City Security, specifically among the bridge rotations. In time he grew close to the inhabitants, specifically one Vera Weatherly, with which he would have a short-lived marriage that ended on mutual terms. He enjoyed his time in Rivet City but knew for some time it would come to an end, most likely at the hands of the Brotherhood. When he heard of Arthur Maxson climbing the ladder to Elder, he knew things were going to become darker and darker within the Capital Wasteland.
Daniel experienced nearly five years of relative peace in Rivet City. Aside from the occasional Talon Company squad attempting to assault the bridge, or the rare wandering mutant, it was a calm and safe job to take part in. Due to the growth in sales of Aqua Pura, the Brotherhood were quick to funnel the income to their own needs, and in time it would prove trouble to the economy of Rivet City, but nothing was as troubling to the survival of the city as when the Brotherhood of Steel finally rolled into town, and through minor force, tore the internal reactor out of the ship, rendering it useless and inhospitable. Within the weeks following, the inhabitants of Rivet City were forced out, with half clinging to the Brotherhood and the other half were forced to trek across the Wasteland. Daniel, merely following those more connected their society, would settle with them in the ruins of Bethesda. Thanks to a large amount of rebuilding, the city became inhabitable by anyone other than raiders. By the time the city was on its feet again, Daniel would make his leave, feeling both internally unwelcome and despondent in the knowledge that it had been his old home, the Brotherhood, that had ousted those he had come to know as friends.
After wandering for some time in the northeast, Daniel would find his way to something he had not seen in over half a decade. A solitary broadcast tower to the east of the Capital Wasteland, one that had at a time been the temporary home for a small squad of Brotherhood soldiers; a transmitter tower, just to the east. Unlike last time, Daniel found the very thing he had sought out in the form of a small rubble covered basement door, just large enough for a man to enter. Inside the basement he found the remains of a small family, and a ham radio, the broadcasts source. After disposing of the bodies in burial fashion, Daniel would begin to tinker with the radio, in an attempt to hijack it and set up his own. After multiple failed attempts, Daniel cleared the tunnel of much of its debris, and began to set up a home inside it. With Canterbury Commons not too far north, he was able to secure a bedroll, and enough survival gear to get him by for as long as need be - a makeshift battery to power his floodlighting, a coffee pot and medical kit to help with boiling water and general health needs, and of course an easy connection to a major trade hub within the Capital Wasteland.
By 2289, some three years after his return to the relay station, Daniel was barely getting by. Making money as a mercenary and caravan guard for trips from Canterbury Commons to Bethesda or the Monarchy of Rosie, he has managed to scrape by as best he can, saving up money to hire a repairman to modify the radio and secure its connection to the relay, so he may be able to open up his own non-affiliated radio station. Unbeknownst to him, fate had a different plan in mind. Upon one of his returns to Canterbury Commons, he would meet a trader from the far north of the Commonwealth. With a plethora of foreign goods, there was one in particular that caught his eye; a deadly and powerful gauss rifle, and for a cheap price all things considered. Torn between hiring a repairman and this one-time chance, Daniel caved in to his desires and purchased the weapon from the trader, who would leave a note with him with a strict instruction - 'READ IN PRIVATE.'
The note, read within the secured basement, informed Daniel of groups known as the Lyons Sympathisers and Pride Outcasts. Factions capitalised by their relation to the Brotherhood when headlined by Owyn and Sarah Lyons, or by their opposition to the current Elder, Maxson, the trader had been able to figure that Daniel would relate after spotting his holotags, still worn beneath the outfit of a waster - a fitting sign of a Knight or Paladin who was struggling to abandon his past. Daniel would make multiple trips south to Canterbury Commons over the next few weeks, seeking out any underground members of this Lyons loyalist force. Before long he would meet up with a member of Lyons Sympathisers, who pointed him in the direction of both Danse's Outcasts and Lyons Sympathisers. Though not a key aspect of the factions, Daniel would return to his home in the drainage chamber, intent now more than ever to set up his relay as a beacon to any and all sympathisers.
