He prefers getting the job done with the least casualties to his crew, this has gained him the respect, and honour of his crewmembers. Some of the Sangheili respect his choices, and prefer his style. When others are the exact opposite. This has gained him the vast ship in his command.
As a person, he will listen to what others have to say, and often takes their decisions and opinions into thought. Rilarn is protective of his family, and friends, and sends funds to them both, it pays to be his friend, literally.
Rilarn's lineage was one basked in leadership, so it was strange when Rilarn wanted to pilot things, but his father had thought he may become the leader of a battleship, combining his family's wishes, and his wishes, it turns out, that his father was right.
Rilarn joined the military right out of school, and passed through most things quite easily, and was very switched on with ships, the way they worked, the way they had to be controlled, etc. He was tried a few times in a leadership position, and was quite good at it, and they groomed him to lead crews aboard ships.
On one of his command posts, he was forced into combat when a group of ONI Insurrectionists had boarded his ship, and slaughtered the crew. A SPARTAN-IV had pinned to the wall, and tried to slit his throat, but his arm got in the way, and it was sliced deep. Then he was forced to the ground, and he pulled his Energy Sword out, but it was shot out of his hand with a pistol, he was shot multiple times in the hand. Then he disarmed the SPARTAN of his weapon, and turned the tide against him, and drove the Sword into the Spartan's chest. The ship was saved.
The Insurrectionists made him think though, they were more successful then they should be, because of their uncommon strategic tactics, and he had started to bend his tactics due to this, and for the most part, it worked. But his superiors noticed this, but some of them enjoyed the success he was getting, and getting them more popular.
Soon, he was given command of a CAS-Class Assault Carrier, and he was sent on much harder assignments, eliminating whole Covenant bases at a time, helping the UNSC with Insurrectionists, etc.
The Promotion also gave him two elite Sangheili bodyguards, which are also his personal secretaries, and inform him of the situation of the ship.
