Alright, I'm gonna go ahead and get a zombie planning thread going. This is also a thread that fellow Zombie lovers can express interest in joining. All of this will be used in a new zombie RP, entitled "The Dead Will Rise". Since I'm spearheading this, allow me to tell you a few things how this Zombie Apocalypse will work, a lot of it coming from the Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks.
1. Zombies can only be killed by destroying its brain. You can do this by headshot, stabbing through the eyes socket, or just hitting the zombie's head with a blunt object till you break the skull. Even if you cut off the head, the zombie is still alive and can bite.
2. Zombies don't run. I don't care what you've seen in The Walking Dead or Left 4 Dead or Nazi Zombies. Zombies are incapable of running. The fastest one's ever gone (according to the Zombie Survival Guide, is one step every 1.5 seconds)
3. You can't trick Zombies. You've all seen in the movies that people get by zombies by covering themselves in blood and adopting a shambling walk. This DOES NOT work. If you try this, you'll still be attacked.
4. You can't hide from the Undead so easily. You've seen in some movies and shows that as long as you aren't seen by the zombies, they won't know you're their. While somewhat true, you can still attract them by making noise and with your smells emitting from your body. They don't have superhuman senses, but they rely on all of their sense more equally than the living humans, who are primarily sight oriented. And putting on deodorant to cover your B.O won't work either.
5. Zombies are dumb. They aren't intelligent by any means. They cannot climb, think, solve puzzles, or avoid traps. They'll walk head long into a saw if it means getting closer to prey. They get through barriers, doors, and windows by simply hitting them or walking into them long enough for them to break. They "climb" fences by tripping and falling over themselves so much that a pile of them eventually reaches the top of the fence.
6. This is an apocalyptic RP. Grocery stores will have rotting food, buildings will be ruined, highways crammed with cars. You won't find guns lying around with a nice supply of bullets. You may be able to find dead cops with a pistol, or some dead soldier with a machine gun, but they'll have limited ammunition. You're most likely going to be defending yourself with knives and pipes. All weapons wear down, all supplies run out, and all cars run out of fuel. You'll have to do something about these things. Sitting in one camp is not going to work, unless you have some way of getting supplies.
7. You get bit, and you're through. We're not doing the stuff like the Walking Dead, where everyone has the zombie infection and if they die in anyway they'll turn into a zombie. You'll only turn if you get bitten, or you have an open wound brush against a zombie's corpse, or you ingest a piece of zombie (whether on purpose or accidentally). There is no cure and no way to slow down the process, though how long it takes varies.
8. A horde of zombies is not to be taken lightly. Every now and then you see Frank West and Chuck Green run through a horde of zombies, by simply pushing through them. In Left 4 Dead, hordes of running zombies are driven off by four survivors. It isn't that easy, folks. Running through a horde is essentially suicide. And it isn't like Dead Rising, where the undead stop chasing you if you get walk into another location. They'll keep chasing you for miles, following you until they lose your scent or they can't see you, and even then, they might keep going the direction you were going.
9. There are no special zombies. This isn't Left 4 Dead, which has the Special Infected. All zombies are the same, though some are taller, shorter, fatter, etc. There can be some zombies with some unique features, like one wearing a helmet, or one wearing body armor, but nothing fantastic.
10. Mind your terrain. It's hard to climb mountains, and you're not growing crops in the desert or in the city. I might as well say, mind your seasons as well. Terrains change with the seasons.
So that's how things will work in my zombie world. I don't know where we'll start off, or if we'll start in a group or form a group as we go along. I'm open to suggestions and hoping that people will display interest in this and I hope to start it soon when the Nexus is complete.

Count me in, I might have to read this book. So what are we going to do with characters?

We'll deal with the characters when the Nexus has a Submission Box and a Template for characters for the Free Form section.

That'd be a bit hard to do, seeing as we'd either need a different subforum for every thread or let it get super confusing by genre... May I propose you create a separate thread in this subforum, or maybe just get lazy and use this one, for character profiles? As for a template, you could just go with something basic - maybe just name, age, appearance be it picture or description, and equipment, or go even simpler and just have everyone provide a write-up of their character? I'd love to join you, as well, if you'll take me.

When exactly after the start of the apocalypse would this take place. A week? a month? a year? That's going to be important for how much food is still good, how many hordes of zombies have formed, and how much equipment our survivors will have. Also, I would personally request we put some kind of limit on the starting equipment we have (as I'd also prefer if it were just after the zombie outbreak had runs its course) since it'll give us more to work with. Personally, I'd be content to only start with the things I'd have IRL, though it's up to you Steel how we want to work equipment and the timeline. Just some suggestions

Uh...let's go with a month. A week's too short, and a year's too long. I'll go with the lazy option and just have you guys create profiles here. I don't know how the approval's gonna work, but since this is the Free Form, and it's my RP, I guess I'll be the one to approve them, as will other people when they make their own RPs in this section. Alrighty, so, I'll sort of borrow a few things from the Fallout Guide. As for a Template, we'll keep it simple: Name - Age- Gender - Attire - Training - if your character has medical training, fire arm training, hand-to-hand combat training, even if it's something like fixing cars, or flying a plane. I don't want to see anyone putting down that they're a "trained" zombie killer, because no where offers training for that. Weaponry - (Obviously, you can't carry like ten guns on you. You'll probably just have a primary weapon (like a shotgun), and a secondary weapon (pistol, or blade, like a machete. You can, theoretically, have a gun bag like they did in Walking Dead, but you'd better have an explanation for why you have something like that, as it is something primarily for law enforcement or military.) Other Equipment - Personality - History - We aren't doing factions. It's only been a month, and there'll just be pockets of surivors and groups, but they won't be "factions" per se. There won't have been enough time for it to happen. People will still be reeling during the month. So, some grocery stores will have edible food, though the perishable things will have rotted by now. Cities will be largely abandoned, and probably mostly full of the Undead. There might still be some safe havens around, since it's only been a month, but who knows for sure, am I right?

Name - Captain Logan Beck
Age- 37
Gender - Male
Attire - US ACU uniform.
Training - Logan has had training in hand to hand, firearm and basic medical training from his days in the Military, and has honed these arts during the outbreak.
Weaponry - Well maintained M16A4 with silencer, Colt M1911 and a military grade knife.
Other Equipment - Medium sized military backpack, 2 short range walkie-talkies, bandages and a couple M16A4/M1911 Clips.
Personality - Logan has been obsessed with preparing for an apocolypse, but he never thought it would be this early, he has a very hard time trusting someone, and will believe that anyone that approaches him is a threat, Proceed with Caution. But before, he was a kind and hard-working average person, and may be again.
History - Logan Beck was born and raised in Detroit, his parents lived in a small townhouse in a bad part of town, and of his parents financial issues, never had any of the technology that his friends had, and was constantly bullied due to it. He tried his hardest in schooling, but was never the best, and so he was classed with the various gang-levels. Unfortunately, he was indeed sucked into peer pressure, and became part of a smalltime gang that did things from dealing, to robberies. A robbery went bad one time and Logan was the only one caught, the authorities saw he was good at heart, and allowed him to go free with community service, and offered him a spot in the military.
After his community service had been completed, he was sent to boot camp, to be a soldier. Now this is where he excelled, in marksmanship, hand to hand, and even basic medical! He quickly raised in the ranks, and by the time of this apocolypse he was so far up, he was a Captain! He was at an army base in Pennsylvania, when the zombies had broken in, he took a small group away with a Humvee, but through dodging the zombies and the night-time road, he had veered off and flew into a tree, his group were all dead. He had taken their ammo, his M16A4, M1911 and a small knife, and set off to find survivors after he had attended to his wounds.

Name - Connor Andrew Graham
Age- Twenty-six years
Gender - Male
Attire - Connor wears normal street clothes, not far off from what he usually would have worn before it all went to hell. Jeans are a mainstay in what little clothing he has left, as are long-sleeved shirts and a gift from his girlfriend: a snug-fitting leather jacket, which Connor believes to have been the only reason he's survived this long. He also usually wears a pair of knockoff combat boots and a pair of leather driving gloves, both conveniently purloined from the same department store. He realized early on the virus wasn't airborne and as such doesn't normally bother with any sort of gas mask or filtration, but some safety glasses to protect his eyes usually aren't far from his head - usually in a pocket or at his neck.
Training - Connor has high-level medical training, took a few different self-defense courses while he was in college four years ago, and has all the firearms training a month of infrequent use can give him. He read a couple of manuals on firearm maintenance at his late father's behest, so he knows to some extent what he's doing as far as keeping his guns shooty. Connor was also pretty good at hide-and-seek as a kid, and has found that particular set of skills - hiding, moving silently, knowing where people don't usually look - to be more and more useful of late.
Weaponry - Connor usually carries three different sidearms: a Colt M1911, a Walther P99, and a Colt Python revolver, kept in a thigh holster, a hip holster, and at the small of his back respectively. While not especially skilled a marksman, carrying weapons with three rather common types of ammunition certainly helps Connor sleep at night. On top of his pistols, Connor carries a machete, this far and away his preferred weapon, and a hockey stick. While perhaps not an ideal weapon, the stick is durable and a good reminder of his native Canada. It makes for a pretty good walking stick, too.
Other Equipment - Connor uses an old backpack to hold all of his spare ammunition and food. There are normally plenty more bullets than food, given Connor's careful nature and unwillingness to shoot at things.. Within this backpack, he also keeps a cell phone that hasn't worked in weeks, a couple of small pads of paper, and a couple of pens and pencils to keep notes on where and where not to go. He also keeps a medical kit stuffed in the small front pocket of the backpack, basically just a small box filled to the brim with bandages, Advil, antiseptics, and the like.
Personality - Normally a bit more of an impulsive person, the so-called zombie apocalypse has really stripped that aspect of his personality from Connor, leaving him a lot more of a pragmatist than someone who would do the unreasonable. Quiet and soft-spoken at best, he still wants to help people, apocalypse or no - it's what he spent most of his life in school for, anyway - and has had a hard time coming to grips with the fact that some people just want to kill him for fun. That said, gentle nature or no, Connor's mission is to keep himself alive, and so far he's done just that.
History - Originally born in Toronto, Connor lived a bit of a life of privilege. Always traveling between Canada and the States on breaks, always on vacation - he was one of those rich kids who went everywhere with his parents, from Vancouver to cruises in the Bahamas to Paris and Berlin. He saw much of the world, and no matter where he went he noticed the impoverished, the sick, the beggars of their native lands. It was as a kid he decided he wanted to be a doctor, to be rich and charitable and to help those in need as the ideal doctor did. So, he did his best in school and even volunteered to stay home for a couple of those dream trips his parents went on in order to study, when he was old enough. And just a few days after his eighteenth birthday, Connor found himself accepted to Michigan State University: a prestigious enough university, just a hop, a skip, and a jump across the border from his native Toronto.
It wasn't quite until college that he started living, though. One of the curses of traveling as frequently as he had was that there were few permanent friends to be made; so in college, Connor did his best to make some. For his undergraduate courses, he took quite the variety of different classes, most of them graduation requirements - math, chemistry, social sciences, martial arts electives to blow off steam. He graduated after four years of no sleep and plenty of coffee with a 3.85 GPA, good enough to get him into medical school. So he applied to medical schools around the country, figuring it to be less hassle, and wound up in the Boston University School of Medicine. Again, no issue, easy-peasy, sacrificing sleep for his future and the greater good. He set a personal record for consecutive hours sleepless somewhere in the range of three full days, staying up to study for an exam he nearly failed anyway.
But that didn't matter; what did was the fact that he passed his classes, and entered into an internship at one of the hospitals nearby. Connor had finally made it, or close enough - he was finally a doctor, or close enough. Not long after, naturally, was when the apocalypse struck - the first tales of people rising from the dead and biting those nearby, of crazed homeless people attacking people in the streets, all that jazz. The first thing he did when the hospitals closed down was to go home, only to find his parents dead in their home - dead dead, not undead. His father had killed his mother, and then himself with a handgun - somewhat significantly, the Colt M1911 that Connor would later carry and use himself. He never really forgave his father for just giving up like that, but there wasn't much he could have done besides raid the nearest department store, pick up a revolver, some bullets, and other assorted equipment the initial wave of looters had missed, and start surviving in the shadows.

(We'll need a location to start in. I suggest Pennslyvania, since Sal and I's characters are already in that state. Also, I'll approve your characters, though more specifics on Logan Beck are encouraged.) Name - Elizabeth Caldwell
Age- 25
Gender - Female
Attire - A white blouse, with a blue leisure jacket over it, jeans, and black slip on black loafers.
Training - Elizabeth has no real training to name.
Weaponry - Elizabeth's primary weapon is a baseball bat. Ever since the beginning of the zombie uprising, she has gone through a few, but finds them to be quite reliable (and fun).
Other Equipment - A pocket flashlight (from when she worked as an Usher)
Personality - Elizabeth is a pretty determined survivalist, despite her lack of any genuine training. She's a pretty smart gal, and has good common sense about how people are when it comes to major disasters. She usually likes to work alone, but isn't against working with others, as long as they don't do anything stupid.
History - Elizabeth was born and raised in Philly (Philadelphia). During her life, she was always something of a tom-boy, never dressing in skirts or dresses, and not afraid to get her hands dirty. She was an average honor student, bright and knowledgeable in most of her subjects, displaying a fair amount of intelligence.
When she graduated College (with a degree in history, god help her), Elizabeth looked for work and landed a job as an Usher at a movie theater. During which, she saw a fair amount of movies, mostly horror, her favorite genre. As a part of her uniform, she wore a white blouse, a black tie, and black pants, and had to have a watch (to keep track of showing times) and a pocket flashlight. Life was pretty boring, but not for long. Elizabeth never expected the horror movies to be anywhere else but on the Movie screen.
When the dead came to life, Elizabeth was forced to leave Philly, as the town had undergone way to much insanity (what with the dead and gang violence erupting due to the lack of authorities) to make it back in. Therefore, she does not know if her parents have survived the outbreak and are alive somewhere, or are now part of the walking dead.
Elizabeth, knowing she didn't have any firearm training, quickly turned to melee weapons. She found a baseball bat to be one of the most fun ways to kill the zombies. She actually, despite the situation, rather enjoys the outbreak in some ways. Life is never boring, there are new skills to be learned and new opportunities that were never possible, and then the many ways she could think of to kill the living dead.
Things are certainly going to be interesting...

I've read Max Broox's zombie survival guide several times, so I'm very keen for this Name – Father Francis “Frank” Carnegie Age- 29 Gender - Male Attire – Black priest robes (torn at the knees) and dog collar. He wears a wooden rosary on his wrist. Training – Father Frank spent three years of his life doing missionary work in Tanzania. Therefore he knows a trick or two about finding/purifying water, and is a certified first aider. During his time there, Father Frank’s proudest achievement was building a school, so he could easily whip up a few anti-zombie barricades from planks of wood. After all, he’s been following in the footsteps of a Carpenter for some time now… Weaponry – A big, gold plated catholic sceptre. The top is shaped like a crucifix. It’s light enough to carry but heavy enough to be an effective bludgeoning weapon. He also carries a wooden stake. When news of the zombie outbreak spread, some people though it was a just an online prank. One of his congregation got him the stake as a joke. Now Father Frank often uses the two weapons in tandem (i.e, pinning a zombie to a wall with his sceptre and plunging the stake through its eye). Other Equipment – A small bottle of holy water. Personality – Since the zombie outbreak, Father Frank’s fundamentalist beliefs have had to become a little flexible. Time was, he’d give you a pamphlet and tell you he loved you, but was deeply concerned about where you’d spend eternity. Now he doesn’t know what to believe. When it comes to survival, he leans on others and defers to their expertise. Father Frank has always found good fortune in a flock – now more than ever. When it comes to combat, he’s strangely capable. The father may have no combat training or experience, but he makes up for it with years of repressed aggression and frustration which can only be described as “nerd rage”. History – Francis Carnegie was born in Boston to firm but loving Catholic parents. Looking back on his childhood, the happiest, proudest and most special memories were all in church. His first bible reading. Choir practise. His first kiss with Caitlin Hennessy in the Vestry, aged twelve. Matt’s life was all about the church, and he didn’t care who knew that. From seminary to mass, Father Frank was determined to be the cool priest. The father who played his guitar in bars and coffee shops, handed bottled water out to drunks and made people want to come to know God, instead of just feeling like they had to. Moments of quiet doubt haunted Father Frank priesthood. When the dead rose, those doubts could no longer be ignored. The Rapture had taken place. And Father Frank was still here. The Father kept doing what he always had done – helping others. Ever the pacifist, he adopts the position that the living dead should not be hunted for sport, but killed quickly and painlessly so their souls can be at rest. However, these are only words. The unspeakable betrayal he feels at the hands of his Creator has been transformed into pure fury. Father Frank can only give full vent to this fury during battles with zombies – and it’s not exactly church-like behaviour…

Hope you don't mind if I opt in (here from the Fallout RP)
Name - Stephanos "Stephan" Zotico
Age- 21
Gender - Male
Physical appearance - Brown hair, Brown eyes 5' 11, 156 lbs lean build
Attire - unzipped brown jacket has black t-shirt underneath wears green bandanna as a choker (loosely worn around neck) dark black jeans, and a large backpack
Training - High range firearm training and urban survival training
Weaponry - Greek military camo KEFEFS-M 7.62mm sniper rifle (over shoulder sling) and a black P-7 9mm Pistol. (pistol hip holster)
Other Equipment - Multi-tool (similar to Swiss army knife but with pliers as well) 7.62mm and 9mm magazines a few cans of beans and a full canteen (all kept in backpack) military folding shovel attached to the side of the backpack.
Personality - very sociable and easy going but since the death of his friends Alphonso and Damien (both died after the outbreak), Stephanos had completely changed in personality (but still has weak spots for social interaction and past habits) he has since the death of his friends completely removed himself from emotional attachments for survival purposes he will usually take the easiest route to ensure his own survival and will always take the opportunist approach. He will often roam on his own but will always prefer to group over the individual.
History - Stephanos Zotico is a Greek immigrant to the united states back in his home country he had a difficult and impoverished life. Like most people in pursuit of a better life, he moved to america more specifically to Pennsylvania, but Stephanos will always miss life in Greece and all of his friends and family he shared a common love with them for firearms and 2 of (in his opinion the most important) things he brought was his 2 Greek produced firearms. Eventually he began working as a mechanical engineer for an urban development group that worked for the city he eventually found 2 new friends Alphonse and Damien through work and they too shared his love for firearms occasionally they would go out into the country for target practice Stephanos had a particular love for the sniper rifle he became an excellent shot over time. The group began to grow increasingly worried over the amount of gun violence in their city and decided to apply for conceal carry permits from then on Stephanos always kept his p-7 9mm with him and his friends carried their own weapons themselves. A few years went by and the unthinkable happened a zombie outbreak the group of three were watching a football game in Stephanos apartment when a PSA (public service announcement) came on the tube it warned citizens to stay inside for unknown reasons the 3 went to investigate like any self respecting investigators would...through social media! Zombie was the number one word that came up the three in relative disbelief grabbed their firearms Stephanos was the only one with a weapon other than a pistol and was able to grab his Sniper before the group left they began to drive out to investigate these "zombie goings-on" there drive led them into panic in the streets. The three decided to navigate their way just outside of Pennsylvania to avoid the hordes inside the city they temporarily held up camp in a gun shop where they were able to find small stocks of ammo and Stephanos found a folding military grade shovel he used for decapitating zombies, for a good two weeks they were able to hold off the zombies when they began to run out of food and water stocks they found in the store. The three survivors decided to move out to a near-by super market to load up on supplies but were ambushed by another group held out in the store the assaulting group consisted of one man and one woman both with pistols while the two were outnumbered they still managed to shoot and kill Alphonso before they both met their demise at the hands of Stephanos and Damien the two surviving members continued to hide out in the supermarket gorging on what food stocks they could. It was almost a month since the outbreak began when the two began to hear moans out of the windows of the store the two were believed they were more than prepared for another group of Zombies since they were able to last as long as they had, the "group" of zombies turned out to be more than they could handle they managed to kill a few before being run out of the building on there sprint away from the hoard Damian (who had forgotten to tie his shoe that day) tripped and was consumed by the swarm Stephanos knew he had to keep running and made his way back closer to the city and found a small abandoned warehouse where he decided to hold out for as long as he could...

Name - David Graham
Age- 25
Gender - Male
Attire - Baggy carhartt jacket, a military pistol belt over it, with an Alice style pouch and canteen attached to the belt. Tan combat boots, faded green cargo pants, green military pilot's gloves, woodland camouflage backpack.
Training - Military simulation training. (Airsoft)
Weaponry - Military folding spade, small knife, single-shot break-action 20 gauge shotgun.
Other Equipment - GERBER multi-tool, box o' matches, wallet with forty buck in it, flat-billed fedora, dead MP3 player,
Personality - Humble, kind to friends and family, before the outbreak, there weren't alot of things David wouldn't have done for those he cared about, he'd even go as far as taking a bullet for them if given the chance, however now, all those people are gone, eaten, turned, and some put back to rest by Graham. Now he's left to fend for himself, which has impacted his personality severely, forcing him think and act selfishly, for his own survival.
History - David was born and raised on a farm in Pennsylvania, just a few hours out from Philadelphia. He grew up a hard worker, never complaining that a job was too hard or he was being worked too long, he did the job, got paid, went home, simple as that. Once he turned twenty, he moved to Philadelphia in an apartment with his girlfriend, Claudia. He got a job there as a short order cook in a small diner while she went to school for a medical degree to become a doctor.
They ran into some financial issues, so David had to get a second hard labor job at a factory, while she had to take a part time job as a waitress. The following years David was offered a job to be a DJ on one of the local city classic rock radio stations after talking to a man on the street, who turned out to be the owner of the station. The job paid enough that he was able to drop both his other ones, taking some stress off his life. Claudia had become very close to graduating medical school before the world darkened
Claudia came home, she had been attacked... and bit. She gained a fever, David tried taking her to the hospital but the local law enforcement was keeping people in their buildings. He watched as the fever burned her. After enough time, she couldn't hold on any longer, her life slipped away from her. David was devastated, and had no way of preparing for what happened next. She leaped from the bed and tried to eat Graham. After a long struggle with her and hundreds of pleads, he was met with his only option.
David Graham didn't waste any time leaving that apartment. Not knowing what had happened to the city, or what to expect in the streets, he grabbed his gear and left the building.
