Born to the Caleb-Bradbertons doesn’t always have it’s perks. Yes, being the eldest he was assured the top spot of the family, and the position of overseer of Vault 44 (because of his family’s “ownership” of the vault), but he was forced to promote this family image – even if no one really cared for it anymore. At thirteen, Malcolm started to grow his beard, as this was mandatory in his family. The famous Caleb-Bradberton beard was something of a mythology in the family, and every man was expected to grow one, making any of them men instantly recognisable.
Malcolm grew up with distaste for Nuka-Cola, though he had virtually no choice but to be all smiles about it. He had to lie through his teeth about the stuff, despite hating it’s very guts, because that’s “what a Caleb-Bradberton does”. This training forced upon him by his family would make him a cunning businessman in the future, knowing how to sell, how to charm and how to lie convincingly.
When his father died, due to some problem with his heart, Malcolm took his father’s place in the shareholder table. Eventually he would become overseer, once his grandfather died anyway. The effect of his father’s passing barely affected him outwardly. Due to the businessman instincts within him however, he soon let them past and grieved in private.
After a while he started putting a plan together to open the vault with a few of the other shareholders. All they had to do was to wait until his grandfather died… though this took a very, very long time.
Reaching his fifties, and now finally Overseer of Vault 44, Malcolm took it upon himself to open the vault, after the majority of the shareholders (Malcolm included) decided enough was enough. When they eventually found out that it was habitable outside in the wasteland, the opened the vault and went in search of new flavours. This had been their initial goal, knowing that water would be irradiated. As they secured the headquarters of the Nuka-Cola building, they came across several scavengers, who claimed to be big fans of Nuka-Cola. After meeting with Malcolm personally, it was decided that there would be trades between the scavengers and the vault, swapping the vault’s cola, with anything the edible or drinkable that the scavengers could get their hands on. It soon became apparent that they didn’t care that half of it was irradiated as hell. The desire for bigger varieties drew in more people, and soon enough there was a mass attack of raiders from the nearby areas. In the ensuing assault, a lot of people died. This happened several times, until Malcolm decided the loss of life wasn’t worth it, and began talks with the shareholders to close the vault once and for all.
The scavengers, who had seen the vault dwellers’ decline into isolationism, began to bring more powerful weapons to encourage them to stay open, some even volunteered to train the vault dwellers, and some even offered to stay and join their ranks. Malcolm oversaw this, as was his job, and put fourth plans to make a small settlement in the wasteland, attracting people to the pre-war tourist attraction. Eventually his dream would come true, and now he sits in the boardroom of the Nuka-Cola Corporation, managing the business, just like his ancestors did.
