Johnathan Rico was born into a large military family on the planet Reach, one of many children of two career Spartan IV's. Cared for by his retired grandfather who also served as a Spartan IV, John joined the Spartan V program as soon as he was old enough to participate. John excelled in the program, with military life bred into his veins, and graduated top of his class out of the nine-hundred and fifty seven that survived the program. He immediately afterwards proceeded to attend the Luna OCS Academy, finishing the training in the minimum of 4 years while he was twenty one.
