Personality: A stern, but kind leader, he treats his crew with respect, and they treat him with respect, but is quite hard on them when they purposely fail, but give constructive critisism whenever they accidentally fail. As a person, he's a cool guy, loving to hang with his friends.
Jason Buckley spent his days on the family farm, the first Buckley to want to join the military. He made sure to be a good shooter. Once he enlisted in the UNSC, he was a great soldier, and good at commanding, he was being drafted for two things at once, commanding a ship, and Orbital Drop Shock Troopers. One of those was out of the equation when a mission went wrong.
Jason's squad was isolated on an uncharted planet, and it was odd for their communications to be cut off. They setup base camp, but were discovered by Storm Covenant. Almost all of his 9 teammates were killed, only himself and a Corporal survived, and Jason had suffered a concussion, and wasn't at the top of his game, so while Jason was still early in his military career, schooled him for Officer.
First they put him on a corvette, and went well on it, and they kept bumping him up, but he declined any other roles once he was assigned to the Vanguard.
