Dunaar was born in Mor Khazgur, in Skyrim. From birth, it could be seen Dunaar would be a tall Orc, but he just never stopped growing. He eventually got the nickname ‘Son of Mountain’, or just ‘Mountain’. The chief was of course hugely proud of his son, especially when he turned out to be both an able smith and a powerful fighter. The one thing that slightly worried him was the fact that Dunaar never got angry, even when his brothers and sisters made fun of him, or played practical pranks on him. He just spent his days learning smithing in the forge, working in the mine or training with to fight with his father.
This all changed when he was 18. His younger brother Nazdreg, who was 17, spoilt and cocky, challenged him to a fight. Dunaar was working in the mine, and refused stating he was enjoying his work. Nazdreg stood next to him for hours mocking him endlessly, calling him cowardly, pathetic, undeserving of his status of Chief’s eldest son. Dunaar continued to work calmly through all this, until suddenly, he threw down his pick and with a grunt, grabbed his smaller brother under the arms and bodily carried him to the forge, where he took two Orc Warhhammers, and stood ready to fight.
The fight was short and savage, but in the end Dunaar stood over the body of his brother, his skull caved in and blood pooling on the ground. His father saw the whole affair, and although deep down, he knew that the murder was caused by years of bullying and inner turmoil, but as chief he could not show weakness and be lenient. He sentenced Dunaar to death, or exile. Dunaar chose exile, and left that evening.
He had travelled for a few years, and was now 22 and a seasoned traveller, mostly wandering the borders of High Rock and Hammerfell. One day, he was walking when he was shouted down by an Orc women, a year or so younger than him. She had a fire in her eyes and an excitement that interested Dunaar thoroughly, she was called Mellah gra-Shaal and they got to travelling together. It turned out the girl was from an old Orcish tribe in the mountains, called the Shaal. Eventually, their friendship became intimate, and when they confessed love to each other, Mellah told him that the Shaal did not completely follow the old Orcish ways, anyone was allowed to marry and have children, and that he must take the Shaal Trial of Adulthood, and join the tribe to marry her.
They travelled for weeks through the mountains, and eventually spent a week climbing a mountain, to find and Orc Stronghold at the summit. The Shaal, like Mellah were shorter, bulkier than normal Orcs, so when Dunaar trudged through the camp, he stood out like a sore thumb. It turned out the tribe Chief was a fierce old Orc called Krawl gro-Shaal, who was Mellah’s Unlce. He said to join the tribe and marry his niece, he must complete three tests. The first two were easy, the traditional payment of a dowry and a wrestling match with the girl’s father. As Mellah’s father had been killed by Krawl to gain the role of Chief, Dunaar wrestled him. Using his height, he was able to lift up the older Orc and slam him bodily several times into the floor.
The last test was the Shaal Trial of Adulthood; he had to climb the mountain, a week’s journey, with only three days of food, all the while fending off the huge wolves and mountain cats that prowled the mountain side in search of goats. Dunaar reached the top in eight days; he was thin and exhausted, but wrapped in wolf furs. A huge scar was found on his back where a mountain cat had apparently used him as a scratching post as he slept.
Dunaar and Mellah were married as soon as Dunaar recovered, given a small hut to themselves, and lived very happily. Dunaar worked as the stronghold blacksmith, whilst Mellah went out and hunted Goats, wolves and cats. They had twin boys, Halen and Arlen, who were rowdy and mischievous to the extreme. When Dunaar was 33, and the boys were eight, Mellah suddenly died of an unknown disease. Krawl, who now considered Dunaar family, helped him greatly with quiet conversations, which gave Dunaar encouragement. After two years, Dunaar decided he needed to leave. He informed his sons of his plan, who immediately asked to let them go with him, but he gently refused, telling them to stay with the tribe, who all adored the boys, and to take over the forge. He also told Krawl, who gave Dunaar a Shaal tribe necklace, the two biggest fangs from three different wolves on a cord woven from their fur. Dunaar left in the dead of night, taking nothing but some supplies, his hammer and his armour.
After two years of random walking, Dunaar’s instincts took him back to Skyrim. He first went to Solitude, and on a random impulse, bought a dog. He named it Malacath, or Mal for short.
