Al was raised in Texas by his father, who was a wanderer. He never knew who his mother was, but his father always told him she was a wonderful woman. He grew-up literally worshipping the Desert Rangers, he and his father would play endless games of ‘Ranger vs Mutant’, and of course Ranger Albert always won. When he was a little older, his father taught him to shoot, to fight with his hands and how to survive in the wasteland, which plants to avoid and such.
When he was 16, he was approached by a Ranger and asked if he wanted to join their number. Al didn’t even pause to reply; he immediately sprinted over to his father and told him. He spent 2 years finalising his training with the rangers, and officially joined them at 18. After 5 years in the rangers, Al got closer to another ranger called Judith, and after a while they got married. By then, the Rangers were fighting with the Legion. In a particularly disastrous battle, Al lost his ear, but he also lost Judith, to a Centurion’s Super Sledge.
Completely distraught by grief, he left the Rangers when they signed the agreement with the NCR, and travelled randomly. He ended up in Vault City, and became a total boozer until Duke arrived. The younger man’s cheerful and friendly nature somehow woke something up in Albert, and he offered his services to Duke.
