Growler got his name from the fact that every dog he ever came across hated him, and would just sit there and growl at him till he went away. Ever since he had been two, he had owned a leather flight hat and goggles his father had bought him, although they didn’t fit him, he always wore them, and never took them off. His father and mother were both drug users, and mostly ignored him. Growler spent most of his time talking to the random traders that went to and fro in front of his house. When he was six, one such Trader was a big man with a huge beard called Duke, who had a straggly bodyguard with him called Albert, and a stronger one called Hunter.
The three men completely stole the imagination from the child. Every night he would dream of the amazing adventures he would have with Duke and the gang.
Two years later, around Growler’s eighth birthday, he once again saw Duke and the others walk past his house. When they had walked past a while, he snuck behind and hid in the cart. When he was found, he was told gently but firmly to go home. When Growler refused, Duke carried him there himself. When he saw the state of the house, and the parents completely drugged up on the couch, Duke changed his mind, and carried Growler back to the cart. He took Growler on as an apprentice, and left with him the following evening.
