Alei was born on Sanghelios, like most Elite, into a militaristic family. She was expected to join the Sangheili as soon as possible, although she didn’t like the idea at first. She was trained day after day, night after night, learning everything from firing a weapon to wielding an energy blade. Although she hated it in the beginning, Alei learnt to love it and couldn’t wait to join the rest of her brothers and sisters in the battlefield. Alongside this training, Alei had the beliefs of the Sangheili - Honour, Loyalty, Respect, Courage, Cooperation - drilled into her head.
At the age of 17, Alei joined the Sangheili as a regular soldier. She was in many a fight, against many an enemy, doing better than she or anyone could have ever hoped. The relentless training had paid off, making her practically untouchable in the kind of fights she was in. She fought for 3 years until her hard work paid off. She was picked out of her squad by the higher-ups, and offered a promotion. A promotion all the way to a Zealot, the holy warriors of the Sangheili. She gleefully accepted, settling into her new role without any problems.
The role of a Zealot was much more taxing on Alei, however. Her missions became much more important, much more dangerous. She pulled through each one, most without too many problems, but barely scraping through others. Luckily, she was never looked down upon for this, as the Sangheili were as honourable as ever. She was relieved by this, but promised herself she’d do better. At the age of 23, three years a Zealot, she was dispatched to a rather important mission. She was to take a Banshee, given only about two days training on how to fly, behind enemy lines to retrieve Forerunner artifacts before the enemy even knew they were gone. Once the artifacts were secure, she was to join an assault to wipe out the enemy forces stationed there. She found the Banshee flyable enough, easily slipping past the enemy and even getting the artifacts easily. She delivered them to a safe location and joined the assault. However, they were in for more than they bargained. Enemy reinforcements arrived, hearing of the attack and slaughtering the majority of the Sangheili forces. It was down to her and a handful of soldiers to either finish the job, or retreat. Being the highest ranking member of the group, she ordered an attack. They were outnumbered 2:1, but to retreat would be to soil their honour, at least in Alei’s mind. They succeeded, just barely, leaving Alei and the majority of her surviving men mortally wounded. She accepted this death, seeing it as a perfectly sound and honourable death. Death denied her, however, as one of the healthier Sangheili called in help. She was saved, although scars were weaved throughout her entire body.
Although the fight left her weak, it also left her experienced. She’d been wounded plenty of times, and been on plenty of missions, but wounded to this degree or this taxing a mission. Once recovered, both her and her brothers noticed a change. Rather than scraping along in missions, weighing down her team more than anything, she was almost leading them. She fought battle after battle, for another 17 years, at the age of 40, she was dispatched to a supercarrier, the first she’d ever even seen. It took her a few weeks to settle in, but she managed it. She was assigned to Zealot Team 14, one of the squads on the ship. She couldn’t do much on the ship itself, she couldn’t cook or help maintain it, or help the wounded. She could, however, fight better than a lot of the men on the ship. Due to this, if needed with nothing else to do, she would help train some of the lower ranking Sangheili or even the SPARTAN’s at times.
