Well, guys, Zen's got a craving for some cyberpunk/outright-futuristic freeform RP. To that end, he's got two settings in mind, which he'll go over in more detail later: Shadowrun and Star Wars. Don't mind this third-person narrative stuff, he'll probably stop that eventually too. This thread will likely also serve as character creation for whichever one eventually happens.
So. Shadowrun. It's an interesting setting. It's kind of like Dungeons and Dragons meets futuristic, vaguely dystopic society (the new Total Recall, for example - everybody's either superprivileged or living in the slums) ruled by (usually Japanese) corporations, meets heist film (the Ocean's movies, Inception, that kind of thing).
I haven't really ironed out a general idea for the plot yet, but characters would most likely be the eponymous Shadowrunners. An average group of runners (slang already? Yep) is pretty similar to, say, the main cast of characters from Inception - you've got your negotiator kinda guy, the driver, the guy who buys everything you need, the guy who shoots stuff, the guy who does recon before you dive into a job. Shadowrunners do a lot of infiltration and corporate espionage kind of stuff, from assassinating some dude to stealing a highly-advanced prototype. They usually work for the corporations, because it's a pretty cutthroat world, and while the job pays well the risks (death, arrest, etc.) are often worse.
There's magic, too, and a bunch of fantasy races (humans, trolls, dwarves, elves, and orks (yes, with a K) are the main ones, but there are others too) and some futuristic guns. Characters are generally magically talented in a traditional wizardy kind of way, or they're shamans who follow an animal totem that more often than not at least partially fits their personalities - the Bear for a brave fighting kind of person, the Coyote for someone more cunning and tricksy, the Snake for a stealthier soul. Or they're cyborgs, which is pretty self-explanatory.
There's a good bit of influence from Japanese society, too. You've got your street samurai, which are basically cyborg mercenaries who follow what amounts to a samurai's code of honor. They have swords, they have guns, you name it. You've got your Japanese megacorporations, often with dragons at the head.
It's pretty cool stuff. But Wikipedia can probably tell you more than me.
And then you've got Star Wars. If you really need me to explain the Star Wars universe and setting to you (though I forgive not knowing most of what happens in the books), we're no longer friends. Though we'd possibly be rolling with a pre-films type of setting, where the Jedi are a bit more common and the Mandalorians and whatnot are more at the top of their game.
So, anyone interested in either? I've got some interesting plot ideas and stuff roaming around in this head of mine.
