Mark was born to two Knights, the father, Felix Aussenheimer being of German lineage. His mother died in childbirth. He was originally considered as a knight, and was given basic firearm training, but his natural love for learning allowed him to be transferred to a Scribe. He want with his father and Elder Lyons to the citadel when he was 9.
Mark was a cheerful, happy and well-loved member of the Scribes, his natural gentleness and love and respect for life made him a perfect candidate to learn medicine. He refused to go near blood or gore however, so he worked as a sort of pharmacist. During his education, they did Germany, specifically around the First and Second World War. Mark was fascinated by his ancestor's culture and dedication to the 'Fatherland'. Although he was disgusted by the horrendous atrocities done to the minorities, he was still proud of his lineage. His father was very proud and taught him German.
One day, he was commanded by Elder Lyons to go out with a squad of knights, one of which was his father, to retrieve some medical data and identify some mysterious substances found by some scouts in an old doctor’s office. Mark went with them eagerly, excited to see the outside world.
The team never came back, and after three weeks, Elder Lyons sent a squad to find them. When they returned, all they came back with was Mark. His left arm was caked in dried blood. Mark himself was fading in and out of consciousness, muttering incoherently in German.
When he recovered, the wound on his arm seemed to have been done by Mark himself, and was a crude drawing of a Nazi swastika, sliced into his arm with a rusty combat knife found clamped in his hand.
He told his story to the Elder when no-one else was around. They were ambushed by a huge raider group when they left. They were very smart, disorientating the Knights with grenades and knocking them out with sledgehammers. Mark was busy carrying the data, and couldn't protect himself, so he was beaten savagely. When he woke up, he was in the raider camp, tied up and gagged. He was released, beaten and questioned intently about his skills. When he told them he knew medicine, they told him he was now a slave, and they had to do what they told him. He was forced to heal the bandit's wounds after every raiding trip, and was beaten viciously whenever he refused. When he first had to dig bullets out of wounds and stitch up cuts, he threw up violently, but slowly he got used to the blood and smell of pus and death.
Eventually, he was brought out to find the five knights he had traveled with, bound to tables. The raider leader gave him a rusted combat knife, and instructed to horribly disfigure each knight, following the raiders instructions precisely. He sobbed quietly as he sawed his father's nose off, then sliced his leg open and stuffing the nose deep into the cut. He was grateful when he was allowed to kill the knights. Afterwards, he realized he was no better then the Nazi doctors in the concentration camps he had learned about as a child. He took the knife, and sliced a swastika crudely into the flesh of his left bicep.
That same night, Brotherhood Knights assaulted the camp, killing everyone they had found. Eventually, they discovered Mark in the Leaders hut. The leader had been nailed to the wall, and with anatomical precision, Mark had sliced every bone out of his body. The bones were placed in neat lines on the small bed inside. Mark was filthy with blood and mud, half starved and covered in bruises.
The friendly, timid young scribe was gone. Mark was now a hard man, when even a drop of blood could have made him retch; he now treated ripped-off limbs without even batting an eyelid. Mark was given his old job of cataloging and prescribing drugs for the chapter, under the careful gaze of more senior scribes. After about two years of showing absolute perfect behavior, the Scribes allowed him to start working as a proper doctor, and after another year, a surgeon. Although what Mark had done to the raider was horrible, his skill with a scalpel and his natural desire for perfection made him a very good doctor, and his abilities could not be wasted.
Several months later, the entire medical ward was filled with agonized screaming. When scribes ran to find out what it was, they found Mark elbow deep in a recruits stomach, the recruit was strapped to a table with leather belts, still awake and howling in agony.
When they finally got Mark off of the boy, he explained very calmly that the boy had been weak and inferior, and that knocking him out for the operation would have been a waste of resources. Mark was stripped of his title as a Scribe, and sentenced to be killed. Mark escaped however, brutally disfiguring several scribes and knights with a scalpel and Bonesaw as he went.
Mark fled to South Carolina, where he was found and taken by a group of raiders known as the Storm Troopers, their obvious German style of tactics and speech delighted Mark, and when he was brought before their Furher, he immediately offered his services to them. He started off as a basic trooper, but his combat skills were not proficient for all-out battles, but his skills at medicine were for more than any other Trooper. He was made a doctor, and steadily gained ranks through healing injured soldiers, until the Fuhrer sent for him.
The Fuhrer had of course heard Mark's life stories, and wanted to test his other skills. He started working as the Fuhrer's personal torturer, brutally disfiguring and maiming people at the Fuhrer's command. He gained a name around the camp...Das Metzger. The Butcher
Eventually, Mark was made a lieutenant, and was offered a chance to join the Staatssicherheit, the Fuhrer's spies and scouts. After debating the idea in his head for a while, Mark accepted the offer and left Stumpy Point immediately to explore the East Coast and report to the Fuhrer of any factions that pose a threat to the Storm Troopers, and to join and subtly ally them with the Storm Troopers if he thought he could.
