Rah'mun, like most Sangheili, was raised from birth not knowing his father. He always had his mentor, who taught him and the others all the skills and etiquette he would need as an adult, but he never felt like a proper father figure. Rah went on to learn the art of swordsmanship, he practised with all manner of firearms, from plasma pistols to needle rifles. He learnt the inner workings of vehicles and equipment. He learnt how to survive. Of course, he also had to learn teamwork. He did not like this training, the teamwork, the bonding with your brothers and sisters. He preferred to do his training alone, with only his mind as a spectator.
After finally becoming old enough to join the military, he did so without hesitation, leaving his childhood behind.
Rah started off as a minor, a grunt, cannon fodder. And he trained every day and every night, no matter the conditions. He joined every mission he was able to, always upholding his honour and becoming a better soldier. He rigorously pulled himself through the ranks. From Minor to Major, Major to Ultra. He trained for a time in Special Operations. He enjoyed this work, as it was quiet and usually solitary.
In his time as a Spec Ops Officer, he was assigned a mission. Himself, three other Officers and a handful of Human 'Demons' were to go behind Storm Covenant lines, detonate their munitions stores and then fight their way to a designated rendezvous point. Eager as ever to prove his combat prowess, he accepted the mission. Everyone grabbed their equipment, then took a DAV class Light Corvette to the target planet, an old colony world that the Storm Covenant had claimed. The ship landed on a ridge approximately 2.4 miles away from the enemy complex and they started to advance.
Night had fallen upon the complex, and combined with their camouflage, made them completely invisible at anything less than sword distance. They managed to reach their objective without much difficulty, killing any hostiles they came across so they wouldn't have to fight them on the way out. Rah felt a bit bad for them, as being stabbed in the back was hardly an honourable way to die, but the mission required it. The Demons set up their crude explosives (with a few plasma grenades just to be sure) then set them for 5 minutes.
When the explosives went off, they were already on the move, moving quickly out of the centre of the camp. The explosion would have slain many, as potential enemies would have gone to the armoury to grab their equipment. The unit made a B-line towards the edge of the complex, killing everything they came across with blade and gun. Rah was in sight of the edge when reinforcements, in the form of 5 Zealots, arrived. Two of them were armed with Fuel Rod Cannons, the other three with Energy Swords. And although the Demons seemed relaxed and casual (one even making a joke involving mating), Rah and his battle brothers knew they were screwed.
They engaged the unit of Zealots who blocked their path. The Demons attacked the three with swords, while the Sangheili took out the other two. With a few close calls and the loss of only one Sangheili, they managed to take them down. The Demons had already lost three men, and last two weren't doing very well. Rah's unit fired upon the Zealots, managing to take one down with a combination of Plasma Repeaters and Plasma Rifles, before the other two were lunging at them. Rah managed to dash to the side, while another Sangheili was not so lucky. The Zealot tried slashing at Rah, so he used his Repeater to block, which was sliced through like paper. The force behind the blow had knocked Rah off balance though, and the Zealot had him pinned to the ground. As the Zealot raised his sword high in the air for the final blow, Rah jabbed his wrist-mounted Energy Dagger into its mandibles.
After taking the dead Zealot's Energy Sword, Rah approached the final Zealot and with a loud growl, issued a challenge. The opposing Zealot, a female, was confident in her abilities with a sword and gladly accepted. The battle was quick and brutal, Rah almost suffering a fatal blow, leaving a scar across his right eye. After 6 minutes of slashing and lunging, while not succeeding in dealing any major damage, the Zealot began to tire. With a swift kick, Rah managed to knock her off balance. And as he stood above her, he pointed the sword to her chest and looked her in the eyes.
Staring into those eyes, Rah was struck by odd thoughts. Thoughts of females, of marriage, of love. Of all the everyday things that he had denied so that he could fight. Maybe one day, he would quit all of this, settle down and buy an estate. Find a woman, have children and live a civilian life. These thoughts were pushed aside. He could not worry about such things, this would cause weakness, something utterly unacceptable in his line of work. Suddenly the thoughts had evaporated, and he slid his sword through the Zealots chest. Rah kept eye contact until the light vanished from her eyes, then lowered her body to the ground.
Though the group had a quick respite, more storm covenant were armed and closing on them. Rah and the other surviving Sangheili escorted the remaining two Humans, as one was injured and required the other for support. They moved as quickly as possible towards the ridge where the ship was located, although the cover between the them was scarce, and only luck and the personal Energy Shields built into their armor kept the casualty rate from increasing. They reached the stealth corvette and the humans were hurried up into the ship.
Rah was about to enter as well, but a far off Kig-Yar sniper fired and scored a direct hit into the other Sangheili's chest. Finding that he was only wounded, Rah dragged the Sangheili into the corvette and the ship took off into the atmosphere. The mission soon came to a close, as they had completed their objectives, and the mission was considered a success, despite the 5 casualties. They had struck a blow against the Storm Covenant, this would delay them in coming battles.
Soon after they got back, Rah was promoted to a Zealot, while the other Sangheili left, to live a more peaceful life as he had seen enough battle for his lifetime. Rah'mun was tempted to follow him, to settle down. But he couldn't, he had his pride and his honour, and he refused to give them up yet. He would stay in service, his time was not yet. After saying quick goodbyes, they went on their separate ways.
Over the next 14 years, Rah continued as a Zealot, joining on countless missions and campaigns. He became a master in the art of the sword, and was soon able to wield it effortlessly in combat. Rah'mun still aimed high, hoping to become a Field Master within the next 200 cycles (roughly 9 years) but until then, he would continue his training, constantly improving, constantly learning.
Rah's next assignment was meant to be on a Supercarrier named Graceful Eminence. He would be assigned a unit of Zealots to work with, and was contemplating what they would be like as his ship landed in the hanger bay. He grabbed his gear and stepped out onto the Supercarrier, his next mission about to begin...
