Name: Autonomy Labs
Type of Faction: Research Complex
Faction Leader: The Mainframe
Active Characters: The Mainframe, Garth
Other Notable Figures: N/A
Goals: To continue researching regardless of what happened on the surface
Beliefs: Research is the only thing worth focusing on
Allegiances: General Atomics International (even though only their machines remain)
Enemies: House Industries and it’s subdivisions
Headquarters: The Mainframe’s inner complex
Locations: Autonomy Labs complex, Autonomy Labs Offices.
Armaments: Integrated Laser Guns, Mesmetrons, though some robobrains have the ability to use guns
Armor and Uniform: N/A
Vehicles: N/A
Technology: The labs themselves have a vast array of technology at their disposal, though a lot of it is worn down and breaks easily. Most of it is used purely for research, however they do have the capacity to build and repair robobrains.
Other: The area around the complex is technically under their control, but only because people risk being mezzed by their mesmetrons and being kidnapped for “testing” and eventual conversion.
Numbers: 10 Mr Gutsy Robots, 20 Mr Handys, 25 Robobrains, 1 Artificial intelligence
Before the war, Autonomy Labs had been a subdivision of the company General Atomics International. When government contracts for the Robobrain units began flooding into the General Atomics International mail box, the company bought up a disused salt mine in Saltville, Virginia. They moved the Autonomy Labs HQ there, and then converted their old HQ into a Robobrain manufacturing facility. As the labs HQ was set up, they built into the salt mine, keeping the majority of the research safe and secure away from prying eyes.
Within the facility, they began their constant research with the robobrain units. They would train their human victims – criminals from the local jails – with mental and physical challenges, before the ultimate goal of putting their brain in a jar and turning them into robobrains. At some point, The Mainframe was installed in the complex, where it would be used to organize the robobrains in the facility and manage the day to day running of the labs.
When the bombs dropped in 2077, the mine protected the scientists in the labs for quite a while, but it soon became clear that not all was well within the labs themselves. One by one the survivors vanished and one robobrain appeared as if by magic. At first, no one particularly noticed the increase in robobrains, due to the similar appearance of them all. But they soon began to realise that they were outnumbered, and by then it was too late. Eventually all of the scientists either became robobrains or died in the process.
Over the next two hundred years, some of the robobrains went insane, whilst others became enthralled by the Mainframe. The Labs took quite a beating as robobrains went insane, as well as simply time, and the strain of the damage done in 2077. By the present, the labs have become run down and broken in places. Whilst the majority of the robots do keep the labs intact, sometimes holes appear. Sometimes the robots will be damaged, and their numbers will be refilled by wastelanders who venture near the complex.
