He has sympathy towards the addicted, having worked with them all his life. That isn’t to say he’s a push over, he knows that with addicts you have to be firm, and as such, he will often push for treatment, which he is willing to give for free, though usually this buys him at least a bed for the night.
Due to his willingness to help people, he has become an easy target for users and abuses, and has found himself kidnapped by raiders and thugs and forced to work for them in exchange for his life. As a result, he’s become a little hardened, As such he’s grown to believe the NCR is nothing more than a group of organised thugs themselves, and worse yet, the Followers are forced to live a symbiotic life with them in order to survive. Over time he’s grown pretty outspoken in his views against the NCR. He desired a free New Vegas, one that the Followers could use to their advantage and expand their influence to the tribes and cultures of the Mojave, unfortunately, this didn’t happen as the NCR expanded their control, and Jimmy was forced to look elsewhere to expand the Follower’s influence elsewhere.
Jimmy Cartwright was born in one of the slums within Boneyard, home to the NCR. Like most boys, it was pretty expected that they’d escape the slums by signing up for the NCR, and going to war. However, unlike most, Jimmy decided war wasn’t for him. Instead, the boy gravitated towards the Followers of the Apocalypse, who’d always been kind to him. At around ten, he became something of a courier, for the Followers within the university, running messages between the teachers, and sometimes fetching the odd drink here and there. Some days he came away with food, others he came away with five or so caps. It wasn’t decent, but for a kid in the slums it was pretty decent, that is if some asshole didn’t come and take it from you. As he grew older, Jimmy signed up to become a guard for the followers, learning how to shoot, and getting his first owned gun (a 10mm pistol) at the age of 17. He used his wages to get his own place, and then used it to give himself an education.
As he learned, he felt he could do more for the Followers, and as such, got himself enrolled on one of their medical courses which aimed to create doctors for the wasteland. Though Jimmy initially struggled with the more complicated aspects of medicine, particularly in the written part, he excelled at the physical aspects. He could treat wounds effectively, and had a good head for physical conditions such as addiction and disease. After at least six or seven years, Jimmy was skilled enough to serve the followers as a doctor in an official capacity. As such, he joined a volunteer team of doctors in the slums he grew up in.
For a year and a half, Jimmy worked in the slums, helping the addicts cope with their illness, and treating where he could (providing the provisions allowed for it). In his time in the field, he lost count of the amount of addicts he cured, only for them to come back time and time again with new addictions. Sometimes, he would discover his patients dead, but sometimes, on the rare occasion; his patients would get out and go on to have better lives. As such, this made everything worthwhile.
As his time in the slums wound to a close, Jimmy was offered a vacancy in the Old Mormon Fort in the Mojave. Together with a bunch of other Followers, he left for the Mojave, acting as caravan guard along the Long 15. After a long journey to the Mojave, the caravan of Followers eventually ended up in the Old Mormon Fort, where they found their situation to be harsh indeed. With the war in the Mojave between the NCR and Caesar’s Legion, life was harsh on Jimmy. Many times he would be pulled down an alley in Freeside in order to help a thug whose victim had fought back. Sometimes these thugs turned out to be in actual fact, NCR troopers. This incident with the troopers sprouted bitterness within Jimmy, who began to see the NCR as little more than simple thugs. As he spoke to their victims and even some NCR citizens, his ideas began to seem justified. He began to feel outraged at the NCR’s treatment of the locals in the Mojave, and became vocal about it. His words gained him an unpopular reputation with the NCR and their immigrating civilians.
Over time, the NCR showed signs of winning the war against the Legion. Knowing that the situation sucked in either direction it went, particularly with the Followers, Jimmy decided to leave the Mormon Fort and go elsewhere away from the NCR’s reach. He figured he could probably do good things for the Followers away from the NCR, without them leeching off the Follower’s skills.
After many years of searching, Jimmy came across the High Desert Wasteland, where homesteads were independent of the NCR. He figured this was as good a place as any to do some good work for the Followers and help set up a place for them to move into.
