Under the heading Far Future Mongolia with the black market
Enkh eyed up the girl sat in the seat, he turned his face away and breathed out smoke onto the crystallised window of the crowded train door. Then he returned his cigarette to its rightful place and returned his view to the appraisal of the girl. She was a frail young thing, fine and blonde, if he wasn't on a business trip he might have considered making something of it. She shuffled in her seat as he looked down on her as a hunter would contemplate a piece of prise game.
"What do you think?" Erdene murmured at last, breaking the eternal still. Enkh considered this as he took another mouthful of smoke and deposited it against the window.
"Not sure Erd, think she's the girl?" Enkh returned to his brother. The girl looked up at him as if almost pleading, Enkh's cold eyes; however, offered no consolation to her. Erdene shrugged in seeming annoyance.
"God knows" he grunted and Enkh turned away to look out of the window, he followed a trail of water as it made its leaky way from the top to the bottom.
"Do we take her in then?"
"Taker her in, she's a fucking squint" Enkh flinched under the term but didn't comment, one or two of the people on the train turned to the source of the comment but turned away at the sight of the two large men. Simply Enkh stood solemnly as Erdene pressed buttons on his phone, the way Mongolia had been treating the greater Asians since the founding of the empire in 3128 was sick but there wasn't anything Enkh could do. Once again silence was brought down on them again, Enkh ran through the evidence in his mind again. As far as he could tell the suspect couldn't be anyone else. He sighed and stubbed out his cigarette against the window and let it fall into the muck at his feet.
"She's the prime sus, though she has an al."
"I know that, but we don't have much of a choice." Erdene faced Enkh properly for the first time since they had boarded the train. His chiselled granite face like that of a grave stone, his dulled emerald eyes world weary. Clearing his throat he continued "I guess we take her in, even if it's just for her protection."
"Her protection?"
"Yes, the last prime sus we had got assassinated." Enkh was a little taken aback by that, it was the first he had heard of that. This gun running deal had been evading them since the weekend prior but it was more slippery than a frog in water. The train began into its station in Ulan Bator, the noise of the city already slipping into the heads of the passengers.
"Think it was Nergui again?"
"No" Erdene paused and then he said again slightly less confidently "No, I don't" Enkh nodded and leaned over to the girl.
"I'm sorry miss, but you're going to have to come with us" Enkh announced and the girl nodded affirmation in fear. She stood and Enkh placed his hand on her shoulder, he lead her through the door and out onto the station. Like the state of the train the station wasn't much to look at, graffiti coated the walls with anti-governmental slogans and death threats. The ground was littered with trash and vomit, to the left hand side of the station was a homeless man who lay half dead under a blanket. He fit into the scene as much as the passengers who walked past them. Enkh lead the woman off to the side opposite the homeless man and waited patiently for Erdene to catch up, he looked down at the terrified woman and felt a tinge of pity.
"Excuse me" she said in a mouse's squeak
"Yea" Enkh said, looking around the station for Erdene though he couldn't see hide nor hair of his partner.
"Why go so far to help a squint?" the girl asked and Enkh shook his head
"Shit, now even you cal yourselves squints" Enkh felt something wrong, he hadn't noted this many people on the train and Erdene had completely dissapeared "were all human in the end"
"Thank you" the girl managed before she fell backwards to the floor. Enkh wheeled around as the sound of the shot rang out through the station, reverberating off the walls with deafening sound. He peered down at the frail young thing as she hit the floor, blood spraying over the floor behind her from where the bullet had excited the back of her neck. He knelt down on impulse but the girl was already long gone, turning back to the station he saw the bleeding corpse of Erdene as well.
"Nergui" he hissed at the men in masks.
