So this here is a pitch for a thread, testing the waters of interest and also looking for feedback.
It has been five years since the destruction of the second Death Star and the sundering of the Galactic Empire. While hardly dead, the Empire is reeling from the loss of its leader and, most recently, of its ingenious Grand Admiral Thrawn. The Rebellion has settled into The New Republic and has begun establishing its benevolent rule across the galaxy. Of course, all is not perfect, as a great deal of the Imperial Remnant continues to hold on with choking grip to what regions it still controls, and even outside of this several independent groups continue to resist, most notably the Hutts. However, while war is still a presence in the galaxy at large, the worst of it seems to have passed for the average citizen and daily life has begun to normalize, though political turbulence is still a slight issue. As for the Jedi, Luke Skywalker has begun rebuilding the order, but it is a pale reflection of its former self and is barely more than a fledgling organization; however, the few Jedi which exist have become beloved knights and diplomats for the Republic.
However, recently the underworld has begun whisperings, wild things which no normal being would find credulous. Some tales speak of a man twisted and misshapen, his face a patchwork as if created not by nature but by some lunatic scientist, possessed of the strength to sunder warships. Others speak of a elegant masked figure, his every gait one of precise calculation, his voice one of chilling charisma, his every word a perfect maneuver. Others speak of a fleet of ragtag ships, no craft greater than a Clone Wars-era battleship, sweeping into a system, obliterating local defenses, pillaging everything that isn't nailed down, then disappearing without a trace. None know whether these are wild flights of fancy or some looming threat on the horizon, but some have begun referencing this force by that of an ancient Trandoshan warlord, one whose forces were as invisible as a breath on the wind: Iishaan.
Canon notes
Most things preceding Grand Admiral Thrawn's death are fair game as far as canon goes, most things after are not for the sake of giving this thread its own identity. Force abilities will be generally limited to what early Star Wars games portrayed (will go into more detail later), so no Starkillers or anything crazy like that. Also, the Emperor's contingency plans failed; I love Palpatine/Sideous, but I think the galaxy has had enough of him. As for the old main characters, they're around but I'd prefer it if everyone made their own, just for variety. Also, while most races are fair game, we can't have ones that have been thought extinct running around, so no Sith purebloods; though if you want to say someone has a bit of Sith blood in them, that's fine. That ban goes quadruple for the Yuzhong Vong--in short, as far as this thread is concerned a Death Star timewarped itself back to before they were more than amoeba, blew them to kingdom come, then self-destructed. Also, I'm going to ask for no members of the 'Greater Sith Empire' talked about in the Old Republic games; if you want to think they're out there, that's fine, but... I'd rather not open that can of worms. Beyond these things though, all's fair game. I know that sounds restrictive, but if there's something specific you want in, then that can be arranged quite easily.
The Force.
So... as suggested, we don't want Starkiller walking around and crushing Star Destroyers. However, we also want force users to have some fun. So, this is how we're going to handle things. Force users will be separated into tiers of capabilities and archetypes, to keep everything nice and clear.
Force Tiers:
--Not Sensitive: Normal person
--Sensitive: These people can feel the Force, but have no training or knowledgeable capacity. Some of these may be prodigies waiting to happen, others may have attempted to undergo Jedi training but aren't strong enough to manage. Either way, they might feel the Force and might have slightly faster reflexes than normal. See first movie Anakin Skywalker, early Mara Jade, or Han Solo for these examples
--Novice: A starting padawan, this person can do some rudimentary telekinesis with the Force and some telepathy, but it's really rudimentary. Biggest improvement is in reflexes, but even then it's marginal. See original movie Luke Skywalker for an example.
--Padawan: Your basic Force user. These individuals are competent in the Force, but far from mastered. They have better telekinesis than novices and can throw small objects around, not so much as weapons but as distractions and can receive Force visions more readily. Their reflexes are greatly heightened and they can do a little bit of Force-assisted jumping, though it's a marginal increase. A few begin learning basic alternative abilities, such as protection and healing, but it's not useful at this point in time. Most untrained Force users fall into this example, as well as newly started Jedi. Empire Strikes back Luke is an example.
--Knight: These are the average Jedi, reasonably powerful, but not quite one-man armies. These individuals can used small objects as weapons and push fair-sized objects out of the way, not to mention are quite in tune with the Force. Their reflexes, strength, and jumping ability are all quite well-heightened and a few of the better trained ones can increase their physical speed a bit. Non-Force sensitives would be wise to approach these individuals with extreme caution, but they can be felled by well-calculated movements and numerical superiority. At this point alternative Force techniques are starting to blossom, and so some can utilize unusual abilities such as the lovely Mind Trick. Last movie Luke, earlier game Kyle Katarn, and Revenge of the Sith Obi-Wan and Anakin are good examples of this.
--Master: These are the Force users to fear in combat, as they are the ones who know the Force intimately and while they may be reluctant to fight they can be quite fearsome when riled. These individuals can lift quite large objects and throw around some pretty large ones. They have incredible reflexes (when in shape) and are quite strong and fast, capable of jumping incredible distances. Their alternative Force techniques are usually the most potent and endurance-intensive, the most famous of which is their ability to block lightsabers and blaster bolts with their hands and Force Lightning, though these are quite varied, especially between individuals. If you want an example of this, look at Yoda or Palpatine/Sideous.
Archetypes: (These go for both Jedi and Sith, it's just capabilities)
--Guardian: These are the brawlers of your Force users, they focus on physical prowess and reflexes above most things. To them, mastery of the Force is to feel it course through your body and to have it extend to your every movement. They are especially adept at lightsaber techniques and alternative techniques which augment their combat prowess, but they are generally not impressive compared to their counterparts when it comes to the more visible Force abilities..
--Consular: These individuals find the Force to be its own delight, they focus on the many mysteries of the Force and use its many aspects to use, though usually with great reverence. When roused to battle, these people will usually only use their lightsabers for self defense, preferring to pummel their opponents with assorted Force abilities. These individuals are the most varied in their capabilities with the Force, but also are not particularly adept with lightsabers.
--Sentinels: These individuals walk the middle ground between the other two, both finding value in the spiritual and physical delights of the Force, and as such can be the most unpredictable of Jedi and Sith. Their capabilities vary wildly, but in general Knight-level sentinels are incapable of beating a Guardian in a saber fight or beating a consular in a Force ability square-off; they must utilize their abilities as appropriate. Their complimentary abilities are wildly varied.
--Sages: These are non-combatants, and usually not particularly strong in the Force. Most of these people act as support to actual combatants, serving as healers, spiritual advisors, and scholars for the order. Most of these people are Padawan level in ability, though a few knights appear. Any master-capability sage is a master who is growing too old and feeble for combat and has essentially retired (in other words, none exist at the moment).
Light vs Dark: In short, the advantages of the dark side are ones of short-sightedness and aggression. A dark-sided Force user can deal out a lot of damage very quickly, but in exchange skimp on protective techniques and are therefore somewhat akin to glass cannons. Light-sided Force users are usually quite good at defending themselves and can be difficult to knock down, but usually don't have much in the way of offensive abilities, beyond the usual Force abilities anyways.
Support abilites: Basically, look at the list of abilities in Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, and you'll get a good idea.
Light sided abilities: Mind Trick, Healing, Energy Protection, Force Protection
Dark sided abilities: Lightning, Choke, Force Rage, Force and Life Drain
